Mark of Cain, by Kate Sherwood

When a man is consumed by hatred, is there anything left to love?

After a tough day of counseling sessions, Anglican priest Mark Webber is looking forward to a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant. When he sees who’s bellied up to the bar, though, he reaches for his cell phone to call the police.

It’s Lucas Cain, the man who killed Mark’s brother three years ago. Apparently he’s out of jail and hanging out with his old crowd, which has to be a breach of parole, right?

Pulled over upon leaving the bar, Lucas blows a clean breathalyzer and hopes this isn’t a harbinger of things to come. He’s ready to build a sober, peaceful life. His friends aren’t ready to let him move on, though, and he ends up taking refuge in an Anglican half-way house.

Thrown together, Mark and Lucas find common ground in the struggle to help a young gay man come to terms with his sexuality—and the fight against homophobic townsfolk. As attraction grows, the past is the last stumbling block between them and a future filled with hope.

Warning: Bad boys being good, good boys being bad.

An amazing tale. I don't really need to say more, other than 'read this
By Roroblu'sMum
This is an amazingly well-written tale of love and humanity, of the good and the bad that can be found in people, of trying to do the right thing even when it would be so much easier and so much more fun to just go with the flow and do what feels good, of sacrifice, of standing up for what's right, what you believe in, what's worthy and what you want but feel you have to earn. It's a tale full of emotions, but never OTT, just a tale that leaves you with a warm feeling inside, and a sense of, 'aaaah'. It's a 5* Keeper of a tale.

If you've read Breathe by Sloan Parker, and loved it, but wished that it could have been simply a tale of leads who should not be able to be happy together, finding lasting love together, without all the annoying distractions of family and intrigue, then you'll love this tale, as it focuses mainly on Lucas, who's just out of prison for killing a man when he was 18/19, and who's still on parole for three years, and on Mark, who's a local priest whose brother Lucas killed, but who tries to do the right thing, the Christian thing, but who proves he's not above sinning and wanting revenge.

The circumstances that brought the leads together were believable and ordinary; it was refreshing that there was nothing fabricated/obvious about it, and it was clear that each struggled with their own form of guilt, but never at any point did the author make me feel as if Lucas was just a killer; he was a guy who'd been young and stupid who'd gotten drunk and into a fight, killing someone by mistake, but who'd paid the price, who'd come to terms with his demons, who'd repented, who felt himself unworthy of happiness or anything beyond a basic existence, and who was trying to do the right thing, and trying stay on the straight and narrow. I liked him from the start, and his sense of right and wrong was strong, made him a target, at times made him a bit of a victim, but he remained steadfast. He seemed incredibly mature and with a strong sense of morality, and yet at the same time, strangely naive (though I don't mean this in a derogatory way) and...innocent and almost childlike.

Mark, man of the cloth, tried to do the right thing and help his fellow man, as well as helping a gay teen, but he proved that he was simply human, and perhaps in his eagerness to do what he felt he had to, what decency should make him do, proved that he was just human and not without sin himself. That his faith was tested, and then turned against him, was both sad but cathartic, and at then end, proved to be the catalyst that would be the making of him.

I liked that the tale wasn't heavy on recriminations, but that at the same time, it wasn't all puppies, sunshine and roses, and that there were tough decisions that had to be made, that both made sacrifices, but that ultimately, there was good in both Mark and Lucas, which triumphed. If you're looking for a hot and heavy tale like Breathe, you won't be getting that in this book, at the leads don't get together until 62% of the tale has passed, but that was entirely appropriate for the leads, who had to learn to forgive, accept forgiveness, redeem themselves and learn to believe, and for the way in which the tale was written.

The ending was perfect - low key, like the leads, but with the kind of relationship that Mark had wanted, but thought he wouldn't be able to openly have, and that Lucas didn't feel was his right to have. It wasn't preachy, it wasn't heavy, but it was uplifting and positive. I loved the tale, it's as simple as that.

