Write Beside Them: Risk, Voice, and Clarity in High School Writing, by Penny Kittle

"This book is about teaching writing and the gritty particulars of teaching adolescents. But it is also the planning, the thinking, the writing, the journey: all I've been putting into my teaching for the last two decades. This is the book I wanted when I was first given ninth graders and a list of novels to teach. This is a book of vision and hope and joy, but it is also a book of genre units and minilessons and actual conferences with students."
-Penny Kittle

What makes the single biggest difference to student writers? When the invisible machinery of your writing processes is made visible to them. Write Beside Them shows you how to do it. It's the comprehensive book and DVD that English/language arts teachers need to ensure that teens improve their writing.

Across genres, Penny Kittle presents a flexible framework for instruction, the theory and experience to back it up, and detailed teaching information to help you implement it right away. Each section of Write Beside Them describes a specific element of Kittle's workshop:

  • Daily writing practice: writer's notebooks and quick writes
  • Instructional frameworks: minilessons, organization, conferring, and sharing drafts
  • Genre work: narrative, persuasion, and writing in multiple genres
  • Skills work: grammar, punctuation, and style
  • Assessment: evaluation, feedback, portfolios, and grading.

All along the way, Kittle demonstrates minilessons that respond to students' immediate needs, and her Student Focus sections profile and spotlight how individual writers grew and changed over the course of her workshop. In addition, Write Beside Them provides a study guide, reproducibles, writing samples from Penny and her students, suggestions for nurturing your own writing life, and a helpful FAQ. Best of all, the accompanying DVD takes you right inside Penny's classroom. Its video clips explicitly model how to make the process of writing accessible to all kids.

Penny Kittle's active coaching and can-do attitude alone will energize your teaching and inspire you to write with your students. But her strategies, expert advice, and compelling in-class video footage will help you turn inspiration into great teaching. Read Write Beside Them and discover that the most important influence for all young writers is their teacher.

"Write Beside Them debuts as the field's most comprehensive, contemporary, and practical book on high school writing. Kittle not only tells how a skillful writing teacher operates, she shows you on the accompanying DVD, with clips of kids at work in every stage of a writing workshop. And all this glorious teaching happens with real, sometimes struggling kids who remind us of our own classrooms and students. Write Beside Them is the whole package."

Kittle rocks
By Stephanie Andrus
I actually bought this book because of another writing instruction book I read -- "Write Like This" by Kelly Gallagher, which was also awesome. I am only half way through this book and I am really inspired to shift my view as to my purpose as a writing teacher. Kittle reminded my why I love to write. Over the years, I have become so obsessed with teaching academia to my middle schoolers, that I seem to have lost place of why we even communicate in the first place.

I understand that this book is directed at high school age kids (she mostly discusses her HS seniors), and I have junior high school kids, but everything she discusses is totally applicable to them.

Something for Everyone
By Julie in West Chester
Write Beside Them is written with voice, humor, and humility. Penny Kittle does not tell us she has the perfect class with the perfect student. She tells us how to stick with what we believe to help our students achieve their fullest potential.
I teach third grade (self-contained) and still gained so much insight into writing workshop with a constructivist approach by reading Penny's book.
The dvd is phenomenal! It has her first day of class, her conferring with students, student work . . .
I think writing teachers of grades 3 and up can gain from this book although it is geared to high school English teachers.
Penny also refers to the work of other great writing teachers - Don Murray, Don Graves, Tom Romano, Tom Newkirk, Linda Reif, Nancy Atwell; it helps to have all these resources that readers can turn to for more information.

