What a nice surprise

I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system. The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done. I have decided to buy her a copy of her own.

A good introduction to 8051 family microcontrollers

8051... Isn't that obsolete?

The chip is, but the core is in hundreds of chips and more keep coming. This is a good introduction to the family and brings you up to speed. It has notably good reference appendices of the instruction set and special function registers. Program structure and design is covered for C and assembly. Some of the small chips in the family have only 1k of memory and for those applications assembly is a fit.

This book, a search on the net for a list of 8051 family chips and the data sheet for your specific chip, along with the free software that the suppliers now provide should get you going.

Pretty cool

This is a new reprint of this once rare book. It even contains the pen and ink drawings from the original Amazing Stories edition as well as numerous foreign and domestic film posters. There are, as another reviewer noted, numerous spelling & punctuation errors, basically something on almost every page, but they're minor, though the manuscript could benefit from another pass with a good editor. Philip J. Riley's "Nightmare series" is a great idea--keeping these old movie tie in novels alive. I collect novelizations and this is a wonderful addition to my collection.

Great read for fans of the movie!!!

As a big fan of the original film, this was a great item to have available since the original pulp story publication. There are the usual detractors such as multiple spelling and a few punctuation errors. I wish the books were edited with more accuracy to provide a better product to the fans of these original films as they are being published. Overall the film novel series has been very good, and I highly recommend all fans to buy them. Looking forward to future published titles.

WONDERFUL IDEA AND PRODUCT WITH JUST A FEW FLAWS

Here, in easily affordable reprint form, is the fabulous 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH novelization by noted sci-fi and mystery author Henry Slesar. Based on the famous screenplay and film from Columbia Pictures 1957 science fiction epic. It is one of my all-time sci-fi and Ray Harryhausen greats in which Ray accomplished some of his BEST animation effects. This book is a great idea and I greatly appreciate its publication. The only thing I was dissatisfied with is the fact that some of the ink line illustrations reproduced from the original Amazing Stories issue are partially missing. That is, for whatever reason, some are incomplete. Its not a big deal, but I find it to be somewhat distracting. The book also has the bonus of good background material on the making of the film and input from Mr. Slesar himself on how the novelization came to be written. Overall: Pleased with this item.

More of a dictionary than an encyclopedia, this one-volume paperback update to the first edition (LJ 4/15/86) comprises 600 entries, 90 percent of which are new or substantially revised to reflect recent developments and approaches in the social sciences, e.g., feminism, postmodernism, sociobiology, environmental and evolutionary economics, and cultural studies. Contributors, mostly scholars from the United Kingdom and the United States, are aiming at an audience of scholars and social scientists who need a handy desk reference for quick overviews of terms, concepts, movements, and individuals from disciplines outside or adjoining their own fields. The entries are of high quality in terms of content, but inevitably any one-volume work that attempts to cover all the social sciences will have gaps: for example, there's an entry on semantics but no entries for the equally important linguistic subfields of phonology and syntax. Readers needing in-depth treatment of topics will be better served by the multivolume encyclopedias that cover individual disciplines in the social sciences, the true heirs to the venerable Encyclopedia of Social Sciences (1930) and the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1968). Similar to the 1985 first edition, the second edition of the Social Science Encyclopedia attempts to provide broad and up-to-date coverage of all of the social sciences in a single volume. It contains more than 600 signed articles, ranging in length from a few paragraphs to a few pages, representing current theory, practice, and policy in such disciplines as anthropology, economics, education, feminism, geography, government and politics, linguistics, philosophy, and sociology. With such broad coverage, the encyclopedia does not go into great detail. Fortunately, every entry includes a bibliography for further reading. Like the first edition, the encyclopedia is written primarily for specialists in the field. It has a relatively high reading level and will be most useful for researchers and graduate students.

A comparison of the first and second editions indicates that the editors have taken into account the many changes that have occurred in the social sciences over the intervening decade. In a random sample of entries selected from both editions, only one-quarter of the text was found to be the same. Approximately 15 percent of the entries from the first edition were dropped, and more than one-half of all entries have been revised and updated. A further 25 percent of the entries in the second edition are completely new. Many of the articles contain recent findings and citations, some as recent as 1994. This work will replace the first edition and will continue to serve as an update to the old standard, the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. It will be a useful addition to any social sciences research collection.
