A Newer Sacred Name Scriptures.

I was curious enough to order The Cepher from the publisher.
One of my favorite activities is comparing versions of Scripture and I found this version to be unique in a number of ways.
I'll list some pros and cons from my personal perspective. I'm not an expert by any means so take it with a "grain of salt."

Cons: There really aren't many. But here are a few-
I personally prefer a heavily-footnoted study Bible. That comes in handy when there are differences between say the Masoretic Text and Septuagint.
The Cepher is not that kind of Scriptures. Not a major issue.
This version includes the Hebrew Gloss of I Samuel 6:19 and the Erasmus Addition of I John 5:7. I suspect that they started with the King James Version originally. It also uses the older English of the KJV, I much prefer modern English.

Now for the pros:
The first 22 pages are helpful. You will need the Table Of Contents to navigate the order of the books. This isn't uncommon as a lot of versions have re-arranged the order of books. The Preface has a lot of very interesting information in a small number of pages. Being a footnote junkie I really appreciate what the editor provides in the Preface. There is also a list of Hebrew Names, Paleo-Hebrew Aleph-Beyt and a Hebrew To English Table in those first 22 pages.

Two features that makes this version unique are the use of the sacred names throughout this entire version of Scriptures and it also includes the books of Jasher, Jubilees, and Enoch. Although I do have those three books on my bookshelf I appreciate having them at my fingertips with The Cepher.

There are little subtle changes in words that actually shed more light on some passages for me. One is Revelation 4:4 where The Cepher has "seven menorahs of fire" rather than "seven flaming lamps."

I understand why the order of Books was re-arranged. For instance the books of John are grouped together as well as the Pauline letters and the Hebrew letters(Peter, James, Jude). I find that convenient.

Another positive aspect of The Cepher is that it is available from the publisher a little bit cheaper and the website has a lot of information on this version of Scripture.
As far as cosmetics go, this leather looks great and the binding is high quality. That's a good thing because this is a heavy book.
I like using The Cepher for comparing Scripture passages, particularly from a Hebrew perspective.
The publisher also has an Android app with a Hebrew Lexicon available.

An insightful guide to the mental game of baseball, performance, and life...

In the Jim Bouton baseball classic "Ball Four", Mr. Bouton said something like: "After ten years in this game, I'm just now starting to realize that ninety percent of baseball is psychological". While no book may be able to prove that Jim's statement is true, this book will at the very least show you the importance of understanding the mental game within the dusty diamond. While much of the explorations take place on the mound, the lessons found in this excellent book are also applicable to all of baseball and, perhaps even more importantly, to life in general. I highly recommend this book for musicians and writers as well. As a musician and writer myself, I was able to apply many of the topics discussed in this book to my creative work and performances. It is well written and succinct on the subjects it discusses; not a lot of filler here. It's like reading a conversation with that life mentor you always wanted, but a mentor who is a bit pressed for time, so they cut out the lengthy anecdotes and fluff and get down to nitty-gritty of what they really want to teach you. A baseball book with few equals, and a stunning glance into the mind of a strategic and competitive genius, after reading this alphabetized guide of baseball knowledge you'll feel much more prepared when you step up to the plate, whether that's at home, at work, or at play. And who knows, with the help of H.A. Dorfman you might even throw a perfect game or knock one right out of the park. And at least this time you might have a better understanding of why and how you did it when you watch the ball fly over the fence and take a victory lap around the bases. Buy it. This is the no-hitter of books.

Must Have for All Pitchers

I have played baseball for about 17-18 years of my life (am 24). I have played college at NCAA Division II level and this was like a textbook for me. You don't have to read it like a normal book, just pick a chapter that interests you (or you need work on) and get to reading.

I picked the chapters that I felt I needed the most work on and found out ideas as to how to solve the issues I am having, or at least know how to minimize their impact on my game.

This should be on shelves of any pitchers that plan to play beyond HS.

If you like reality tv and/or CW tv shows, Firsts is right up your alley

Firsts is a standalone upper young adult novel by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn. Firsts was a lot edgier of a story than I was initially expecting. The main character made me cringe more than once. I mean she is kind of a train wreck, but not once- not even at any one point- did I not enjoy myself with Firsts. I really, really liked this book. I know it won't be for everyone, but there is just something about Mercedes that got to me. Even when she wasn't a good friend...at all...I still couldn't give up on her. And I am so glad that I didn't. Even Mercedes deserves a happy ending and I loved the way Laurie Elizabeth Flynn wrapped everything up. Firsts was a fun and, strangely enough, satisfying read.

