Outstanding

A very good book on the Scandinavian Qa5.

Pros:

1.The author is an active 2600+ player.
2.The author play the opening.
3.Standard examples are reevaluated.
4.The format combines variation with evaluation in prose.
5.The author cited and comment on previous books (as well as authors) on the Scandinavian (Whals,Prie,Muller). So you can decide if you want to keep your old sources or elminated from your library.
6.Clear and honest evaluations of every line.

Lets elaborate:

From the introduction you have the 101 reasons to play the opening.

The opening is Forcing so you have to study less opening theory than with the Sicilian Najdorf. After 1.e4 d5 best reply is exd5 and in the main line you will be playing a restrain e6-c6 Vs d4 structure.

A like the straight to the point approach in the book.For example, when evaluating: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.d4. in page 240. Previous books on this opening cited DeFirmian - Granda 1996. then they evaluate 3..e5 as better for Black.Bauer analyzed that game and pointed out 7.c3 as a weak move that allowed Granda a fantastic initiative. Instead White should play 7.Nf3 0-0-0 when after 8.Bd2 Black has compensation but he/she is NOT WINNING " Black obviously has enough for a mere pawn, but I have not found any advantage for him".
Well now is clear why a got 4 draws in this line when playing similar opponents...I played those games thinking I have an extra "something" when in reality the game was =.

Please do not panic, Bauer suggests 3..Nc6 as a way to keep the position complex and with more real chances to win the game. 3.e5 simplify the position too much to outplay players at the same level than me.

This book is a real pleasure to read ,it has a clear (very easy to follow) structure.

If you are a seasoned B01 player this book is a must.

Players taking the opening for the first time will also benefit from the book. Just go over the games and read the comments. My suggestions is that the book should be read backwards (sidelines first) since bellow master level this is what you face 8 out of 10 times in OTB play.

Top Class Scandinavian

This book is by a very strong player who has been willing to take up the Scandinavian as black at the highest levels of chess. For that reason alone, it would be foolish to ignore this book. It is a highly complete and up to date book (2010) which easily replaces the Wahls (1997) book which was only published in German.

Certain obscurities have been left out, for example the Anderssen Counter Attack is not covered. But the Mises gambit is covered, as are delayed attempts by white to play b4. Unlike Wahls (1997) who completely dismisses the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, Bauer (2010) simply says that though it is unsound technically, it can be dangerous OTB. I should mention that 2...Nf6 (the so-called Portugese) is not covered at all. However, last time I consulted Fritz about this 2...Nf6 did not look like black's best try in the Scandinavian anyway.

Personally I am more interested in this book for various game plans for white against the Scandinavian than for black. Although the book is technically written for black, there are lots of interesting ideas for white.

The book takes the main lines of the Scandinavian quite deep as one might expect from such a strong player. However, there are lots of early deviations for both sides provided, and with first rate analysis.

One of three essential books for the serious Scandinavian

The three essential books on the Scandinavian are the scandinavian by Emms, The Modern Scandinavian by Wahls, Muller, and Langrock and this book.
They all get 5 stars for various reasons. This book is the most up to date in recent theory. About 300 pages packed through with theory. Very easy to read.
For the serious Scandinvian player--might be a little hard for classes C and D.

