About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory. When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines. After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Since their inception, the Berenstain Bears stories have expanded to include picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books--even a hit TV show on PBS. Writing and illustrating the books has become a Berenstain family affair. Mike joined with his parents as a creative team in the late 1980s. The Bear family has expanded over the years as well. Sister Bear arrived in 1974, and baby Honey joined the family in 2000.

Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Berenstain Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania.

Ride with author John Hall into the turbulent world of 1960s bike club culture, from his beginnings at an upstart motorcycle club to his rise to the Long Island chapter president of the Pagans, a club that the FBI called “the most violent criminal organization in America.” Follow him into the Pagan heartland of Pennsylvania where he fell in love, got in a roadhouse brawl over a honky-tonk angel, and eventually went to jail for “takin’ care a club business.” Now after a career as a journalist and college professor, he returns to the violent days of his youth and smashes up stereotypes like he once smashed up bars, resurrecting long-dead brothers in a style reminiscent of Jack Kerouac and Mark Twain. Hall presents them as they really were: hard living, hard loving, hard drinking, hard fighting rebels, but also hardworking, patriotic, loyal, and lovable characters. Outlaws, yes, but outlaws as American as apple pie.

Review
RoadRUNNER Magazine

“If you've ever dreamed of being an outlaw, you might think each chapter of Riding on the Edge is a badass bedtime story for adults. But if anecdotes of beer drinking and womanizing don't appeal to your inner rebel, then the thought-provoking reflections of author John Hall might interest you. A college professor and political columnist, Hall's "first life" was spent riding a Triumph in the 1960s with the outlaw club, the Pagans. Ever wondered why bikers get a bad name? Riding on the Edge breaks down the stereotypes and newspaper headlines to reveal the raw moments in time which spawned them. And there is no shortage of historical references or interesting facts in this book. However, John Hall's writing is so down-to-earth it seems as if you're listening to a favorite uncle spin a tale. And with characters like Satan, Big Dutch, & Sleepy weaving in and out of the storyline, you may never want that tale to end.”

Motorcycle.com Review by Dustin Woods (5.28.09)

"Few people are able to retrospectively recount the life of an outlaw biker with such accuracy and candor as John Hall, mostly because few people so deeply entrenched within such a culture ever make it out alive. If rival gangs, bar brawls or bike accidents don’t kill them, years of hard drinking and hard living usually do. Hall is an exception to these rules as he successfully transcended this great divide. Proving that sometimes our justice system actually works and men can be rehabilitated, Hall turned his life around from being the leader of an outlaw motorcycle gang the FBI called “the most violent criminal organization in America” and being incarcerated to becoming an acclaimed journalist and college professor.

Hall demonstrates eloquence and intellect, traditionally unheard of with first person recounts of biker culture. Documenting historical sociological connections to the beliefs and brotherhood of medieval Vikings, Hall paints a sometimes entertaining, occasionally chilling picture of men who live beyond the boundaries of our society yet will do anything to uphold the sacred values and tradition of their heritage. While other biker clubs were merely cruising for chicks and looking for kicks, Hall explains how the Pagans became one of the most feared and respected clubs in the country. Men who lack the fear of pain, death or any consequences whatsoever create a truly unruly and terrifying opponent. The often vulgar yet intuitive book definitively explains where biker culture stems from within our society and more specifically the individual, offering incredible insight into the hearts and minds of men who were vicious and violent, while at the same time adamant at preserving the structure and sanctity of their brotherhood, at all costs. Not merely anarchy for the sake of it, Hall effectively describes this truly fascinating dichotomy.

While often glorifying a lifestyle that shocked and terrified the dreams and towns of law-abiding citizens, Hall also portrays the grim reality of the consequences that befall the men who live outside the laws of society. Whether you are interested in the sociology of such sub cultures or just want to read a firsthand account of life within an outlaw biker club, Riding on the Edge will surely quench this thirst like a cold beer at a biker rally."

Steppin' Out Magazine

“Unlike a ranting hoodlum who might say whatever he feels like saying or exaggerate details, this author did his homework with regard to facts, figures and dates. This is truly a smart, solid and just plain damn good read! If you would like to tak ea look back through the window of time to the late 60’s biker scene at its most intense level, you should pick up a copy of Mr. Hall’s book.”