Once I started reading Firsts, I didn't really know what to expect. It is about this super smart girls (she has her sights set on MIT) who is quiet and unassuming. And heck, she even does "good deeds" for her fellow classmates. Of course, her good deeds are letting the boyfriends of the school practice their first time on her, so they can make it super special for their girlfriend. Didn't see that one coming, right? She had the weirdest logic behind her side gig. She really, honestly thought she was helping these guys and their girlfriend. I know, I told you she was a train wreck. But don't go thinking I am bashing her- I told you I really like her. In the strangest, weird way, her journey was something that I just didn't want to stop reading.

She has some great friends, both old and new, and Zach is such a great guy. More than anything I wanted Mercedes to grow as a person- for him. Because he deserves that. I can't stand cheating, and I don't condone what Mercedes was doing, but if you put that aside, Firsts has some really great writing and character development. I just couldn't seem to tear my eyes off the page.

Bottom line: Firsts will be great for fans of upper level, edgy YA with messed up characters, on their own messed up journeys. If you like reality tv and/or CW tv shows, Firsts is right up your alley. Grab a bowl of popcorn and let yourself enjoy it!

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

-The Good: This is an interesting concept - a girl who wants to “help” a guy with his first time and sleep with them first, so their girlfriends get the guy with the experience, not the awkward fumblings that are the hallmark of many a person’s first time. It’s got a passing similiarity to Easy A, if Olive actually had sex with the guys, instead of just faking it. Oh and without the cool and quirky family.

On the surface, Mercedes comes from money, she’s perceived to be a religious girl, quiet and the one most likely to be a nun. But it’s the examination of Mercedes’ obliviousness, her judgment of others, even while she’s having sex with guys in relationships with other girls, that was most interesting. Unfortunately, it’s just sad to read because she’s so oblivious. Faye and Zach are the best things in this book. Their support and love for Mercedes, when she’s so clearly screwed up, kept me reading even if I wanted to stop.

-The Bad: It’s Easy A without the funny, which I could deal with. However, the story is bogged down by clich�s. The neglectful, trampy mother, a father who abandoned her, the doormat hero who she ignores in pursuit of her “helping” others and controlling sex. It’s pretty typical slut shaming fare. The shock when things inevitably fall apart. Considering her cynicism about every other aspect in her life, this was something that was hard for me to buy. The big “distraction” to divert attention from Mercedes? That was about the only thing that wasn’t completely predictable, and yet it was a big stretch for me to believe it.

This felt more about Mercedes’ redemption through suffering doled out by those judging her, and judging herself and less about empowerment. The one person of color is one of many villains, but I shouldn’t be surprised because there’s alot of horrible characters in this story.

The Bottom Line
It was ok, just not for me.

I don't really know where to start with this review. Firsts by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn wasn't at all like I thought it was going to be and unfortunately this book did not work for me. There were too many things that I had issues with, and I just don't even really know exactly what to think. First, this book while it is stated to be young adult and is about that age group is not one that I would actually let anyone from that age group read. Second, the only reason I even finished this book was because it was like a bad train wreck that you can't look away from and I just had to see how it would all end. I will try to be as vague as possible, but beware there might be spoilers below as some things that bothered me need a bit more explanation.

Seventeen-year-old Mercedes has an open door policy for virgins looking to get their first time out of the way. As long as they promise to give their girlfriends the best first time possible (the kind she didn't have), she views it as doing them and their girlfriends a favor. With her mother never around, her best friend having no idea what she does in her spare time, and her friend with benefits none the wiser, Mercedes has kept her secret through many guys. But when her best friend's boyfriend threatens to ruin everything if she doesn't hook up with him, Mercedes knows her secret is about to be found out. When everything is exposed, will she be able to salvage her friendships and her reputation?

I could not stand Mercedes. Not only was she clueless, but she was completely delusional. She thought that by having sex with these guys that their girlfriends would be grateful for it. (of course that was on the assumption that they would never find out...yeah right) She really felt like she was doing all parties involved a service and that she was happy to hook-up with them as long as they "paid it forward", and what started out as only five virgins quickly turned into the teens. All of this for a seventeen-year-old. I am not a prude by any means, but since when is it okay for a seventeen-year-old to sleep around that much and her mother to joke about her one night stands? It was pretty disgusting and I felt like the whole thing was excused because her mom was hardly around, her dad up and left when she was a kid, and she had a bad incident at a young age. Seriously I had no compassion for Mercedes at all, and I found her beyond ridiculous. Her friend with benefits (although for most of the story she refused to even call him her friend) wanted more with her and went above and beyond, and I honestly felt so sorry for him! Zach deserved so much better and I really wanted him to just leave her like she deserved.