Here is another book that has its origin in the impeachment of President Clinton. Yet Robert Coles, a noted psychiatrist, bestselling author (The Moral Intelligence of Children), and Pulitzer Prize winner (Children of Crisis), does not deliver a polemicized account of those days. Instead, he tries to describe moral exemplars--something he thinks his country desperately requires: We need heroes, people who can inspire us, help shape us morally, spur us on to purposeful action--and from time to time we are called on to be those heroes, leaders for others, either in a small, day-to-day way, or on the world's larger stage. At this time in America, and in the rest of the world, we seem to need moral leadership especially, but the need for moral inspiration is ever present. Coles writes about Robert F. Kennedy (whom he knew personally), Shakespeare's Henry V (who had an influence on RFK, reports Coles), the literature of Conrad and Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Dorothy Day--even Al Jones, a black bus driver in Boston during that city's school desegregation controversy. The book's bottom-line message is an encouraging one: moral leaders are important, and they may be present in places where we don't normally go looking for them. "Moral leadership as we study it in history and politics (from the distance of time and events we never get to see or learn about in any detail) is also moral leadership that can happen right in front of us or not far away," notes Coles, quoting the psychoanalyst Erik Erikson. In a collection that ranges from vague to incisive, Coles (Children of Crisis; The Moral Intelligence of Children; etc.) presents true stories and reflections about moral leaders and what distinguishes them as such. Drawing heavily on recorded interviews, the Pulitzer Prize-winning psychiatrist and Harvard ethics professor profiles moral leaders he has known. Uniting all of his subjects is "moral courage"Atheir ability to know who they are and what they believe in, and to take action they believe is right and necessary to instruct and influence others (Coles quotes Erik Erikson, who said, "There's leadership in action"). Some are famous for their moral heroismARobert Kennedy, Dorothy Day and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Others are not well known, such as Albert Jones, a janitor who volunteered to drive a bus taking African-American children to previously all-white Boston schools. Coles also examines the moral content of writers, including William Shakespeare and Joseph Conrad, and illustrates how his teacher, Perry Miller, helped him "make connections" between books and life. Finally, he examines how indiscretions or bad decisions by people deemed moral leaders, like President Clinton, affect their ability to lead or for others to continue to view them as leaders. The book is marred by woolly writing and overanalysis of minutiae (e.g., the phrase "hit home" is dissected to mean "take up residence in the contemplative sector of our thinking life"), and Coles never fully explains how moral leadership differs from leadership plain and simple. But he excels at oral history, at getting people of action to reflect for the record, and he successfully honors his subjects (most of whom are left of center, a counterbalance to the recent right-wing dominance of the public discussion of morality) and offers the reader much to reflect on. Moral Leaders Beget Moral Leaders, and Beget a Moral World

The book clearly deserves more than 5 stars.
Dr. Coles is helping us see "circles of human moral connectedness growing, touching, informing the lives of individuals and of the communities to which we belong."
This is the most insightful book on moral leadership that I have read. That success builds on giving you an inside-out examination of how moral leaders developed their perspectives, how their words and deeds affected others, and how moral progress ensued. Professor Coles was able to do this by heavily drawing on people and situations he knew personally, so that you get many lovely nuances of how moral leadership has worked in his life through civil rights and humanitarian examples.
The book opens with a lengthy anecdote about how Robert Kennedy (when he was a Senator) worked with a group of Doctors, including the author, to develop the food stamp program. The physicians would have been satisfied with venting their moral outrage at hunger in America and going home. Kennedy helped them understand that they could accomplish much more by matching their indignation to the practical matters of influencing others. The author often thought that Kennedy was not being sincere as these lessons were being given, but later came to realize that Kennedy had given them all and the nation a great gift of moral leadership.
Unlike most books about leadership, this one talks about ordinary people as well. Those examples speak louder to us, if you are like me, because they describe situations where we are likely to find ourselves, and can draw practical inspiration. I was especially interested in how the Tomasellos encouraged Mr. Thomas (a black man) to go after the vote in the South, Elaine Vogel's efforts to develop her white students' moral sensibilities during the school integration years in New Orleans, and Al Jones' example in encouraging busing in Boston (both by speech, becoming a bus driver, and using the bus rides to provide moral lessons for the embattled black students).
Many anecdotal books seem to have no point, but Dr. Coles has created one here that gives you the rich detail necessary to make the points for yourself. The lessons you learn from your self-examination will stay with you more than if he continually made all of the points for you. This is a greater gift of moral leadership than a traditional book attempts.
Clearly, moral leadership has many roots, and each is examined in detail through the cases here. The most important ones seem to be in literature (such as Conrad's heroes), the examples of great moral leaders (such as Gandhi), and the supportive reactions we get to efforts at moral leadership (as when someone tells us we should go ahead). We can each stimulate much more moral leadership by reading literature about moral leadership, sharing what we learn with others and encouraging them to read the same literature, reading about the lives of moral leaders and sharing those lessons and encouraging similar reading, encouraging the moral observations and actions of others, and by being a good example in taking moral stands and actions. I came away with a sense that the amount of moral leadership could be greatly expanded if each person simply absorbed and acted on the major lessons of this book.
If you are moved by this book, I suggest that you develop your moral consciousness by looking for places every day where you can share what you learned with younger people. In that way, you can have the most influence for the longest time, and help create a magnificent legacy for your own life.

