appreciate achievements of great minds

Analytic geometry is where the maths student first encounters the combining of traditional Euclidean geometry with algebra. A profound mix, though perhaps most students won't appreciate it as such. Boyer shows how, slowly, the necessary ideas in analytic geometry came together. He traces the first stirrings back to the classical era of ancient Greece and Rome. But the greatest step may well have been due to Rene Decartes and his laying down of the x and y grid in two dimensions. Plus, of course, analytic geometry was necessary for the development of calculus, with the concept of a slope.

You probably are already familiar with all of the maths that the book covers. What Boyer offers is an appreciation of the great minds that preceded up and made these achievements.

Well researched history of algebraicization of geometry

This Dover book, "History of Analytic Geometry" by Carl B. Boyer, is a very competent history of the way in which geometry made many transitions from the Euclidean geometry of lines, circles and conics to the algebraic reformulations by Fermat and Descartes, finally to the arithmetization of geometry which we now take for granted.

Although the treatment is excellent, it seems to me that the subject of this book is a relatively dry, light-weight part of mathematics from the modern point of view, unlike the much more satisfying history of calculus, "The History of the Calculus and Its Conceptual Development", by the same author. Perhaps the reason for this apparent shallowness of coordinate geometry is that it is now so totally accepted in modern life, for example in longitude and latitude for the Earth, X and Y coordinates for computer monitor pixels or printer dots, and for every graph we ever see during school education or working life. Therefore to appreciate this history by Boyer, one must try to imagine the mind-set of pure mathematicians from Euclid to Euler, who believed that numbers and magnitudes are fundamentally different. Even in Euler's relatively modern 1748 work, "Introductio in analysin infinitorum", numbers are referred to as "lines" (in Latin), and this idea persisted well into the 19th century.

Boyer points out on pages 92 and 267 that it was only with the Cantor-Dedekind axiom that the identification of numbers with the points on a line is made explicit, late in the 19th century. But the "real number line" is taught at a very early age in the schools now as if it were obvious. What has happened is that numbers have developed so as to "fill in the gaps" on the "real number line" with algebraic and transcendental numbers. We take for granted now that numbers include decimal expansions to any number of significant digits, even infinite, but this was not part of mathematical understanding until the 19th century. This book shows how geometry was gradually, and sometimes painfully, developed until the algebraic and numerical viewpoints prevailed.

Some of the points in this book which I have added marginal notes for are as follows.

* Pages 13-14. It was Plato who required geometry to be concerned only with ruler and compass, not Euclid.
* Pages 17-18. According to Proclus and Eutocius, it was Menaechmus who discovered the 3 kinds of conics about 350 BC.
* Page 24. It was Apollonius who gave the names to the ellipse, parabola and hyperbola.
* Page 46. It was Oresme, about 1350 AD, who first published graphs with Y as a function of X.
* Page 57. Originally, cubic and quartic equations were solved using the geometry of conics, but from about 1550 onwards, there were algebraic methods to achieve the same objective. Stevin, about 1600 AD, said that anything which can be achieved with geometry can be done in arithmetic.
* Page 111. Wallis, about 1650, introduced negative abscissas (X coordinates), but "the significance of this step was not appreciated by his contemporaries".
* Page 133. Jean Bernoulli in 1692 was the first to use the term "Cartesian geometry" for geometry based on a coordinate system.
* Page 169. Clairaut in 1731 defined the distance between two points in 2 and 3 dimensional coordinate space as the square root of the sum of the squares of the coordinate differences.

Throughout the book, Boyer discusses the fundamental question of what distinguishes "analytic geometry" from the earlier geometry, whether it is the use of coordinates, the application of algebra or arithmetic to geometry, or the application of geometry to algebra or arithmetic, or maybe something else. Perhaps this is the weak point of the book. It is not really clearly stated what "analytic geometry" means. So it's difficult to know when it started, and which topics belong to calculus rather than analytic geometry.

Poor Quality Reporduction

Two stars because the source material is great stuff, bit the reproduction is bad. I have a vintage copy of this, and had ordered the reprint as a gift for someone because the old ones can be a little dusty or worn. However, I ended up returning it because a few of my favorite charts were totally illegible.

About a year ago I was searching the internet for different cooking books. I happened to stumble on Belle Lowe's Experimental Cookery Book as an eBook version. I had liked it so much I was hoping to find it on the internet. My search seemed fruitless.

The eBook version depicted text, charts,graphs, formulas, pictures, table of contents, and a big index.

This last August I found Belle Lowe's Experimental Cookery Book on Amazon.com. I was so excited that they had it, and that it was a new version, even though it was a paperback. After receiving the book I was markedly disappointed with the book. It had no ( table of contents, index, tables, charts, formulas, graphs,pictures). I immediately shipped the book back to Amazon.com, after they emailed me a shipping label.

I found a few second hand-2nd Edition hardcover 1937 version. I ordered my book through Amazon.com from the seller "youzdbooks" The book was rated "Used-Good". I am thoroughly satisfied As stated the Spine of the book is tight, Ex-libris stamp on the inside cover. The pages are solid and crisp with a slight tan with some occasional easily erasable pencil underlings. The Red covers are solid straight and clean showing minot shelf ware. This book has all of the text, charts, graphs, formulas, pictures, table of contents and index. I find this book a jewel.

Would definitely buy from this seller again!

I am an experienced, full time sound engineer who was looking for a book to further my knowledge and help with those little tricks and suggestions that improve my mix and the way I work.

