With more than twenty-five years of correspondence between "two old scribblers," world-renowned writer Rainer Maria Rilke and his sounding-board, one-time lover, friend and mentor Lou Andreas-Salome, Snow and Winkler have gathered an intimate portrait of an important literary relationship. Unfortunately, a falling-out in 1901 led Andreas-Salome to demand Rilke burn all the letters she had sent to him, which he obliged, making it difficult, in the beginning, to understand the nuance of their romance. As a poet courting an older, married woman, Rilke's early letters are fervid and eager, full of overblown romantic revelations: "all the roses in the world bloom for you and by means of you ... and only through an act of royal condescension do you maintain the pretense that they aren't really yours and allow Spring to keep them." Later, when Andreas-Salome's voice chimes in, the pair settle into a more introspective exchange, one frequently troubled by the insecure poet's vascillation between elation and despondency. When Rilke first met Salom� in 1897, he was twenty-one, an aspiring poet, and she was a married woman of thirty-six who had published a multitude of books and essays on philosophical and literary subjects.Their correspondence was initially one-sided—Rilke, besotted, sent a torrent of mail, while Salom� wished she could make him "go completely away" - but the two developed a passionate partnership as friends, lovers, confidants, and counsellors. This collection of some two hundred letters, written over nearly three decades, enriches our picture of Rilke and Salom� with curious details: Rilke makes arrangements for Salom�'s beloved dog, in advance of a visit; Salom�, practicing in mid-life as a psychoanalyst, claims success treating patients with Rilke's poems: "They heard your tone as that of Life."

Beauty and the Bitumen

There is no reviewing correspondence. There is present either only the (inevitably) voyueristic pleasure of gazing into dead mens dreams, or nothing at all, at which point we set the book down, and carry on composing our own secrets.
But the idea of positing a critical eye on one's letters (unless they are means exclusive of a recepient, as with Seneca) seems to me to be entirely ridiculous.
I can only say that I was happy to the point of giddiness to discover the recently published letters between Rilke and Andreas-Salome.
I devoured the book whole, and found myself inspired by Rilke's early uncertanties, and the almost frighteningly composed replies of his one time lover, now become mentor. It offered a glimpse into the world of this beautiful poet, who previously, seemed to have sprung fully formed into the author of the Duino Elegies, as though he were always the master we have come to admire.
And here, beset by dread, here overcome by an almost childish enthusiasm, we find him not stripped of his title rather enriched by his likeness to ourselves. And it's as though we always sensed beneath the richness of his language a kinship we could never adaquetely define, here at last the inexplicable is made manifest.
I do not speak to Andreas-Salome, she does not move me, but she was a freind of Rilke's and therefore deserves at least our respect.
If you are curious about the genesis and flowering of a poet, you will find no better testament than this collection, and much like the Memoirs of Pablo Neruda, you will find in the simplest relation, a poetry unto itself.

Simply amazing.

Being that this was one of my impulse purchases, I was surprised when I found myself still awake at 4am pouring over the pages, unable to put it down. Rilke invites the reader (Lou Salome) into his innermost thoughts and psyche in such a visceral and eloquent way. You begin to often see yourself in his words and it sends your mind racing. This alone would be enough. But having it countered by Lou's (often paradigm-shifting) deep understanding and almost clinical input - it makes for one of the most intellectual and enlightened dialogues of the 20th century.

This book can feed your soul, if you let it.

The writing of this book was started years ago when UHCI and OHCI were just surfacing. Then in recent years when xHCI surfaced, I once again took interest in USB and spent the time needed to finish this book.

I very much enjoyed this project and continue to work with and show interest in the USB concept and hardware, as in recently releasing the 2nd edition in late 2014 with updates, corrections, and addition information.

I have had numerous responses, mostly good (smile), and I totally support my work. If you have questions before or after your purchase, please feel free to contact me. About the Author
Benjamin David Lunt has been programming computers since 1984 and has always enjoyed the hardware side of the spectrum. He has programmed many different types of programs, mostly for DOS and other minimal operating systems, as well as a few programs for the Windows family.

About 13 years ago, he started to read up on the Universal Host Controller Interface (UHCI) and got hooked on the USB concept. He has been programming for USB ever since. One of the more known projects has been the USB support for the Bochs Emulator.

Programming is not Ben's only line of work. He has been in the building trade since 1991, and enjoys remodeling homes.

He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and is an active member of his local Boy Scout troop.

Make your own choices.. PERFECT !