The full KAPOW, baby!!
By LYLBTB
Lucas Cain is 22 and has been in prison for 3 years after killing a man in a bar fight. He has just got early parole, and is now a free man once more. But he has changed. Understandably so. He kept his head down in prison doing what he needed to do to survive and he is determined to not go back. As his crime was drink related that is one of the terms of his parole. No alcohol. Others are a 9pm curfew, a place to live, and a job. So, to his old friends, he is now dead boring. And oh my God this broke my heart. He is so desperate to tow the line, follow the rules, stay free - and yet everything works against him. :-(

Anglican Rev. Mark Webber lost his brother Jimmy 3 years ago, a victim of a violent crime. Killed in a bar fight. By Lucas Cain. He and his family are devastated to hear of Luke's early release and when Mark sees Luke in town, in the pub, supposedly drinking and right back in the swing of it with his motley crew of friends, well, Mark loses it. He calls the police to dob Luke in. This starts a spiral of decline for Mark. The good guy is no longer so good. I thought Kate portrayed his struggle so well. He does so much in the community - including running the halfway house for ex-cons, but of course when it becomes personal it puts a whole different slant on things. Mark also has a lot of other stuff going on - he is openly gay and everything is fine with his bosses in the church. Or so it seems. Everything is unravelling for him :-(

This book could have been depressing. It wasn't. The issues it dealt with had my mind racing! The hypocrisy of the church. The small mindedness of the community who are happy enough to embrace a gay minister so long as, you know, he doesn't flaunt it by actually having a boyfriend. The audacity of it!! :-P It also focuses on forgiveness - by others you may have hurt, but as importantly by yourself. And of course we have rehabilitation. I could argue this til the cows come home. I believe so strongly in the absolute necessity of helping rehabilitate ex-prisoners so they can become contributing members once more, or maybe for the first time. *puts soap box away*

There are also some really sweet moments - pushy squirrels, stray hoses requiring the removal of wet t-shirts, and a cantankerous old lady whose bark is worse than her bite. Alex and Elise were wonderful side characters. And damn but I felt bad for Sean too - I always want redemption and he deserves a shot...... you will need to read the book to meet these characters, and see just how engaging they all are. :-) This book is highly recommended. Go. Buy the book!

This is not your usual MM romance. There is no fluff. There is not a lot of hot steamy sex. There are no easy answers or quick fixes. There is however a fantastic story about how one tragic, stupid moment in time can change your life forever.

This book deals with real life situations that will be make you uncomfortable, challenge what you think and believe and make you ask questions of yourself.

If you killed someone, accidentally or not, and were paroled after serving a short time in prison would you believe you deserved to be free?

If you were the brother of someone killed, accidentally or not, and their murderer was released on parole early how would you react?

Lucas and his friends are what I guess you could call a small town gang. They are rebels, don’t always agree with the law and cause a lot of trouble. They are still only teenagers when Lucas gets into a bar fight one night. In a split second, with a bottle as a weapon, a man is left dead. No amount of remorse, praying or rehabilitation will ever change the circumstances but does the young man that swung the bottle deserve to carry on with his life? Should he be forever banished from a civilised society? Can anyone who kills another human being be successfully rehabilitated?

In the three years that Lucas spends in jail he fundamentally changes. He is put through counselling, training and learns to follow rules and set boundaries. He is given early parole, with a lot of restrictions, giving him an element of his freedom back. Does he deserve that freedom when a man is still dead?

Marks brother was killed in the bar that fateful night. Mark is an Anglican Priest and counsels his parishioners on love and forgiveness. He cannot however, initially, find forgiveness for his brothers murderer who is now walking the same streets as he is. Mark has never had his faith challenged as deeply but he is innately good and recognises when his actions have been inappropriate and caused problems.

Lucas may have changed in the last three years but sadly his friends haven’t. His life is no longer compatible and he soon has to leave his past behind in order to survive. He ends up in a half way house where Mark is in charge. Mark tries very hard to hate Lucas but circumstances show that maybe his strongly held opinions of the man may be incorrect. Lucas is subdued and full of regret, almost submissive in the way he wants to follow orders and routine and not at all what Mark expects.

This book deals a lot with forgiveness. Even at the end I am not sure Lucas has really forgiven himself. Could Mark ever really forgive a man for taking the life of his brother no matter how strong his belief in God and forgiveness? The one think I would have liked to see was some sort of discussion between the two men about what happened that night three years ago. Would that have helped either of them with closure?