By Woodland Park Writer
“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green is amazing, loveable read that any one and every one should read. I gave this book a five star review because the characterization of Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace, the astonishing wording that Green uses for dialogue for his main characters and how this book stray from the “normal” teenage romance novel.
For example, we as a society have forgotten that not all teenagers are stuck up, illiterate, annoying adolescents. Everything has become acceptable to our overall society and when someone, especially when a teenager steps out of that mold and into an intellectual considerate mode it’s a rarity. Green uses this to his advantage with Gus and Hazel. Standing up to society’s mold of a teenager and their intelligence is something astounding. Since Gus and Hazel are survivors/surviving cancer they both know how to break the mold. Their dialogue and characterization shows just how they are.
Augustus “Gus” Waters who has/is suffering osteosarcoma is a very modern day Romeo. I say this not to be clich but as a comparison. He (Gus) comes into Hazel Grace’s life out of nowhere, one would say spontaneously and sweeps her off her feet. Romancing her any way he could he won her “grenade” of a heart. Even as Hazel pushes him away he stays right by her side. He has a higher intelligence level then most guys I know and he makes one hell of a boyfriend. Hazel on the other hand is almost afraid of love. So far she sounds like the normal girl in a normal romance novel but she also suffers from cancer. She fears love, not because of the routine reasons (daddy issues, past loves leaving etc…) but because she is a grenade. Hazel quotes many times in the book, “When I go I want to minimize the casualties.” Now that’s a REAL reason to be afraid to love.
The third example is how Green characterized Hazel and Gus. He could’ve done anything else. Made them enemies or they meet sooner in their lives. But no he makes his move perfectly. Just when Hazel is feeling depressed and ready Gus comes in like a curve ball in the middle of the ninth inning, winning the game. No matter what the two face they stick together and it’s not in a cheesy way either it’s as if it’s completely natural and actually happened.
Green did an amazing job and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a little infinity or a larger infinity.

Too Busy Not to Pray, by Bill Hybels

For over two decades Too Busy Not to Pray has stood as a classic on prayer, helping Christians all over the world slow down to draw near to God. During those years, the world certainly hasn't slowed down. If anything, the pace, intensity and number of distractions have only increased. Brokenness and pain seem to have increased as well, with news of civil war, poverty, broken families and sex-trafficking touching us daily. The urgent need for prayer is clear, but busyness still keeps many of us from finding time to pray. Two truths haven't changed in all these years: God is the same powerful, just, holy God he's always been; and true prayer―prayer that changes us and allows us to participate in God's work in the world―can't happen on the fly. So Bill Hybels once again offers us his practical, time-tested ideas on slowing down to pray. Revised throughout and including a new introduction and new chapter on prayer and compassion for the world, this twentieth-anniversary edition of Too Busy Not to Pray calls both young and old to make prayer a priority, and broadens our vision for what our eternal, powerful God does when his people slow down to pray.

A Helpful Word on Slowing Down
By Andrew A. Hedges
(2nd edition, InterVarsity Press, 1998.)

In his usual relevant, personal style, Bill Hybels promotes a practical look at the discipline of prayer in a believer's life. This is not simply a truth he teaches but one he has personally applied. We can desire his results when he says "the greatest thrill has been the qualitative difference in my relationship with God" (11). We can relate to his struggles when he readily admits that "the real reason my prayers were weak was that my faith was weak" (31). We can begin to follow his journey into a life of prayer by considering his take on re-ordering life - "We just cannot grow with no structure, no sense of intentionality about our spiritual life, any more than we can lower our body fat or develop good muscle tone or increase our net worth by just sitting back and waiting for whatever happens" (44). Too Busy Not to Pray would be a helpful beginning for some while it might be too light for others.

In terms of weaknesses, we can consider the loose biblical support for this look at prayer. As an example, Hybels begins his journey with a very exciting look at the newly rescued Hebrews and their battle with Amalek. Hybels is not alone in his interpretation of this text as one supporting prayer, but many theologians would disagree. In Exodus 17, Moses raises his staff, and Joshua wins. When his arms are lowered, the Hebrews struggle. Two come alongside to hold up Moses' arms and thus the staff to ensure the win for the Hebrews. Nowhere in this text does Moses mouth words of prayer, nor do we see any evidence later of this being an instance of prayer. It is a beautiful picture of God's power and protection ("The LORD is my banner"), but it does not adequately fit a foundational text on prayer. Yet Hybels suggests that "Moses discovered that day that God's prevailing power is released through prayer" (15).

Another difficulty with the book is the, perhaps, overemphasis of blessings or results from prayer. Hybels suggests that "Prayer is the key to unlocking God's prevailing power in your life" (16). As a result, he uses the first half of his work to focus more on blessings from prayer as opposed to sacrifice. He gets to that point later when he speaks candidly about time and priority, but it left something to be desired to show the sense of humility and sacrifice apparent in the prayerful life. While it is true that "when we make a habit of prayer, we stay constantly tuned to God's presence and open to receive his blessings" (43); we must also be aware that prayer is done with God's best in mind as opposed to our hopeful rewards for speaking with Him.