From the Back Cover

In the 1960s, John Hall, a Harley-riding hell-raiser, hooked up with the Pagans, a group of like-minded individuals who went on to become the largest outlaw motorcycle club on the East Coast. Hall and the Pagans rode roughshod across the Eastern Seaboard throughout the 1960s, until John and six other Pagans ended up in the Pennsylvania State Penitentiary. While in prison John began taking college classes and earned several degrees. Now after a career as a journalist and college professor, he returns to the violent days of his youth and smashes up stereotypes like he once smashed up bars, resurrecting long-dead brothers in a writing style that is part Raymond Carver and part Jack Kerouac. Hall presents the Pagans as they really were: hard-living, hard-loving, hard-drinking, hard-fighting rebels, but also hardworking patriots, loyal, lovable characters, a band of brothers whose outlandish behavior forged an all-American outlaw legend in the tradition of Jesse James, Doc Holliday, John Dillinger, and Pretty Boy Floyd.Riding on the Edge: A Motorcycle Outlaw’s Tale tells the story of John and the Pagans as they rode hard through the tumultuous decade of the 1960s, doing their damnedest to die young and leave good-looking corpses.Bikernet.com “This is a good story about a lifestyle and chapter in American history that we will never see again. Back when America was a free country and you were innocent until proven guilty, before political correctness and before the patriot act. Read this and remember or imagine what it must have been like to be so free!”Motorcycle.comFew people are able to retrospectively recount the life of an outlaw biker with such accuracy and candor as John Hall, mostly because few people so deeply entrenched within such a culture ever make it out alive. If rival gangs, bar brawls or bike accidents don’t kill them, years of hard drinking and hard living usually do. Superb Effort
By Gregory A. Walker
"Riding on the Edge" is, IMHO, the finest work of 1%er biker literature on the stands today. Written by an Old School biker and original member of the Pagans MC, this is a thoughtful, respectful and captivating story of what it was like to be a 1960s motorcycle outlaw.

Written by John Hall, today a professional journalist and academic, Hall's book eclipses Sonny Barger's very successful effort (Hell's Angel) and, when compared, makes a mockery of Ruben "Doc" Cavazo's recent book about himself (oh, and the Mongols MC, too).

"Riding" is a wonderful read with the best outlaw biker book cover on the stands to date. Well worth the purchase.

A Unique Work
By David Burr
This is certainly the most well-written book by an ex-insider that was close to or at the top of one of the major 1% clubs. John Hall is a literate guy who seems to borrow some of his style from Hunter S. Thompson among others. Unlike some of the drivel that is being pumped out by some real and imagined ex-outlaws, Hall's work is superbly readable.

The only knock I have on it, and it's a Catch-22 endured by all authors in Hall's position, is that he really isn't in a position to tell us what we want to hear about some of the more "outlaw" aspects of his life with the club. He isn't going to implicate himself or others. Doc Cavazos' book about the Mongols has the same issue - there are stories to tell, but what can he do without harming his brothers? In this vein, I would say that Sonny Barger's book "Hells Angel" comes the closest to getting at the "meat." But Sonny has a huge advantage because of the ability to allude to untold published articles, stories, books, truths, untruths, etc. about the Hells Angels. There is so much out there for Sonny to address that he doesn't run the risk of exposing anything new. John Hall doesn't have that luxury.

In addition, Hall, like Cavazos, exhibits very little ego in this writing. This makes for what seems to be pretty honest, if a bit bland, account of the life as a club leader.

Also, I would have to say that the knock Hall tosses in at the end about people like Yves Lavigne and Anthony Tait is a bit clumsy, because it is out of place. But he is dead on.

This is your book if you want to experience real writing while getting an excellent account of the development of the Pagans as a club, and maybe a little history of the people and culture of eastern Pennsylvania thrown in as a bonus!

Fact and Fiction
By Ronnie H.
In 2006 John Hall's literary agent James Fitzgerald of New York contacted us about the book. At that time Fitzgerald was informed that John Hall in fact did not have authorization to write, print or publish any thing about the Pagan's MC. John Hall has never contacted the club at all to seek authorization. The book is interesting to read for the most part, however it is by no means a acurate and true account of the 1 1/2 years that John Hall was a member of the club. Not only is it an exageration of his own status and position within the club, but also certain alleged events written of in the book are totally fictional and never happened. For the most part he dropped names of men that are dead now, however others are still alive and atest to the false nature of this personal account of John Hall. John Hall was nothing more than a spoke in a wheel. John Hall is not a original member of the club and does not have the respect or honor that position would grant.