It is quite a heavy and challenging read but very much worth it. IMO it is a book that will make you question your beliefs and feelings, it will make you think, which is never a bad thing for a book to do. What of Sean? Will we ever learn of his fate?

Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools, by Diane Ravitch

From one of the foremost authorities on education in the United States, former U.S. assistant secretary of education, “whistle-blower extraordinaire” (The Wall Street Journal), author of the best-selling The Death and Life of the Great American School System(“Important and riveting”—Library Journal),The Language Police(“Impassioned . . . Fiercely argued . . . Every bit as alarming as it is illuminating”—The New York Times), andother notable books on education history and policy—an incisive, comprehensive look at today’s American school system that argues against those who claimitis broken and beyond repair; an impassioned but reasoned call to stop the privatization movement that is draining students and funding from our public schools.
InReign of Error, Diane Ravitch argues that the crisis in American education is not a crisis of academic achievement but a concerted effort to destroypublic schoolsin this country. She makes clear that, contrary to the claims being made, public school test scores and graduation rates are the highest they’ve everbeen, anddropout rates areat their lowest point.

Shearguesthatfederal programs such as George W. Bush’s No Child Left BehindandBarack Obama’sRace to the Topsetunreasonable targets for American students, punish schools, andresult inteachersbeing firedif their students underperform, unfairly brandingthose educators as failures. She warns that major foundations, individual billionaires, and Wall Street hedge fund managers are encouraging the privatization of public education, some for idealistic reasons, others for profit. Many who work with equity funds are eyeing public education as an emerging market for investors.
Reign of Errorbegins where The Death and Life of the Great American School Systemleftoff, providing a deeper argument against privatization and for public education, andin a chapter-by-chapter breakdown, putting forth a plan for what can be done to preserveand improve it. She makesclear what is right about U.S.education, how policy makers are failing to address the root causes of educational failure, andhow we can fix it.

For Ravitch, public school education is about knowledge, aboutlearning, about developingcharacter, and about creating citizens for our society. It’s abouthelping to inspireindependent thinkers, not just honing job skills or preparing people for college. Public school educationis essential to our democracy, andits aim, since the founding of this country, has been toeducatecitizens who will help carry democracy into the future.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Education scholar Ravitch follows The Death and Life of the Great American School System (2010) with a well-researched and insightful critique of current efforts at public education reform. Putting the current “privatization movement” in the broader historical context of public school reform, Ravitch argues that there never was an ideal time when social inequities didn’t fall hardest on poor and minority students. Instead of focusing exclusively on fixing what is considered wrong with public schools, policy makers should enact antipoverty initiatives to reduce racial and socioeconomic inequality reflected in inadequate health care and preschool learning even before children enter school, she contends. Though she concedes historic and current shortcomings, Ravitch debunks myths regarding declining high-school graduation rates and challenges the validity of standardized tests results, international test scores, and teacher accountability measured by students’ test results. Ravitch tackles hot-button issues, including charter schools, and takes particular aim at Teach for America and school reform leader Michelle Rhee, questioning the sincerity of conservative foundations backing the movement in an effort to dismantle public education. Ravitch advocates for more rigorous preschools, smaller class sizes, better teacher training, and comprehensive social services, among other initiatives, in this passionate plea to protect the nation’s public schools from privatization. --Vanessa Bush

Review

Praise for Diane Ravitch’s
REIGN OF ERROR

“The most clear-headed and influential critic of privatization is Diane Ravitch, who has earned a reputation as an independent thinker. Refusing to embrace the formulas of left and right, she attacks politically correct speech codes as intelligently as she criticizes the free-market faith in competition. She has also been willing to change her mind in public: at one time an advocate of standardized testing, she is now a skeptic. And this skepticism animates her broader critique in Reign of Error, a book that dispels the clouds of reform rhetoric to reveal the destructiveness of the privatization agenda.”
—Jackson Lear, Commonweal