Today I got this book in the mail and I was in shock. OK.. I'll explain. the first book of his 8 volume series I ever had in my hands was his Input and Output devices book. Thin little book, but a whopper of info. So I thought, OK all his books are this size. But man was I wrong. I got his his USB book Volume 8 in today and its 5 TIMES THE SIZE !! I LOVE IT !!! I looked through this, page by page, chapter by chapter. Not only does he explain how things work, but his charts and diagrams put it all into perspective. Really trying to teach how the USB works. I have read others. No charts, no graphics, no tables. And they really didn't help you understand. But David's book is spot on. And on top of this, the CD source code for the book, he will send you upon request. I LOVE IT !!

Some of the main topics of the book are as follows :

Chapter 2. The PC Hardware
Chapter 3. UHCI Hardware
Chapter 4. UHCI Stack
Chapter 5. OHCI Hardware
Chapter 6. OHCI Stack
Chapter 7. EHCI Hardware

And those first 10 chapters is just part 1. There are 3 other Parts to this book, that cover those areas in more detail. Step by step he shows you how to talk to your USB thumb drive, or USB Hard Drive. Devices I didn't even think about that I would eventually want to talk to, such as my USB Mouse. Which any hobbiest knows, if you reboot your computer into your own OS and you don't have a USB driver for your mouse, it won't work. So THANK YOU DAVID for this wonderful book With this book, you can make your own choices as to how to talk to the USB hardware, and not rely on Linux or Windows or any other OS.... PERFECT !

Recommended for the Basics from scratch

I bought and read the kindle edition of this book. It initially explains the PCI interface for usb host and continues with the 4 distinct usb controllers. It actually explains every aspect that you should know to write the usb driver from scratch without any os dependencies. Actually, If you write usb device driver of Windows or Linux etc. You should refer to the specific information regarding usb driver heirarchy which your target OS provides. But this book tells the basics of the USB driver from scratch. Must read for the reader who eagar to learn basics of USB device driver fundamentals.

A book that makes USB easier

This book really does what it promises ("communticate with the USB, with no Operating System to get in the way").
First it introduces you to how to detect the controllers (UHCI, OHCI, EHCI, xHCI) on the PCI bus, then it describes the stacks.
It continues with device enumeration, how to use HID devices, Mass Storage Devices, not to mention the other things.
The CD-image need to be requested from the author which I got in less than a day from him.
This book will definitely speed up the OS development.
I am an experienced assembly and C programmer, though. As the book states in the Introduction, some knowledge of C and assembly is necessary ("You may also need to have a fair knowledge of C and Intel x86 assembly to use and understand the source code.").

About the Author

Michael Nowicki, EdD, FACHE, FHFMA, is a professor of health administration and director of the School of Health Administration at Texas State University, where he has won numerous awards for his teaching, research, and service. He has also taught for universities in California, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and New Jersey and for several healthcare-related associations. Before his academic appointments, Nowicki held various administrative positions in healthcare organizations around the country.

Translation of the novelization for the French serial

Once again, Black Coat Press presents a translation for one of the novelizations for a character they have been using in their Tales of the Shadowmen series. This time is "Belphegor" the so-called "Phantom of the Louvre". As far as I know, the movie serial this is based is not available on DVD.

They've used this mysterious character before, and now we can read the original story. The author was trying to create a character that could rival Fantomas or Judex (the later of which he co-created).

This would also spawn a later tv series (the cover is taken from that series) and a more recent movie version as well, tho these made changes in the characters. The extras in this book include synopsis of that 1965 tv remake, along with the comic book sequel that followed, as well as reprints of some of the covers to the book versions that have come out over the years.

"Belphegor" is the name of an ancient demon (not a god). The main villain of the story, the "Phantom of the Louvre" (also called Belphegor), is searching for a hidden treasure of the kings of France that is connected to the statue of Belphegor located in the Louvre. Opposing him are 2 characters. One is Chantecoq, originally created by Bernede as a French secret agent, now turned detective (he's called the "king of detectives") who appeared in other stories by the author before and after this work. The other is the journalist Bellegarde, who seems to be based on the classic French journalist/adventurer Rouletabille (Black Coat Press has reprinted 2 of his classic stories).

Other characters include the daughter of Chantecoq (who didn't appear in the other works of this character), Bellegarde's fiance Simone Desroches, Police Inspector M�nardier, the Baron Papillon (his chateau is used in the climax of the story) & his wife, and a sinister hunchback. Adding to the plot, we have a love triangle between Bellegarde, Simone, and Chantecoq's daughter, all of whom Belphegor menaces. Both Chantecoq and Menardier are trying to unmask Belphegor as rivals.

The original story was serialized, then published in 4 volumes, later collected into a single volume and reprinted several times. Interesting, between the original serialization and being collected, several passages (and in one case a whole chapter) were dropped. They have been restored in this edition as footnotes.