Well boy DID I FIND THAT BOOK. It's perfect for anyone who thinks they know everything, because you're sure to find something that you didn't know.

I recently showed this book to a colleage of mine who's toured doing FOH or monitors with Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Phil Collins, the impressive list goes on and on. Anyway... I ended up loaning him the book to head because he was so impresesed by it. He knew that Jim was good, but after a quick glance over the book, he was amazed on how educated the man is.

SERIOUSLY, it's a great book.

Great book for any audio engineer, from someone just starting in the business to the seasoned engineer. Good reading for musicians as well. The book is similar in style to Harvey Penicks Little Red Book. Short useful pieces, the kind of book you can pick up and read for 10 minutes, and you will have learned something.Good book to keep on the gig!A nice blend of humour mixed in with the knowledge and experience from the bar band circuit in Canada to touring with Van Halen,Aerosmith and many others.I really enjoyed this book!

Read anything you can by Dominican Priest, Fr. Jacques Jomier. There is no better introduction to the Qur'an in English. The Bible and the Qur'an is the best book. The results are surprising, deeply disturbing and yet offer hope infinite. For any Christian who dismisses the significance of Mary!!!!!!! The truth of what Fr. Jomier reports to us is staggering yet most Catholic priests are probably ignorant. The entrance to the bridge we are accessed to is in fact much, much more narrow than the proverbial 'eye of a needle'. This book is for Christians and others seeking to understand the Qur'an and its people. It is written from the point of view of creating credibiliy with Islam in the hope of honest and sincere dialog. Compare this point of view with the Muslims who fear dialog because it may lead them more completely to Jesus and the truth.

Some fluff, but mostly good technical information about the legal and tax aspects of running most kinds of businesses.

This is coming from someone who wants to start a blog/online/home business. Let's start with the positive: lots of extra and detailed tax write off information for sole proprietors. I'm using this book mainly to reduce my taxes since I have a relatively high income with high income taxes and this book seems to contain the most detail and various ways I can deduct my taxes. I'm using this book more as a reference than a read thru - which brings me to the negative side of this book . . . it's hard to read chapter by chapter. I feel like there's a lot of fluff, but with a few really good legal/tax points throughout the book.

I don't own or plan to own a brick and mortar business - so a lot of the advice is not for me. I want to keep my operations really small, strictly staying online, collecting no sales tax, and not employing anyone (my main motive in business is to get tax-deductions for following my true passions - something I would do for free and in fact spend and lose money on). If my passions are profitable in some way, then HOORAY! But if not, at least I got tax-deductions doing something I enjoyed. Therefore, I still meet the criteria for my intention to make a profit. But as we all know, profit is not guaranteed in any and every business.

The getting started chapter goes over business types (service, retail, manufacturing), business success info and advice, business location (mall, home, rural, industrial, zoning), financing (business loan types, grants, raising capital), legal structures (sole proprietor, LLC, etc.), legality of business names and trademarks, licensing permits, and liability insurance. I never plan to go in debt for business unless expansion would guarantee massive profits - in this case taking a loan is justifiable. I want to keep my liabilities naturally low and stay smart about risk to avoid buying insurance and avoid any catastrophes. Besides info about business names and trademarks, this chapter was a wash for me.

I hate the bookkeeping chapter because it's too complicated. I was hoping for a simple and easy solution to keep track of everything. But there are a few useful tips and pointers if you're willing to dig through all the words.

The growing up chapter explained the details in hiring employees and solidified my opinion that hiring employees is never worth it and if I were to ever hire, I would use contractors.

The taxes chapter is the main reason I bought the book and it didn't disappoint - the gold is here. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for you?), I just found out he wrote a different book that only covers tax deductions - had I known this, I would have bought that book. I'll probably check it out at the library. I advise you to look into it too if you're like me. There are so many deductions that are explained, I'm glad that I bought this book so that I don't have to hire someone to tell me and do my taxes for me. LOTS of tax intricacies I never even guessed existed were explained. Now I can and will deduct things confidently.

The home business chapter is my second favorite since it also has tax-specific advice about home business.

The only things in the last chapters which caught my eye are the legal aspects of publishing and trademarks. Also talks about websites and the internet.

This is a great book for people who already have a pretty solid traditional small business and hope to improve upon it by expanding their business through expanding sales and hiring employees. It does have good nuggets for sole proprietors as well. Taxes are a headache, reading this book is a headache - but that is mostly because taxes are a complicated issue for most laypeople trying to start a business.

Straight forward, easy to understand, a must have for starting your own business

Starting my own business, and being a first timer, I needed clear, understandable information on how to establish and setup my business. This book is by far the easiest to follow. The author interjects some great insight and humor throughout. It's down-to-earth, easy to understand and follow. Do yourself a favor and get this book - you won't be disappointed.

Very pleased with our purchase

We purchased this book for my husband's friend and co-worker that is a welder who is interested in possibly branching out and starting his own business. The reviews appeared to be mixed on this book so I was a little hesitant to place the order, but per the description the book seemed to contain everything that we were looking for. Once the book arrived I flipped through and read a few snippets and to me, someone who is not a welder but does have a great deal of background in small business, the book seemed to give sound advice. We gave this to my husband's friend a few days ago and he was thrilled with the gift. If you know of any welders that are interested in learning more about having their own business opportunity then I would say this book is the perfect gift for them. We are very pleased with our purchase.