“No matter what side of the debate the reader is on, Ms. Ravitch provides a thought-provoking look at some of the major challenges facing public education today.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Those who have grown increasingly alarmed at seeing public education bartered off piece by piece, and seeing schools and teachers thrown into a state of siege, will be grateful for this cri de Coeur—a fearless book, a manifesto, and a cry to battle.”
-Jonathan Kozol, New York Times Book Review

“Ravtich’s critique of the corporate reformers’ manufactured agenda, along with the truly progressive alternatives she offers, shows us a way to begin the long haul toward improving democracy’s classrooms.”
 -Joseph Featherstone, The Nation

“Diane Ravitch [is] arguably our leading historian of primary and secondary education.”
-Andrew Delbanco, The New York Review of Books

“Ravitch has emerged as the most consistent and searching criticof the contemporaryeducation-reform movement.”
 -Walter Russell Mead, Foreign Affairs

“No education or social issues library should be without this book.”
 -Diane C. Donovan, California Bookwatch

“The best word I can come up with to describe the Ravitch of today is muckraking – reform-minded journalism that aims to expose misconduct and conspiracy…We need public figures like Ravitch to highlight perilous trends (and illuminate promising trends)…Reign of Error is a must-read book.”
-Sam Chaltain, Education Week

“[Ravitch] presents real solutions, not only to improve our public schools, but also to improve the lives of the children who walk their halls.”
-Darcie Chimarusti, NewsWorks

“[Ravitch] is a devastating social critic who is well aware of the current political environment. Ravitch is able to skewer this agenda so efficiently because she’s seen it all before…Ravitch’s candor stands in stark contrast to the bromides of the corporate reformers, who have pretty much left any attempts at integration out of their schemes.”
-NEA.org (National Education Association)

“Read this book and keep it somewhere within arm’s length for the next decade or so.”
-Jose Vilson, Educator, writer, activist

“Diane Ravitch has emerged as an iconic figure on America’s political landscape. What Daniel Ellsberg was to the Vietnam War, Ravitch has become to the battle raging over public education – a truth-teller with the knowledge that comes from decades on the inside of the education ‘reform’ movement.”
-Anthony Cody, Education Week Teacher

“Reign of Error is a must-read; brilliant concise and elegant in dissecting and countering the corporate reform myths…You will never find a more succinct and compelling book than Reign of Error, with a crystal clear analysis of the way in which our schools are being driven into the ground by the Billionaire Boys club of Gates, Broad, Walton, Murdoch, and Bloomberg, and other ideologues and opportunists eager to join in. We must win this battle for the soul of our education system before it’s too late.
-NYC Public School Parent

“Diane Ravitch is America’s foremost educational historian. In each chapter Ravitch provides detailed, clear explanations of the relevant data… She is a thorough and careful scholar. As important as her previous book was, Ravitch has outdone that with this magnum opus. This book is by far her finest work, and something which everyone truly concerned about education should read.”
-Daily Kos

“I advise all public school teachers to read Ravitch’s book. Her experience makes her writing rich. Reformers do not like her because she exposes them…Her critics attack her personally because they cannot dent the substance that is Ravitch’s Reign of Error. She has pulled their reformer pants down in public. There they stand, red-faced and embarrassed. Ravitch is fighting for us. Buy the book.”
-The Huffington Post

“I knew a lot about what happened to black public schools in Mississippi, but had concerns about how to go about building a better system. After reading REIGN OF ERROR I now know exactly how to proceed. Mississippi is indeed the exception that the whole world believes it to be. I promised God that if I kept living I would spend the rest of my life moving Mississippi blacks from the bottom to the top. Thanks to Diane Ravitch I now know what has to be done.”
-James Meredith, author of Three Years in Mississippi

“Diane Ravitch is the Martin Luther King and Joan of Arc of American education, a fearless crusader for every American child, parent and teacher. In Reign of Error, she reveals the shocking lack of evidence behind many of the radical experiments being forced on our public school children and families by tragically misguided politicians and non-educators. Most important, she lays out a vision of evidence-based, authentic education reforms that hold great promise for America to lead and inspire the world again. Every American parent, teacher and citizen interested in our future should read this book. What Silent Spring and The Fate of the Earth did for the environmental and antinuclear movements, this book should do for the cause of improving America's public schools.
-William Doyle, author of A Soldier’s Dream