There was a situation with her best friend's boyfriend that I felt was left completely unresolved, and the fact that nothing seemed to happen was so unrealistic to me. I couldn't believe that nothing happened, considering the fact that it was widely known and several people (including adults/teachers) were aware of it and she was underage. How there weren't child pornography charges involved or the police I still don't understand. There were issues with rape and dubious consent. All of this for high school aged kids and nothing really happened. Mercedes and her friends took matters into their own hands and that was the only way that any of it was dealt with. It was just completely unbelievable and honestly I felt like the whole book was just an excuse for this girl to have sex with as many guys as possible and in the end it was just glossed over as if that is normal or okay. It was completely inappropriate, there was a ton of cheating as all the guys had girlfriends, and the one guy that was actually likable in the whole book ended up being treated horrible and still wound up with her in the end though he deserved far better. Firsts is Laurie Elizabeth Flynn's first book, and I honestly doubt that I will be reading anything from her in the future. This book should not be marketed to youth in my opinion, and I think it glorifies promiscuity and perpetuates so many things that are wrong with kids today. Kids have become so desensitized to sex these days, and it is books and movies like this that show them that there are little to no consequences for their actions and that it is alright to act like this and sleep with as many people as possible.

A Fascinating Introduction to Dutch Architectural History and Dutch Cultural Heritage

This is a wonderful, almost impossible to put down, trek through Dutch architectural history and Dutch cultural heritage from the late Middle Ages to the present. While much of the book is devoted to historic buildings in major cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the book does a fine job pointing out many of the most historically important buildings in other notable Dutch cities and towns like Utrecht, Gouda, and Delft. These buildings are those that have been chosen by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to be depicted as Delft Blue miniature houses to those flying in Business Class since the 1950s, and a tradition that doesn't seem to be dying out yet. I have to praise Mark Zegeling for writing a compelling look at both Dutch architecture and history, written in a lively, often engaging, prose style. This is one little book worthy of many a reader's attention.

Monica L. Baskin, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Associate Scientist in the UAB Center for Health Promotion and the UAB Clinical Nutrition Research Center. She obtained a B.S. in Psychology and Sociology from Emory University and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University. Her primary research interests involve behavioral interventions for the prevention and treatment of obesity, sickle cell disease, and minority health and health disparities. Two principles stand out as priceless to me. First, the 'sticky proverb' works great because it is like the sticky notes everyone uses to remind them of important things. The proverb acts like a sticky note for the mind, & it will get to the heart.

Second, Teaching more by teaching less. Being 76 years old, & having been saved since age 13; I have heard mostly informational teaching, & it doesn't do much for me. I always have to step back from it & find one point that I can remember that I need. That is my reaction, & my education includes a Bachelor of Theology.

I shared those two principles with my pastor, & to my surprise, he employed them in his next teaching session. Comments I heard were: "The best he has ever taught; that was a fantastic lesson; he really gave me something I can hang on to."

Unlike that of many of its more affluent neighbours, Yemeni architecture has not yet been seriously influenced by the development of modern materials and technology. For the most part the Yemeni master builders have kept alive the building methods and styles practised for many centuries, while adapting them to the current requirements of modern living. This ongoing proof of the practical value of traditional techniques and the aesthetic quality of design possible using indigenous materials and simple tools is clearly and beautifully demonstrated by this book. The traditional building methods used are initially dictated by the availability of local materials: stone, limestone used for waterproofing, shale and - most notably - mud formed into oven-baked or sun-dried bricks. With these materials the builders can construct skyscrapers of mud brick, minarets over a hundred feet/30 metres high, and palaces of outstanding elegance, all of which are set against the extraordinary landscapes of southern Yemen. But most significant of all are the outstanding skills of the master builders, passed down from generation to generation over many centuries, and still being practised with consummate virtuosity, asthese photographs show. Material for this book has been drawn from the author's firsthand experience and knowledge of the country and from her copious records, made during a number of visits over the last ten years. These records represent probably the most comprehensive body of knowledge on southern Yemeni architecture compiled to date.

About the Author
SALMA SAMAR DAMLUJI is an architect and specialist in Islamic and vernacular architecture of Arab countries. After studying at both the Architectural Association School of Architecture and the Royal College of Art, London, Dr Damluji also taught at the Royal College of Art as both a Research Fellow and then a Tutor, and later at the Architectural Association School of Architecture.