Three dead Enforcers in three weeks, their bodies butchered. Muse has seen it before, and when she reads the metal memories in the murder weapon, she sees it all again. Her owner, Damien, is back, and he wants what is rightfully his.

Muse escaped him and the netherworld, once before. This time, she's stronger, smarter. This time she knows she has the fires of hell at her fingertips, but so does Damien, and he's not the only one. Akil is weak. No longer a Prince, he needs Muse's limitless power to regain his title. How fortuitous then, that Akil's fate is tied to the one man she cares the most for.

As Muse, Stefan, and Akil battle their own demons, not all will come away victorious. Some choices can never be forgiven. Some lies are never forgotten. Some wounds will never heal.

sequel ups the game
By Amazon Customer
I liked the first book in the series, but the sequel? LIGHTYEARS better in terms of worldbuilding, gripping angst, and character development. Within the first ten pages, the author sets the whole tone for her book, a gritty, atmospheric style that infuses scenes with simmering tension and keeps the pages turning at a blistering pace. Muse and Stefan face a bit of a harrowing role-reversal as she seeks to rescue him, at great personal cost, from hell. But of course no good deed goes unpunished, and I can already tell that this book is going to stick with me a bit while I untangle the massive clusterf*** our heroes find themselves mired in at the end. The only thing threatening to knock a star off my rating was the ineptitude of the Institute, who seem implausibly feared given that they didn't demonstrate even basic operational security at any given moment in this book. I wanted to sit Adam down and force him to read a Tom Clancy novel or two.

Institute as a weak bogeyman aside, there's nothing quite so satisfying as a REAL series done right, complete with multi-book plot arcs, cliffhanger endings, and the same MCs throughout. DaCosta is putting our MCs through the wringer, but the next book promises to put Muse on par with Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson, and other giants of the PNR/UF universe. Congratulations to DaCosta on avoiding the dreaded Second Book Syndrome.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

couldn't put it down
By Amazon Customer
No sophomore slump for this second in the series - this was quite the page turner! The author was able to keep me on my toes with the plot itself, and all the back & forth on who's truly got Muse's best interest in mind. Never a dull moment, and world-building was again quite well done. Eagerly looking for the third volume!

Spellbinding Urban Fantasy at its Best!
By Moonrise Book Blog
I knew from the first book that there was more to learn about Akil, the Prince of Greed and a most powerful demon from the netherworld. In this second installment, Akil's true colors shine! We learn about the complex relationship between Akil and Muse, and get a peek into the history that brought Muse from her tortured life in the netherworld and into the City of Boston, where she did her best to bring forth her human side to live a normal life. Of course, all that has changed, and in this book we travel to the netherworld, where chaos is a way of life for those who inhabit the land, and for those who--for whatever reason--happen to find themselves on the wrong side of the veil.

Son of a powerful ice demon, Stefan is a half-demon who has worked as an enforcer for the Institute, fighting to rid the streets of Boston of rogue demons. Now trapped in the netherworld, Stefan's true demon form has taken over... and the longer he stays, the more his human side is slipping away. Although Muse has been plotting his rescue for six months, time in the netherworld runs on a different clock, and for Stefan, years have passed... years he's had to ponder his losses, and to develop a grudge against all those responsible for his entrapment. When Muse finally catches a glimpse of his true form she knows he may be too far gone. But there is still one way to set him free. And it involves Akil. Putting her trust in the Prince of Greed is risky business--Akil's agenda is always multifaceted. Still, Muse knows Akil may have one weakness... and it involves her own demon.

This is a well written, fast paced, and original tale that kept me hooked to the end! The vivid descriptives involved in the world building brought the netherworld to life in all its fearsome glory! But it was not without beauty, and there were plenty of touching moments. Even in the brutal netherworld there is a human-like side, and times when you have to rely on others. Muse confronts her past demons (literally), and must overcome issues of trust, if she is to survive. A lot is at stake, but as she discovers more about herself she finds her strength... and all hell is about to break loose! A fantastic second installment to The Veil Series! I can't wait for the next book!