“Diane Ravitch's must read book makes a compelling case for the essential purpose of public education. She debunks the myths of its failures --and of the market reformers' successes-- and points to real doable investments that will make public education the gateway to the American dream for all ourchildren.”
-Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers

“Diane Ravitch’s Reign of Error takes the myths surrounding public education head on and provides her readers with logic and reasoning sorely missing from the current debate. Diane is a fierce warrior against the so-called reformers whose ideology exacerbates the problems of poverty and inequity. Reign of Error takes on each of the common myths and blows them up with the reformers’ own holy grail – DATA!! Data that disputes the miracle schools, the effects of poverty and myth of the dropout factors. Ravitch also takes on the Billionaire Boys Club with swipes at their handmaidens of destruction, including Michelle Rhee, Joel Klein, and Wendy Kopp, and the book provides the solutions that will change the trajectory away from so-called destructive innovation towards equitable, high quality education for all children.”
—Karen GJ Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union

“American educational reformers have fashioned a narrative that has become so pervasive that it has effectively silenced alternative accounts. In this courageous book Diane Ravitch persuasivelychallenges both the narrative's presentation and analysis of data and its underlying value system.”

-Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education Harvard Graduate School of Education

Reign of Error: A Review
By writerinthesky
Dr. Ravitch shatters one corporate reform myth after another with clarity providing excellent background information in the Notes and Appendix of this book.

Because of her courageousness and direct approach, expect the corporate media to attack her because no one is left standing in this book, at least on the reform side, from President Obama's support of school privatization to the machinations of Michelle Rhee.

This book is a perfect reference guide to all things ed reform. Don't understand much about test scores? Check out the chapters "The Facts About Test Scores" and "The Facts About International Test Scores". Don't know the history of Michelle Rhee? Go to "The Mystery of Michele Rhee". How about the Parent Trigger? Read the chapter "Parent Trigger or Parent Tricker". (Love the title).

The best part is that after Dr. Ravitch explains all things corporate reform, she provides real solutions to the challenges of public education. The answers aren't easy, there is no silver bullet as she explains, but the solutions are based on a wide range and depth of knowledge, history, experience and good old-fashion common sense.

And the cover? You can't miss it. A marketing ploy? Possibly. This book will stand out in bookstores and in history as a go-to guide on public education in this decade.

Now for some specifics.

In the Introduction, Dr. Ravitch states:

"The purpose of this book is to answer four questions.

First, is American education in crisis?

Second, is American education failing and declining?

Third, what is the evidence for the reforms now being promoted by the federal government
and adopted in many states?

Fourth, what should we do to improve our schools and the lives of children?"

A tall order but Dr. Ravitch accomplishes this by the end of the book and beyond with a comprehensive set of book notes and an appendix with all of the graphs and charts that any statistician would love.

Each chapter is detailed with information that makes this book an excellent reference guide.

In her chapter, "Our Schools Are at Risk", Dr. Ravitch states:

"Public education is not broken. It is not failing or declining. The diagnosis is wrong, and the solutions of the corporate reformers are wrong. Our urban schools are in trouble because of concentrated poverty and racial segregation. But public education is not "broken". Public education is in a crisis only so far as society is and only so far as this new narrative of crisis has destabilized it."

Dr. Ravitch continues further in the chapter:

"As a society, we must establish goals, strategies, and programs to reduce poverty and racial segregation. Only by eliminating opportunity gaps can we eliminate achievement gaps. Poor and immigrant children need the same sorts of schools that wealthy children have, only more so. Those who start life with the fewest advantages need even smaller class sizes, even more art, science and music to engage them, to spark their creativity, and to fulfill their potential."

In the chapter "The Context for Corporate Reform", Dr. Ravitch describes the hidden cost of the Common Core Standards, the part that the US Department of Education does not explain to the states or school districts. The estimate is $16 billion.

She then goes into more detail about the Common Core Standards, how it has not been field tested and yet has been embraced by edupreneurs thanks to the efforts of the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, and his Chief of Staff, Joanne Weiss, formerly with the New Schools Venture Fund.