Hybels also offers a look at The Lord's Prayer in Chapters 5 & 6. It is helpful in that it encourages a time set aside for prayer as well as considering the pattern present in Jesus' words. However, Hybels treats this too much like a formula for receiving the above-mentioned blessings. "Once I've worshiped God , confessed my sins, and given thanks, it's okay for me to take our my shopping list" (72). Later he states: "Nothing motivates people to develop their prayer lives more than unanswered prayers. And once the prayer busters are dealt with and dispatched, the way is clear for God to answer one prayer after another" (109). This would surely be an encouragement to young believers to enter a life of prayer, but it also does not provide a biblically balanced perspective that would serve as a foundation for the Christian life. Hybels deals shortly with unanswered prayer, and he admits this will be a great, unexplained struggle for the believer. Perhaps considering Jesus' prayer inGethsemanewould be helpful here in our sacrificial obedience to the Lord's will as opposed to an over-emphasized importance on getting our needs and wants met.

On the other hand, Hybels practically and masterfully works through the idea of his subtitle in the final chapters of the book. As we enter the prayerful life, there is a real important for slowing down to be with God. Hybels suggests that "prayer needs to be part of the rhythm of our daily lives" (115). This step in spiritual growth is a process, or, as Hybels states: "It is a walk - a supernatural walk with a living, dynamic, communicating God. Thus the heart and soul of the Christian life is learning to hear God's voice and developing the courage to do what he tells us to do" (125). The genius of this book is in these final chapters. For here, Hybels cuts us to the quick when he states that "any way you cut it, a key ingredient in authentic Christianity is time. Not leftover time, not throwaway time, but quality time. Time for contemplation, meditation and reflection. Unhurried, uninterrupted time" (126). He even offers immediate, practical steps to beginning this life. For example: "Suppose that right after reading this chapter you put down the book and quiet your spirit before God. You wait until you are focused on him, and then you say, `Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening' (1 Samuel 3:9). In the solitude and stillness, what might God say to you?" (149).

Another strength is in his three "tests" for our prayers. He encourages the reader to ask whether our prayers are consistent with Scripture, consistent with our gifting, and whether they promote servanthood or self. These are helpful points with which we can grasp and apply to our lives right away as we enter into a life marked by prayer. The focus of Hybels life is shown through this writing in that "faith comes from looking at God, not at the mountain" (76). It is evident that Hybels has a concern for people and a love for God's Word. He attests to this in giving a personal illustration of how he reads through Scripture: "I read and reread all those stories about God's power over nature until once again I was convinced that they really happened in history" (33).

For someone looking to grow in the area of prayer, Too Busy Not to Pray would be a practical guide if read alongside a classical, theological work on prayer to provide a balanced perspective. Again, we would all do well to consider the last half of this book and seek to make immediate applications. However if we are seeking a deep, biblical understanding of prayer, we might do well to seek elsewhere.

What Barack Obama and the Liberal Media Do NOT Want You To Know About Dating, Women, and Relationships

Why Would the Liberal Media LIE to You About How Women Really Think?

Yes, it sounds crazy: if you are failing with women, the liberal media is to blame.

Over the past 30 years the portrayal of men has changed dramatically. Gone is the rugged, action oriented individual, replaced by the simpering, submissive fool, begging for the strong Mommy-figure to save him. This covert programming has an insidious effect on men, subtly encouraging dependency while denigrating independence. Liberalism is all about dependency, and the more men dependent on government, the better for the liberal media.

The media portrays dependency as attractive to women, but it’s not in the real world. Behave like the men in the media, and you will have lots of safe female friends, but no girlfriends or lovers. Any relationships will be short lived, ended with, “you’re really sweet, but I just don’t feel that way about you.” What’s worse, there’s no place to learn what really works with women. You keep doing what the media encourages, and you get the same results.

It’s extremely frustrating.

My name is John Alanis, and for 8 years I have taught all kinds of men how to find, attract, and keep the woman you really want. Better yet, I show men how to get women to approach you first for a date, no matter your looks, age or income by knowing how women really think about men, not what they “should think” according to the media bias.