From Booklist
In 1978, when the first edition of The Truman Years was published, it was the fourth volume in the Facts On File Presidential Profiles series. Twenty-seven years later it has been revised with up-to-date information on the people covered in the original volume.

There are more than 400 biographies of politically significant individuals from the Truman presidency. Included are people who worked in his administration, prominent congressional representatives and senators, Supreme Court justices, and state and local people who were influential on a national level. Also included are civil rights, business, and union leaders as well as journalists. An introductory essay gives a good overview of Truman's years as president.

Each entry lists birth and death (if applicable) years and the individual's title and discusses the person's career (particularly during 1945-1952) and major accomplishments. Significant revisions have been made in most of the biographies. A notable addition is an entry for Elizabeth Virginia Wallace Truman, Harry Truman's wife. Other individuals included are Dean G. Acheson, Thomas E. Dewey, W. Averell Harriman, George C. Marshall, Dean Rusk, and Margaret Chase Smith.

See references point the reader to other series volumes in which a person may have an entry. A chronology lists such events as the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the establishment of the Central Intelligence Group (forerunner of the CIA), and the explosion of the first hydrogen bomb. Principal U.S. government officials are listed, including Supreme Court justices and key people in the executive department and regulatory commissions and independent agencies. Other appendixes list members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and governors. Sixteen primary documents were selected for inclusion, among them the Potsdam Declaration (July 26, 1945), the Truman Doctrine (March 12, 1947), and the Marshall Plan (June 5, 1947). The volume also includes a selected bibliography and an index.

Aimed at grades 9 and up, this is a well-written volume and useful tool for academic and public libraries. kaye talley

To Wed His Christmas Lady (The Heart of a Duke Book 7), by Christi Caldwell

She’s longing to be loved:
Lady Cara Falcot has only served one purpose to her loathsome father—to increase his power through a marriage to the future Duke of Billingsley. As such, she's built protective walls about her heart, and presents an icy facade to the world around her. Journeying home from her finishing school for the Christmas holidays, Cara's carriage is stranded during a winter storm. She’s forced to tarry at a ramshackle inn, where she immediately antagonizes another patron—William.

He's avoiding his duty in favor of one last adventure:
William Hargrove, the Marquess of Grafton has wanted only one thing in life—to avoid the future match his parents would have him make to a cold, duke’s daughter. He’s returning home from a blissful eight years of traveling the world to see to his responsibilities. But when a winter storm interrupts his trip and lands him at a falling-down inn, he’s forced to share company with a commanding Lady Cara who initially reminds him exactly of the woman he so desperately wants to avoid.

A Christmas snowstorm ushers in the spirit of the season:
At the holiday time, these two people who despise each other due to first perceptions are offered renewed beginnings and fresh starts. As this gruff stranger breaks down the walls she’s built about herself, Cara has to determine whether she can truly open her heart to trusting that any man is capable of good and that she herself is capable of love. And William has to set aside all previous thoughts he’s carried of the polished ladies like Cara, to be the man to show her that love.

*** Please note, this is an approximately 48,000 word novella.

Sweet story to pull on your heart strings
By amtmcm
Christi Caldwell has written yet another charming story! It's easy to see why all of her books average 4-5 star ratings on Amazon when she consistently publishes high quality material that touches her readers' hearts. This book opens with William, heir to the Duke of Billingsley, on his way home after eight years of traveling through Europe and North America. While he's riding his horse, he's reminiscing about childhood memories that, while providing images of a happy family, also portray his reluctance to return and fullfill his obligation to marry his mother's god-daughter. As the winter storm worsens, he seeks shelter at a small inn.

When Lady Cara is introduced, she's watching from the window of her boarding school as carriages arrive to pick up her classmates for Christmas break. We're immediately pulled into her heart-wrenching feelings as her cold, heartless father has forgotten her and no one comes to get her for the holidays. She feels like the most unloved person alive. The headmistress demands Lady Nora give her a ride home, so Cara finds herself in the carriage of the Earl of Derby. And of course, the carriage gets stuck in the snow and she seeks shelter in the same inn as William.