Dr. Ravitch has done her homework.

On the subject of test scores, Dr. Ravitch in the chapter titled "The Facts About Test Scores", describes in detail the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reporting on student test scores in the US and abroad, how they should be interpreted and points out that Guggenheim, in his movie "Waiting for Superman", misinterpreted the test scores.

In her chapter titled "The Facts About the Achievement Gap", Ravitch responds to the claim that the corporate reform movement is the "civil rights issue of our time". Dr. Ravitch writes:

"It defies reason to believe that Martin Luther King, Jr. would march arm in arm with Wall Street hedge fund managers and members of ALEC to lead a struggle for the privatization of public education, the crippling of unions, and the establishment of for-profit schools. Privatization inevitably means deregulation, greater segregation, and less equity, with minimal oversight by public authorities. Privatization has typically not been a friend to powerless groups."

Then Dr. Ravitch continues with a thorough evaluation of what is termed "The Achievement Gap".

In her chapter "The Contradictions of Charter Schools", Dr. Ravitch writes:

"Reasonable people may reach different conclusions on the question of whether charter schools are truly public schools. Charter school operators have asked the courts and the National Labor Relations Board to rule that they are private entities, private employers and private contractors. This seems reason enough to conclude that they are private actors and that their expansion represents privatization."

Later in the chapter, Dr. Ravitch breaks down the amount of money spent on students in charter schools as opposed to students in public schools. Charter schools spend significantly less on their pupils than their public school counterparts and instead spend more money on administration, not teachers.

Next, Charter Management Organizations (CMO's) and Educational Management Organizations (EMO's). Diane Ravitch describes how they drain school districts of money. She also describes online learning with a focus on the financial enterprise, Rocketship, and how that style of education compares to students attending a private school. It doesn't.

In the "Parent Trigger, Parent Tricker" chapter, Dr. Ravitch describes the involvement of the Parent Revolution with the Adelanto and McKinley schools in California. If you are not familiar with these schools and what happened, read the book. Again, Ravitch goes into detail on the subject of the Parent Trigger and the Parent Revolution.

There is a chapter titled "Schools Don't Improve if They Are Closed". The title says it all in terms of the goals of ed reformers, to close schools if they are "failing"...and then turn them into charter schools. This chapter exposes the fact there is no evidence that closing schools aids the students or their community and in fact hinders the educational process.

Chapter 21 starts with solutions to the issue of public education and how to reach the goals that most of us share, an educated citizenry that has a solid knowledge base and is capable of critical and creative thought.

I'm not going to describe the solutions. You'll need to read the book for that critical piece.

What I will say is buy two copies of this book, one for you and another for a friend, parent, teacher, an administrator or anyone else who wants to gain insight into where we are, where we need to be and how to get there.

Read Reign of Error.

Ravitch serves up the main course
By Ralph L. Ratto
It was a foreshadowing event in 2011 when Diane Ravitch received the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize from the American Academy of Political and Social Science. Moynihan believed that ”Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.” Diane Ravitch expounds on that philosophy in her new book, Reign of Error. Within the first few pages of her book, Ravitch artfully unmasks the agenda of the ‘education reformers’. She states,

Recognizing that most Americans have a strong attachment to their community schools, the corporate reformers have taken care to describe their aims in psuedo-populist terms. While trying to scare us with warnings of dire peril, they mask their agenda with rhetoric that is soothing and deceptive.

In Reign of Error, Ravitch provides proof, back by solid research, that the corporate reformers have presented their opinions as facts. She addresses every single claim these corporate reforms use as a pretext to attack our nation’s public school structure, our nation’s teachers, and our nation’s unions. She includes the research, charts, tables, and empirical studies that form the strong foundation of her work.

Ravitch provides the proof, that our schools are not failing, the achievement gap is closing, we are not falling behind other nations, high school and graduation rates are at all time highs, poverty is being ignored, test scores are not the way to evaluate teachers, merit pay is a failure, and the importance of tenure. Ravitch exposes the audacity of Michelle Rhee, charter schools, parent trigger and virtual schools. Ravitch also lays out a clear concise course of action towards the essentials of a good education. Challenging our nation to reverse the reformists aims towards destruction.