Recently, I had enough of the nonsense spewed by the liberal media, and decided to finally release the truth about how women REALLY think in a low cost dating book any man can afford, regardless of political affiliation.

Who needs this? If you are a man who’d like to get a hot girlfriend, date lots of fun women, find that special one, save a dying relationship, or just get women to like you then this dating book is for you.

Here is what is revealed in this shocking expose:

  • Why the mindset of dependency encouraged by the liberal media actually kills attraction

  • Why women and men do NOT think alike, and why believing this liberal lie ruins your chances of attraction

  • What really turns on the female mind, and why this secret is politically incorrect, even terrifying to the liberal media

  • Why behaving in the manner encouraged by the media repels women, turning them off, causing them to disrespect you

  • How to attract the woman you really want using behavior that actually works in the real world, even you are currently a liberal yourself

…and much, much more. And, you also get access to the bonus audio, “How To Attract Women In An Anti-Male Society” While this audio is OFFENSIVE to liberals, it tells you step by step how to break the hold of media bias and do what really works to attract women.

Break the hold of the liberal media right now: don’t let others determine your results with women. Declare your independence from the liberal media, and take action that will attract the women you really desire. Click the orange buy button right now to invest in this amazing dating book for men, and you too can start choosing the outcomes with women YOU really want.

Oh, and if you don’t own a Kindle, no worries. Amazon will give you free Kindle reader when you click here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sv_kstore_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771

John, I love you so much, you're a great guy... but I'm NOT in love with you anymore!
By John McGraw
These words hurt worse than some big muscle bound dude breaking each bone in your body with an 16lbs sledge hammer. You do the "right" things, you support her, encourage her, bla, bla, blah and seemingly out of nowhere, the dreaded words of the tittle above slap you in the face while ripping out your heart. What makes it worse is you see in her face that it's true, she did/does love you but what we call romantic love or more appropriately called "Attraction" is gone never to return and all we are left with is broken pieces of our lives and selves while she is happy and "in love" or rather "Attraction" with some other guy that's like I used to be. How messed up, how unfair, somebody ought to do something about this, I deserve more, I am entitled to more, What the &*()?

I'll admit it, I was deep into "woe is me, everyone hates me mentality" after all I wasn't perfect but I was an well meaning, caring guy and thought I just deserved for things to magically work out somehow and be happy ever after. Kind of like rainbows, Unicorns and Hope and Change or some such nonsense but no one nowhere ever taught me about attraction until I stumbled upon an email newsletter opt in page from this cool guy in Austin that had it figured out and was living an life I couldn't really comprehend at the time.

I really wish I'd known of John Alanis years ago, when you read his works there are so many ah-ha moments and light bulbs going off it's quite something. Looking back at my past with Women, John's works act as an filter to view my past failures and triumphs in Attraction and to really understand why things work/ don't work in an easy to understand way.
John, as an businessman really believes in under promising and over delivering and has my respect and I will continue to follow him and his work.

I don't care where you are in life, 18 to 80, single, happy, miserable, in an good or bad relationship the understanding and USE of the Knowledge John teaches will be invaluable to you and to the ones you love so do yourself an favor, buy this under priced book right now, read it, enjoy the free bonus materials and sign up for his free email newsletter and I promise your life will never be the same again.

Skeptical now impressed.
By Alana L. Pratt
"I was skeptical. I'm an Intimacy Expert and I only bought it to see if the author was full of crap. Even though he seems to have a thing for blonds in bikinis (photos are sprinkled throughout the book apparently for your visual cortex's pleasure)... the more I read, the more pleasantly surprised I became that this guy gets what men do wrong that turns women off, regardless of their political affiliation. And while I choose to go far deeper to the heart and soul of the matter, he actually has some solutions I very much agree with. Well worth the read." Allana Pratt