I've read similar storylines before, but it's one that I like and Caldwell adds the extra element of Cara's character development from cold and selfish to embracing her desire to be happy, joyful and even kind. Her father has instructed her all her life to ignore anyone "beneath" her, especially servants, and it's obvious this is a role she plays and isn't part of her nature. Her memories of her father's strictures and cold neglect are heartbreaking. But William calls her out on her selfish behavior and she strives to prove him wrong. He brings out the best in her and she realizes she doesn't want to live the cold, formal existence her father has planned for her as the wife of a future duke. Does she dare to grasp the happiness William offers?

I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story and read it in one sitting. There are a few minor details I had to just go with the story and suspend any disbelief, but it's worth it to allow the beauty of Cara's transformation to flow from the pages and cheer for her to embrace her softer, joyful side. William is the perfect hero: tall, strong, kind, funny and handsome. Of course she falls in love with him in a matter of days! The book is about 135 pages, so as a novella it may feel a bit rushed. But sometimes my short attention span craves more immediate gratification and I'm in the mood for a novella rather than a 300 page book. This sweet little story is totally satisfying.

* Clean romance with several passionate kisses.

Not sweet at all, left me with a bitter taste
By THE C LADY
I bought this novella following the great reviews it had. I should have read the reviews more carefully. I despised the heroine from the start. Oh poor dear, the girl is hated but again she is so awful that who would blame anybody for hating her. Of course, some of the reasons behind her behaviour are explained. Bur it would take at least a book (and not just a novella) filled with hardships to redeem her in my eyes. For those who don't remember her, Cara is Lady Larisse that horrible half sister of Jane one of the heroines in a previous book of the author. She is the one that had her sister sacked as if it was not bad enough that she was illegitimate.
The hero felt just too flat. Yes this is a novella but I've read novellas with interesting characters.
Maybe I was expeting better because it is Christi Caldwell. I loved for love of a duke and to love a lord. Not all her books are great but those too were particularly good. Unfortunately, her novellas have not been good at all lately.
I do seriously feel cheated. 0.99 dollars is still too expensive for wasting my time.

Clean Historical
By Deb D
To Wed His Christmas Lady by Christi Caldwell is a wonderful read. Will and Cara's story is entertaining. Ms Caldwell has delivered a well written book with characters that may not start off as lovable but by the end of the book you love them anyway. Along with the great characters, this book has drama and a bit of humor. To Wed His Christmas Lady is fairly short, perfect for those with limited time for reading. It is also a clean read, no sex scenes. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Christi Caldwell in the future. To Wed His Christmas Lady is book 7 in The Heart Of A Duke Series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food, by Roy Choi, Tien Nguyen, Natasha Phan

Los Angeles: A patchwork megalopolis defined by its unlikely cultural collisions; the city that raised and shaped Roy Choi, the boundary-breaking chef who decided to leave behind fine dining to feed the city he loved—and, with the creation of the Korean taco, reinvented street food along the way.

Abounding with both the food and the stories that gave rise to Choi's inspired cooking, L.A. Son takes us through the neighborhoods and streets most tourists never see, from the hidden casinos where gamblers slurp fragrant bowls of pho to Downtown's Jewelry District, where a ten-year-old Choi wolfed down Jewish deli classics between diamond deliveries; from the kitchen of his parents' Korean restaurant and his mother's pungent kimchi to the boulevards of East L.A. and the best taquerias in the country, to, at last, the curbside view from one of his emblematic Kogi taco trucks, where people from all walks of life line up for a revolutionary meal.

Filled with over 85 inspired recipes that meld the overlapping traditions and flavors of L.A.—including Korean fried chicken, tempura potato pancakes, homemade chorizo, and Kimchi and Pork Belly Stuffed Pupusas—L.A. Son embodies the sense of invention, resourcefulness, and hybrid attitude of the city from which it takes its name, as it tells the transporting, unlikely story of how a Korean American kid went from lowriding in the streets of L.A. to becoming an acclaimed chef.