The reformers are already attacking Ravitch’s masterpiece with rhetoric fueled by ad hominem attacks. That’s the first clue, Ravitch has it right. Opinion does not stand up to facts.

The thousand of educators that follow Ravitch’s blog, will realize that Ravitch has only fed us a daily appetizer with her multiple postings. Reign of Error is the much anticipated main course, served up on a silver platter with all the trimmings.

This is a must read for all those who value our nation’s most valuable assets, our children and their public schools. Arm yourself with the facts.. Moynihan was right.

Ravitch: Modern-Day Dewey
By imagine
While the title smacks of sensationalism, Reign of Error is actually a methodical dismantling of the many myths degrading public education and a detailed historical account of the privatization movement fueling the myths. Ravitch was soul searching in The Death and Life of the Great American School System. In Reign of Error, Ravitch has found her voice. She is unapologetic in her defense of public schools and takes on the reformers intent on injecting their free market ideology into public education.

While Ravitch is a superhero to many discouraged public educators, she rejects superhero solutions to public education problems. "I have no silver bullets--because none exist--but I have proposals based on evidence and experience," writes Ravitch. A life lived looking at schools certainly affords her this perspective. Reign of Error spells out the comprehensive, community-wide solutions required to support public schools plagued with socioeconomic problems larger than what public educators can handle by themselves.

For those of us who have regularly followed Ravitch's recent work, we do not find anything in her new book shocking. Many of my own blog postings have piggy-backed off Ravitch's thoughtful work. Ravitch calls for tried-and-true reforms focusing on equity, improving early childhood care, ending high-stakes testing, expanding middle class-like enrichment to needy students, developing and respecting educators, reducing class sizes, fully funding public education, and more.

Reign of Error will hopefully serve as an antithesis to the 1983 Nation at Risk, which was the catalyst for thirty years of misplaced blame put on public schools for what in reality are problems caused by trends. Ravitch calls for a re-do on school reform. As Ravitch stated, "You can't do the right things until you stop doing the wrong things."

Public education advocates will also not be surprised to see the free market reformers lash out with well-funded, emotional messages attacking Ravitch. Reign of Error outs the reformers trying to raze public education. Their typical defense is to speak loudly and attack the messenger. This is, after all, just part of the free market process. For market-focused reformers to get ahead, government-run education must not succeed. Free marketeers pretend to be reforming when they are actually focused on destroying. Sadly, America's neediest kids get pinned under the rubble.

To more fully understand the attacks on public education in Wisconsin, more public education supporters must understand the bigger game.

Be a player. Be informed. Read Reign of Error.

Refugees, Terror and Other Troubles with the Neighbors: Against the Double Blackmail, by Slavoj Zizek

Called "the Elvis of cultural theory" by The New York Times, popular philosopher and leftist rabble-rouser Slavoj Zizek, looks at one of the most desperate situations of our time: the current refugee crisis overwhelming Europe.

In this short yet stirring book, Zizek argues that accepting all comers or blocking all entry are both untenable solutions... but there is a third option.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people, desperate to escape war, violence and poverty, are crossing the Mediterranean to seek refuge in Europe. Our response, from our protected Western European standpoint, argues Slavoj Zizek, offers two versions of ideological blackmail: either we open our doors as widely as possible; or we try to pull up the drawbridge. Both solutions are bad, states Zizek. They merely prolong the problem, rather than tackling it.

The refugee crisis also presents an opportunity, a unique chance for Europe to redefine itself: but, if we are to do so, we have to start raising unpleasant and difficult questions. We must also acknowledge that large migrations are our future: only then can we commit to a carefully prepared process of change, one founded not on a community that see the excluded as a threat, but one that takes as its basis the shared substance of our social being.

The only way, in other words, to get to the heart of one of the greatest issues confronting Europe today is to insist on the global solidarity of the exploited and oppressed. Maybe such solidarity is a utopia. But, warns Zizek, if we don't engage in it, then we are really lost. And we will deserve to be lost.