Good and not so good........
By jack hooper
I've become fascinated with the whole area of dating science in the last few years and in that space of time I've absorbed a tonne of information via the various self styled gurus. So a lot of what John Alanis has to say, I've heard before and if you've read any of David de angelo, josh pellicer or carlos xuma's material, theres no need to buy this book. The dating science world is very incestuous, you'll have one guru recommending anothers material and vice versa, all in an attempt to weasel as much money out of vunerable men as possible. Its hard not to be cynical about the whole thing......But having said that there is some good information in this book and it comes at a very cheap price so if you can sort the wheat from the chaff its worth the $3. But like I said, only if you havent already delved into the back catalogue of those mentioned above.
I think John Alanis is right in that somewhere along the line, men need to be instructed in the science of dating as we're pretty clueless in general. Wheresas women seem to have a lot of different resources to tap into from a young age, men dont have anything of the like. We read football magazines when we're kids and health and fitness mags when we get a bit older. Whereas from a very young age girls have a lot of different magazines telling them all about relationships etc
Its not an even playing field and thats not good for men and women. JA makes some very good points about how the liberal media feed men an image of how they think they should be, men absorb this message and end up far removed from who they really are. Which works in hollywood movies but in reality goes down like a lead balloon.
And this is all good stuff. But I think JA shoots himself in the foot in that he repeats himself over and over but also he comes across like he has a chip on his shoulder and this book is more of a venting exercise than a genuine tool created to help other men. Plus theres way too much recommending of other books he's written which damages his credibility even further. Aswell as that he contradicts himself a fair bit. In one section he'll talk about not kow-towing to women(buying gifts, begging for dates, doing things like washing their car)but in another section he'll talk about how in order to keep a woman interested the man has to constantly arrange things to do and in general act like a dancing monkey.
This book has a few good points in it but mostly it comes across like a rant.

Theres a lot of these self styled dating gurus for men out there, but out of all of them I've found Josh pellicer to be the most genuine. Im not affiliated with Josh pellicer in any way but if you're trying to learn about all of this stuff I'd stick with his material and leave the rest to themselves.

From Publishers Weekly
It is the view of Evans, director of the Center for Advanced Feminist Studies at the University of Minnesota and author of Personal Politics , that "to understand the force of women's experience . . . we must adjust our vision so that we can see the world not only through the major male figures in the foreground but also through the eyes of female figures--a Puritan good wife, an African slave, an Iroquois matron, a westering woman, a female immigrant, a settlement house worker, a secretary." She advances to this end by melding the stories of representative, sometimes well-known, women into the larger sphere of American politics and public life. Richly diverse accounts exemplify the challenge and struggle that have defined and continue to alter the roles of women in our nation's development. In this respect Evans's useful exploration of the participatory nature of women's history in the United States differs from the majority of feminist literature.

From School Library Journal
YA-- A fascinating, readable volume that discusses the continual reshaping of the role of women in America from the 17th century to the 1980s. Evans' chapters roughly coincide with standard textbook organization of history (early settlers, Revolutionary era, 1845-1865, etc.), which makes the book useful to students of American history searching for another viewpoint. Unlike earlier histories, which only discuss women in the home, Evans shows the impact husbands, brothers, and sons had on the women's lives and thinking, and the effect of women's actions on men's politics. Although women's place in society remains unchanged in many basic ways, the intervening 300 years have seen great changes in the acceptance of women in public and political spheres. Evans makes these changes understandable to lay readers who may not yet have a sense of the totality of American history. No library should be without this title that offers such unique insight into women's roles and history from early settlers and native Americans to modern CEOs. --Dorcas Hand, Episcopal High School, Bellaire, TX

From Library Journal
In this synthesis, Evans reviews the evolution of work and family life with sensitivity to the fissures of class, national origin, region, occupation, marital status, sexual preference, and, especially, race. As in her earlier work, Evans spotlights the "public spaces"--reform, religious and educational organizations--that women created in order to achieve political and social objectives. Enriched by the fruitful scholarship of the last decade, this densely written book is a worthy execution of a difficult task. There are only a few comparable works: Glenda Riley's Inventing the American Woman (Harlan Davidson, 1986); Nancy Woloch's Women and the American Experience (Knopf, 1984); and Mary P. Ryan's most recent edition of Womanhood in America from Colonial Times to the Present ( Watts, 1979; 1983). Recommended.

A thorough and informative history of women in the U.S.
By A Customer
Evans' "Born for Liberty" is an excellent history of women in the U.S. The women's rights movements are often times portrayed as struggles of white middle-class women for white middle-class women. Evans includes the struggles and contributions of working-class women, black women, and immigrant women to the women's rights movements. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the struggle for equality and the role of women in shaping this country's history.