Review
Street-wise, honest in its admission of trials and punctuated with vernacular swagger, Choi’s debut pays tribute to family and his enduring fascination with the melting pot of Los Angeles. (Kirkus Reviews)

“While [Jacques] Pepin’s autobiography was the epitome of the traditional chef’s life, it may be that Choi’s will be the same for the new generation … “L.A. Son,” co-written with Tien Nguyen and Natasha Phan, pops with Choi’s hip-hop verbal rhythms.” (Los Angeles Times)

‘With driving metaphors coming fast and furious throughout this memoir cum cookbook, there is no doubting and no pulling away from Choi’s gritty embrace of L.A.’s mean streets.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Choi is the rare chef whose life story--which includes working with chef Eric Ripert and a weeklong cocaine binge--is as compelling as his food.” (Food & Wine)

“At the moment, Roy Choi is one of the most prominent lenses the nation has into L.A.” (Los Angeles Times)

His beautiful book .... is two parts story (Choi’s coming up), one part recipe (his OMG crazy good creations, like ketchup fried rice). You may never cook from this book (though the recipes are eminently doable), but it won’t matter. It’s a fun flip even if all you do is drool.” (Associated Press)

“A a memoir-cookbook that moves like a novel.” (New York Times, cover of 'Dining' Section, in article about Roy's new restaurant)

“In its pages, and even more so in person, one finds in Choi a personality who is at once high-end and low-end, flawed and at the top of his game, relentless and chill, coarse and refined-and absolutely, unapologetically authentic.” (Ad Week)

About the Author
Chef Roy Choi showed talent as a teenager, attended the Culinary Institute of America, and made his name in restaurants. But it was selling Korean tacos out of a food truck in 2009 that put him on the food map. In a 2013 talk at Ren Redzepi's MAD Symposium, he challenged chefs to not just "cook for rich people" and to find ways that they could feed more than just the privileged.

Buy for Biography, Not for Recipes
By A. Weitz
I'm lucky that I live in LA and can eat at a Roy Choi spot at least twice a month. My favorite is Chego but A-Frame and Sunny Spot are also great. (I gave up on trying to find the Kogi trucks and honestly, I lost patience with having to wait on those long food truck lines.) But my point is: I love Roy Choi's food. The Sour Cream Hen House is probably among my top 5 things to eat in all of LA.

That's part of why I was disappointed with this book. I was hoping for some recipes that resembled some of the amazing dishes I've tried at Choi's restaurants -- the pickles and dressing at A-Frame, the meatballs at Chego, the wings at Sunny Spot, and so on. Instead, the book contains recipes like Roy Choi's version of Scott Conant's spaghetti and tomato sauce (there's also a separate recipe for spaghetti with chili sauce.) I appreciate how he intersperses recipes while telling his life story but that's why I think this book works better as a biography first and the recipes as a bonus. The recipes are in the book for nostalgia and sentimental value -- not because they're unique or groundbreaking. This is the bummer.

The other thing is, I've had this book for a couple of weeks and I've tried several of the recipes with varying results. One of the things I like about Roy Choi, besides how his food tastes, is his philosophy and his "keeping it real" roots. I'm glad the cookbook is riddled with f-bombs and real, raw emotion. It makes for a fascinating read. My only problem is with the recipes. They're written as if Roy Choi was standing next to you, telling you how to do it, which is cool. Except -- I always seem to have a question about the recipe. It almost seems like nobody tested or proofread the recipes. A perfect example of this is how the $4 Spaghetti recipe differs in the Food & Wine recipe version from the book version. It's really different -- from cooking times to the amount of olive oil to use and so on. The Food & Wine version is more succinct and easier to do. But it also answers questions like, "What the hell do I do with the mushrooms now?" The book never tells you that you're making a mushroom stock and should discard them. This is a common thread through the book. (And the truth is, the $4 pasta isn't so great after the 4 hours of cooking that goes into it.)

So, my main knock is that there don't seem to be any real, signature Roy Choi dishes here from any of his restaurants -- and instead you get recipes for a lot of humdrum dishes that don't really have that Roy Choi flavor he's known for (e.g., there's a recipe for baked sliced potatoes with butter -- this is where his nostalgia overtakes reader expectations.) My other knock is that the recipes are not really easy to follow -- or they presume a lot of the reader. I'm not a chef -- I'm just a fan of Roy who likes to cook.

That said, Roy's personal story is inspiring and he seems like a cool, genuine person. He's had a huge impact on cuisine in LA and beyond and for that alone, this book is worth reading. But don't buy it expecting the magician to reveal any of his well-known tricks.