Enjoyed the book and the movie!
By CoachD
This novel provides plenty of background information to the movie. We get a deeper look into each character and to the situation at hand. A few years ago I exchanged some e-mails with David Morrel, author of First Blood. I wrote to him that I would liked to have read a novelization of Rambo (4th film). He said fans were not interested in novelizations anymore due to the rapid turn around time from when a movie opens to the time the Blu-ray is available. I disagree. If I like a movie I would love to read a novelization of it. Same here. Lots of additional thoughts are there for us readers. Plus it is written by Marvin Wolfman, always a Plus to me.

A must read if only once then pass on

The best movie tie in book ever ! a must read if you were miffed at the movie. Expands the movie( loved it by the way) adds depth to all the characters they didn't have time for in the restricted movie length. Also has most of the joker/harley scenes that D.C., had the director cut out to keep the PG 13 rating. Yes the pair will be getting their own rated R movie , but it was nice to see read if not see a joker/ Harley me in tune with comics.

The good, the bad, and the in-between
By Anise
As we all know, the Suicide Squad film had some serious issues. And going by what was onscreen alone, there was really no way to figure out how much of this had to do with studio interference, and how much was intrinsic to factors such as the script being written in six weeks (!) Does the novelization clear up the question one way or the other? Well... yes and no. Spoilers ahead...

The Good: The characterizations are, for the most part, much more in depth. Their interactions are more believable. The narrative is clearly from the hard-R script that David Ayer almost certainly originally came up with, so it feels more authentic. The book begins with Dr. June Moone finding the Enchantress statue in a cave, which would make so much more sense as an opening scene. It's ridiculous to have June Moone/Enchantress as such a central part of the plot onscreen when she's essentially suddenly stuck in halfway through with no buildup. The Joker/Harley relationship is portrayed so much more realistically-- this is basically where they were back in the day, before Harley struck out on her own. If she's going to grow as a character, which she certainly did in the graphic novels, then she has to start here. It was much more offensive (IMHO) to see the abusive nature of the early relationship played down on film, because then we don't see what she eventually rejects (especially in her new series.) Overall, there's just so much more depth. BUT...

The Bad:
The book DOES NOT contain everything that was in the original script, or everything that was filmed. After the extended edition of the film came out, it's especially easy to see that a lot was still missing in the book. There are many scenes both in the extended edition and also glimpsed in the trailers that don't show up in the book at all. Yes, I know, other reviewers are saying that it's all there, but it isn't. Just go through all the added extended scenes in the movie-- a lot of that is not in the book, including the scene where Harley chases Joker on the motorcycle and then confronts him. Count up all the material that was teased in the trailer-- mostly not in the book. For instance, we still don't really see the "I can't wait to show you my toys" scene-- it's *kind of* hinted at in the book... maybe? But not actually there. We don't see the deleted scenes that were written about in that Reddit article, and while there's no way to know for sure if any of that was ever actually shot or even in the shooting script... potential readers should know not to expect any of that when they buy the book. Basically, there's extra material in the book for sure. But there's still a lot, a LOT of stuff that either certainly or probably existed in the original movie and then got cut out... and it's not here either. So we still don't know what was really in the original version of the narrative.

Just as in the movie, a lot of the narrative sags and drags about 2/3 of the way through for a looooong time.
It still does not seem believable at all that this group of ragtag killer misfits suddenly bonds and becomes one big happy family.
It isn't any easier to believe that they suddenly became besties with Flag, or didn't just shoot him and run away when he disabled the neck bombs.
The Enchantress is still a basically silly villain, although she at least makes more sense in the novelization. I suspect-- and I think you will too-- that her role was cut down on film because Cara Delevinge is a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad actress. But even if she'd had the onscreen charisma of Margot Robbie, the character would still feel unconnected to everything else in the story-- and in the book, she does too.

In a lot of ways, the book does illustrate the issues with the movie, both good and bad. I think that through reading it, you do see that the film could have been much better... but you also understand that it had fundamental problems from the start. Overall, this is more than worth reading, and the author is certainly great. So if you're interested in getting a much more in-depth feel for what the director wanted Suicide Squad to be... I would recommend the book.