Great Book. Tiresome Sentences

I agree with the Washington Post Book World assessment that Robert Coles should be declared a "national treasure." For years his writing have shown him to be a man of compassion with a heart for the oppressed and downtrodden as well as for the children who are often so easily overlooked in our society.
Coles new book "Lives of Moral Leadership" is also a national treasure. I think it is important not only for the insights it provides concerning moral leadership but also because of its behind the scenes glimpse of historic events that shaped the American character in the latter part of the 20th century.
In the book, Coles displays the tensions inherent in moral leadership including the tensions of inherent moral force and political pragmatism, the leader as hero and also as one who must garner the consent of his/her followers, wisdom and innocence, and "standing apart" in order to give courage to others.
The book is a collection of narratives and reflections. Much of the material is drawn from Coles interviews with such people as Robert Kennedy, Dorothy Day, and Danilo Dolci. The reader is asked to do a good bit of reflecting based upon the stories Coles tells.
My only complaint about the book has to do with Coles style of writing. While his style is clear in most instances, he has a tendency to launch into never ending sentences. Me thinks he sometimes feels "he will be heard for his much speaking." Every so often you will want to say, "Robert, a period costs no more than a semi-colon, dash, colon and parentheses."
The chapter on Dorothy Day is worth the price of the book and is a wonderful of example of someone who tried to stay faithful to the leading of God as well as to the wisdom of community.
Great book. Tiresome sentences at times.

A book that every ... member would find silly...

I enjoyed a lot the reading of that book. Dr. Coles is a man who really dedicated himself for the well being of children and society in general. His examples are powerful and instructive. But reviews like the one of John S. Bradburn inspires me pitty. I looked at Mr. Bradburn's interest, and found out that Charlton Heston seems to be his favorite "philosopher", and war his theme of predilection. Fortunately, USA has citizens like Robert Coles and the individuals he described in his book, and it is because such people that Leonard Cohen is right when he sings that "Democracy is coming to the USA"...

Preparation for the journey began in San Francisco on August 17, 1969, when Stoen let anger over systemic racism become a ruling passion. It happened as he left Black Panther headquarters to drive away in his Porsche. He became a social-justice radical, adopting Equality as his ideology.

The actual journey began in Redwood Valley, California, on January 1, 1970, when Stoen self-recruited into a utopian movement called Peoples Temple to pursue, based on human will alone, a Biblical ethic: "And all that believed...had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need." The movement's leader was James Warren Jones.

The journey took a dramatic turn on November 18, 1977, when Stoen testified in court and went to war against Jones for custody of Stoen's son, John Victor. Both Jones and the child were then in Jonestown, Guyana--a tropical rainforest in South America where Jones had forged a community of 1,000 US citizens.

During that one-year war for John Victor, Stoen made two trips to the then “wired” country of Guyana, and in California he braced, every time the doorbell rang, for a pistol or shotgun blast to the chest. He had no doubt he was "marked" for extinction. Stoen believes the only reason he was not killed is that he had become so aggressive and conspicuous in fighting for the child that Jones feared Stoen's death would, as an international "incident," cause the US to pressure the Guyana government to invade his Jonestown fortress.

Stoen also had no illusions at what was ultimately at stake. On October 3, 1978, he filed a declaration in California Superior Court against Jim Jones stating: "I believe he is willing to murder all 1,100 people under his dictatorial control in Jonestown, Guyana."

That prediction came terrifyingly true on November 18, 1978, when Jim Jones, in the name of "love," became an Orwellian devil and went for the kill. Within hours he killed 907 of his people by cyanide. Within a matter of minutes, he orchestrated the deaths, by gunfire, of five other innocents, including United States Congressman Leo Joseph Ryan--an act by Jim Jones of FBI-defined international terrorism. Among those Jones killed by the poison was six-year-old John Victor Stoen.

