"They made it possible for me to retain my sanity in an insane world," wrote one pilot about the letters his wife sent him throughout World War II. The letters contained in this collection explain the soldier's sentiments. Whether full of passionate longing for a missing sweetheart or merely detailing domestic gossip, the letters offer a rich introduction to how American women experienced the war. Since military authorities ordered soldiers not to keep any letters written them by their loved ones, the authors have done a magnificent service in obtaining letters that soldiers either surreptitiously hid or whose authors copied them before sending them on. The "G.I." generation seems to be growing aware of its mortality, and two couple's collections have appeared recently (Robert and James Eastons's Love and War, LJ 4/15/91; and Charles and Barbara Woodall's Miss You, LJ 4/1/590). Because of its inclusiveness and sensitivity, however, most libraries will want to buy this.

AWESOME - EMOTIONAL - REVEALING - INFORMATIONAL - THE BEST

This book of letters is so revealing of that period in time.
It lays the emotions of the women left behind during war time right out in the open for all to feel and experience. This book has become a part of my life. I work at a college and when we have a program that needs a reading done I am always called on to read from "my" book of WWII letters from home. I feel like these letters are my children and each one is crying out to be heard and I really do hate to have to pick only a couple to read. This book is that good. I feel that this book should be read by everybody especially young people. I get very good response after my readings and some very emotional responses as well. This is a truly wonderful book and I recommend it to everyone.

An Enthralling Collection

I'm very interested in the powerful tapestry of the US homefront during WWII. This book provides a wide variety of first hand accounts of what was happening and more importantly how people felt about these events. The power comes from the fact that the words were written at the time rather than as later rememberances tainted by subsequent experiences. The only selectivity is in the letters people chose to save. But I think the authors have done a good job in trying to mitigate this natural bias by drawing from a wide variety of sources.

A marvelous glimpse at "the home front" during WWII

Compiling 400 letters, Litoff and Smith give readers a very personal look at what World War II was life for American women at home. Reading them is an almost vouyeristic experience, as these women share their thoughts, struggles, personal victories and tragedies.

The book is divided topcially rather than chronologically, giving the reader an opportunity to focus in on one aspect of the war. For example, "I Took a War Job" focuses exclusively on the liberating and empowering experience women felt in working in the defense industry (and making a man's wages.) The most touching and strongest chapter, "The Price of Victory" dealt with the loss of a loved one - husbands, brothers, lovers. The letters are from all social classes, races and parts of the country, providing a representative view, and speaking to the commonality of experiences. It is a remarkable resource, a fantastic read, and a rich collection of primary documents. For the professioal historian, I highly recommend it. For the lay reader, it is as insightful as it is fascinating. Recommended.

Good Introduction To Astrology

I don't know much about astrology but to me this book seems to provide a good introduction to the basic concepts.

The Edgar Cayce material provides some unique contributions to astrology with Cayce's idea of the planetary sojourns which people experience between incarnations. For Cayce astrology and reincarnation are closely related.

Nelson was able to compare Cayce's astrological influences with his real past life experiences. I suspect it is very rare that those two sources of information are both available for someone in that level of detail.

Cayce said astrologers should be using the sidereal Zodiac but most use the tropical Zodiac. The book uses the tropical Zodiac which I felt wasn't that great if he is trying to explain Cayce's interpretation of astrology.

Nelson agrees with Edgar Cayce that some people may not be affected by the effects of astrological influences on their lives. They can override those influences with their own free will and the choices they make. So this makes me wonder how useful astrology really is for individuals.

I'm interested in astrology more in relation to mythology, ancient monuments like the pyramids, and world affairs. The book gets into some of that where it says Edgar Cayce became the Egyptian's sun god Ra because he had been on the Sun before being reincarnated as the Atlantean priest Ra Ta.

Ancient cultures believed that the constellations of the Zodiac are living entities.

They also believed that the stars in the constellations influenced how the Earth was formed all of those unimaginable eons ago.