Overhyped.
By FoolsGold
This part autobiography, part cookbook is a bit over hyped. The man, the myth (ok maybe not myth) Mr. Roy Choi, not to be confused with all the other Roy Choi's you might know. I had high expectations for this book and felt compelled to give it at least four stars, but yet I'm giving it 3 stars. I love some of his food (Kogi), repulsed by some of his food (Chego), and have a similar but much less exciting background as him (minority growing up in a mostly white LA suburb having somewhat of an identity crisis). The hardcover book itself is printed on some high quality thick paper and I do admire the artistic creative photos contained through out the book. His autobiography can be slow and a snoozer at times, but does a good job explaining why his cooking today is the way it is. My problem with the book are the recipes. Some recipes are hits, most are mediocre and are not worth spending half a day in the kitchen. Some recipes are down right insulting: Roasted Sweet Potatoes (potatoes, salt, roasted at 350...can we say "filler material"?) I'm probably one of the few customers who bought the book, who has tried to actually make some of the recipes. Here's some tidbits and my take on the recipes:

- You will need access to a Latino supermarket and a Korean and/or Thai supermarket to make most of the recipes. This should come as no surprise given Choi's background and influences. If you don't have easy access to these markets, I wouldn't waste your time. Ordering ingredients online won't cut it.
- Be prepared to burn a lot of time in the kitchen literally (see below)
- You need a blender/food processor to make a lot of these marinades and sauces along with knives, pots, pans etc.
- If you are diabetic/overweight/health conscious do not attempt at home.
Recipes I've tried:
"$4 Spaghetti that tastes almost as good as $24 spaghetti" - Should be titled "$4 spaghetti that taste just like $4 spaghetti". Complete waste of time. I get the lesson Choi is trying to teach. You make a mushroom stock and garlic confit to liven up a cheap lowly can of Hunt's tomatoes. But it takes 5 hours to make this (oh yes I did!) and it doesn't taste any better than heating up a a $1.79 jar of Trader Joe's marinara sauce.
Kalbi Plate - This was delicious but no different from every other Korean person's Kalbi recipe.
Pork Fried Rice - Well s***, I marinaded the pork belly and over baked it to the T except the book didn't mention that the pork belly needs to be in one big slab, not cut up in thick slices like you buy at the Korean market. Hello petrified wood pork belly!
Carne Asada - One of the better recipes I've tried in the book. Good to put in my wannabe Kogi quesadilla (see below).
Salsa Verde - Not like addictive green stuff found in the plastic buckets in front of your local taco truck. This one is a bit more creamy and more citrusy. Next time I'd only put in a quarter of an avocado, not a half and maybe a little less cilantro.
Perfect Instant Ramen - Sadly and ironically the best recipe I've tried in the book so far. Melted American cheese and butter mimic the milky broth in Hakata tonkatsu broth. I add a couple of sheets of nori in mine for an extra oomph of umami.

Although the recipes I've tried so far in the book have been very lackluster, using my own ingenuity and ripping-off skills, I managed to make a wannabe version of a Kogi bbq dish. Try this and get back to me:

"Kogi Burrito, But Not Really" - Carne Asada recipe from the book (or go buy the 1/2 off quick sale bulgogi at the Galleria market after 8pm), shredded jack cheese, shredded mild cheddar cheese, caramelized kimchi (fry it in butter), scrambled egg, caramelized onions (optional), cilantro (optional) sesame seeds, sesame seed oil. Dump all that in a 12 inch heated tortilla experimenting with different ratios of ingredients to your liking. Can also make it into a quesadilla. If you actually made the Salsa Verde in the book, drench your burrito/quesadilla in it. F-ing delicious.

Who'd ever thought the best recipe I learned wasn't even in the book?

Great read
By chefandm32
I am a native Angelino and Chef displaced in New England. that said Roy made my heart flutter with his thoughts, realities and experiences that only happen in L.A.. This is more of a memoir than a cook book . A good read but the recipes might be tough if you havent eaten much street food. I read it all in one day and was surprised that there was such a small nod to his classical training, I have eaten his food. He is very talented no question. These recipes are the tacos, dirty dogs and messed up hybrids of food that many of us grew up on , and that is awesome! I would kill for some Korean BBQ off of Olympic Blvd but in Ma that aint happenin. Roy can guide you to some good Korean soul food and a good feel for the food of L.A..I would recommend this to L.A. expats as you will smile every 3 minutes of reading. As well as those who want to experience that small but important region of the country. FYI if you are offended by expletives especially the F word this is not for you. No matter where you are find a moment of sun make a pork belly taco and smile cause your doin it Cali style.