"The CIA would have had to acknowledge," says Stanford psychology professor Philip Zimbardo, "that Jones succeeded where their MK-Ultra program failed in the ultimate control of the human mind."

Structurally, this book traces the “development” of Jim Jones, as Stoen experienced it from 1967 through 1978, through thirteen stages. It narrates encounters having significance for Stoen at the time.

On November 18, 1978, the day he died, Jim Jones exhorted vengeance: "Somebody--can they talk to--and I've talked to San Francisco--see that Stoen does not get by with this infamy--with this infamy. He has done the thing he wanted to do: have us destroyed."

At death, Jones also prophesied a curse: "We will win. We win when we go down. Tim Stoen has nobody else to hate. He has nobody else to hate. Then he'll destroy himself. I'm speaking here not as, uh, the administrator. I'm speaking as a prophet today."

It's about time!

I've waited and waited for Tim Stoen to write a memoir regarding his experience with Jim Jones and the People's Temple. Being born in Santa Rosa ca and having property in Mendocino county and graduating high school in 1971 I was well aware of the People's Temple prior to the Jonestown massacre. Tim Stoen in his unique capacity as Jim Jones personal lawyer and high level member of PT has knowledge and insight that has never been disclosed. I personally appreciate the background provided and in depth details disclosed in this book. It's apparent that Tim Stoen had incite into Jim Jones actions and thoughts that few others had.
I have always found the PT and its members fascinating as well as why individuals are drawn into and remain in a cult . What I find interesting is the evolution of a Christian church with a charismatic pastor to a full on socialist dictatorship.
I have read every memoir written by former members of PT and also accounts of the Jonestown tragedy. This book is riveting. Right up there with Raven by Tim Reiterman and Seductive Poison by Deborah Layton.

It's just ok

This book dragged horribly in spots. Tim just gives you to much background. I felt like he got a bit preachy in spots. I was very excited to read his side of the story. I just didn't learn anything new. I don't think we need so much history dating back to the 1800's . Sorry Mr. Stolen I tried to like it

CCNP Lab manual review.....

They are awesome to do if you have the equipment. If not, just reading the commands is good too but to really get the knowledge, one needs to use his/her fingers to get the brain cells going. These cover way more than what is on the test and that is a good thing. Thee labs provide some great review if you have or had a handle on the concepts but if this is the first time you have gone through the course, do them again and again. You won't regret it. The reason for the 4 stars is that the equipment may be a bit hard to acquire as 3560 v2's are still kind of expensive. If you can use CML or VIRL from Cisco, then go for it as those are really good tools to use. I was able to use real 3750's on top of CML and scored a 958 on the exam. Good stuff. Most can be done using only 2 switches to get a grip on the syntax and output for what is asked for on the exam but 3 is ideal. Couple this lab book with Chris Bryant and his 300-115 course and the test becomes a formality.

Understanding Emotions is a Valuable Life Skill, and often not a skill which is taught in school...Perhaps it should be? If we understand some of the reasons why we react the way we do, then perhaps we would not be so hard on ourselves and those around us experiencing similar emotions, thus improving, rather than damging our confidence...and that's got to be a good thing. This book is a valuable resource in this respect.

The final section describes the current use of CAD systems in clinical practice as well as how CAD will play an important role in quantitative image biomarkers and imaging genomics research.

This book brings together existing and emerging CAD approaches at a level understandable to students, CAD system developers, basic scientists, and physician scientists. About the Author

Qiang Li is a professor at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute and an adjunct associate professor at Duke University. Dr. Li holds six patents on CAD-related technologies and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal papers on CAD and medical imaging applications.

Robert M. Nishikawa is a professor and director of the Clinical Translational Medical Physics Laboratory in the Department of Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh. A fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the Society of Breast Imaging, Dr. Nishikawa holds seven patents on CAD-related technologies, has won 24 awards, and has published more than 200 articles on breast imaging.