Astrology is supported in the bible. Ezekiel's vision of the four living creatures corresponds to the four fixed signs of the Zodiac. Those strange Zodiac creatures appear again in the Book Of Revelation and they are the ones who told John about the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Nelson says some things which seem a little far out to me. He says based on astrology the FBI should have waited another month before trying to end the siege of the Branch Davidians at Waco, Texas.

It was too light weight in content and was really all about Cayce's philosophy on reincarnation rather than information about astrology. Basically it was a disappointment.

Of Sun and Moon

First I want to say the cover is gorgeous!
I found this book on Amazon and though I would give it try. It sounds different and original. The premise of the book is pretty interesting and it did keep me turning the pages. I think the idea was great. The myth behind the tooth fairies that the world hears is far from the truth. The so called tooth fairies in this book are not at all interested in the teeth as much as they are in saving the world, so to speak.

The book was easy to get in to and the characters were interesting. The main characters were well described and pretty well built. The secondary characters fell flat at times, but not enough to take away from the story. The relationship between the two main characters felt real and honest to me, which I really love in my stories.

I did have a hard time following the story at times. The writing was good but did not flow as well as it could in parts of the book. I felt confused at the beginning; it took me a while to really understand what was happening. When I first started reading the book it was hard to see where the story was heading and that was a little frustrating. The truth behind Keira came quick and rushed. The story of Keira was really hard to follow for me at first. After a few more chapters I began to finally grasp Keira but still failed to see how the missing kids were connected. In the end it did come together and I was able to say to myself "ah now I get it" and figured the confusion must be intentional.

I did enjoy the story and I will continue to read the series to see how it ends; however I feel that I would have enjoyed the book a little more if it didn't feel rushed. I think more could have been included in the book and a slower pace would have done the story justice.

One Cool Tooth Fairy!

Awesome book! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. This book is packed full of surprises! The characters seem so real and the story line just flows. It was very easy to become buried in the pages, and several hours passed before I even realized it. I can't wait for the second one!

Of Sun and Moon (Midnight Guardian Series,Book1) by Bryna Butler

I'm not sure how much I can express that I loved this novel. It's a bit out of my usual genre, but it grabbed my interest right from the start. Keira Ryan and Colby Hayes have been friends for life. So this seems to start our like one of those romance novels where the reader gets the sense right away that though they each are pursuing someone else they are meant for each other. But this is more than a romance novel; it's a fractured fairytale.(Guardian story.)

Keira has a secret she's kept even from Colby all these years. As a reader we get the sense of this early on, but the big reveal doesn't come till much later. The first third of the novel is spent mostly trying to convince us that they have an otherwise normal teen life going here. Were about to find out how untrue that is.

While Keira pursues William and Colby pursues Brooke we slowly get the sense that Keira is having some conflicting feelings. Of course right away Keira has other issues such as her explosive reaction to people teaching myths that she feels are inaccurate at best. This stems from the fact that she's secretly a tooth fairy-guardian. There are also some mysterious disappearances which will later factor into the whole story. All the while Keira is training with Nana, the woman who has raised her in place of her parents. Keira calls it piano lessens but it's far from that.

There is one thing that is almost annoying about the novel and that's the almost too easy shifting of Point of View. Mostly it's between Keira and Colby, but they often seem like conjoined twins so it actually works for them. There is at least one case where it happens within the same paragraph so I'm pretty sure there are some people I know who will have a problem with this one. Let that stand as a warning to you who know who you are.

The plot gets rather twisted and convoluted at times and surprises abound and I'm pretty sure there will be more surprises as the series moves onward. The characters are well rounded and as I mentioned the only distraction I had was the hopping back and forth between Colby and Keira almost a bit too leisurely, but for my tastes it works just fine because I could always keep track of whose head I was in.

Because of the withheld information in the first half of the novel some things do not make sense until everything unfolds at the end, which I thought worked out nicely.

This is a well written with a great plot and excellent characters good for lovers of YA Romance and Paranormal Fans.
