This is one of the most important medal books of the decade. Finally, we have an authoritative and complete book on Soviet orders and medals............This book will absolutely be the "bible" for collectors of Soviet orders and medals, and that is only to be expected. However, it will also open up the field to new collectors as well by giving them information not previousely available and by reducing - if not eliminating - the risk of getting stung by bad material. Even if you don't collect Soviet material, I strongly recommend adding this book to your library if for no other reason than because it is so well done, so impressive, and so interesting! -- The Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America, August-September, 1997

The "reference" on Soviet Faleristics

The fall of the Iron Curtain allowed the collectors of orders and decorations to buy Soviet "signs of honour" at very reasonable prices (many of us remember what the price of a Red Banner order was in the '70s!). The main problem to collectors was where to obtain informations. Most books were (and still are) written in Russian and the linguistical barrier was another thick "curtain"; more, the defect of Soviet reference books was that any topic was "filtered" through ideology, and who wasn't provided with a big sense of humour wouldn't appreciate them fully. I am one of the lucky ones having no problems at all into reading russian but, when this book was published, I've looked for a copy immediately. All my expectations were fulfilled: this "guide" shows that the authors have a strong background, both historical and social, about the USSR, other than the enthusiasm of the true collectors. After having read it thoroughly, I can say that no "trade secret" was kept, and any useful details and informations were given. Each year, many books on orders and decorations are published, but most are just trying to fill gaps in this branch of the social studies (yes, I can honestly say that phaleristic could really be an aspect of sociology). This book actually fills a gap. It is interesting to know that some collectors from the former Soviet Union already appreciate this work highly. The details about fakes are very interesting, but like any reference about the "problem #1 of collecting", it is outdated in the same moment it comes out of the press. I think that "The Comprehensive Guide", in the future, will be a collection piece itself.

Simply the best.

This is the best book on medal collecting out there. Period. Combining detailed, color pictures, specific award criteria and a comprehensive thoroughness it easily outdistances any other medal collectors guide in *any* field (Third Reich, British, American, Imperial German (would that there was one even half as good as this)). Only Previtera's "The Iron Time" can match it in quality and "The Iron Time" is limited to investigating one award (The Prussian Iron Cross) so it has a very narrow focus despite it being a five star book in it's own right. Schmitt & McDaniel's book has set a very high bar that any "comprehensive" medal collector's book issued in the future will have a struggle to match. Not only that the publication of this book helps legitamize the collecting of the "evil empire's" awards unlike any other publication from the past. Well worth it's price.

The only one you'll need

If you have any interest in collecting Soviet orders and medals, this is the only book you'll need. Every other reference on this subject I've read isn't even close to this one in detail, information, history and variants. From the earliest days of the revolution to the fall of the USSR, this book has detailed info for them all.

My only complaint is that it's a bit outdated when describing known fakes. For example, for the Order of Nevsky (probably the one medal who's value is increasing the fastest) the author lists no known fakes of sufficient quality to consider. That may have been true then, but not today. I've seen fake Nevsky's that are completely indistinguishable from the real thing, even when compared side-by-side. If it's worth enough money, someone will fake it.

Thomas E. Benjamin has recently retired as Chair of the Department of Music Theory at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. Excellent Source

This is an excellent resource for those who are trying to learn about the Atlantic World. This is a collection of well-edited seminal articles about the Atlantic historical exchanges. The book is inexpensive and readily available--a better alternative than looking for the articles yourself. Probably the best feature is the editing work itself. Most of the articles here have been recognized, highly scholarly pieces, which originally appealed to specialists. However, in the book they have been edited to reach out to the general audience to which is meant, without losing their scholarly significance.

This is the debut novel by S.W. Andersen. Having been raised by her mother, a strong female character in her own right, she has always been attracted to stories that depicted independent, capable, determined women. She has spent a large part of her life around horses and rodeos and has always had an affinity for the cowgirl lifestyle. Her love of the mountains and westerns were the driving forces behind her first novel. When she isn’t working, she enjoys outdoor activities and traveling with her wife, Dianna. A Riveting Read!

Somewhere Between Love and Justice is the debut novel by S.W. Anderson. It is described by the author as a “lesbian western,” set in the 1890s. There is lots of action, suspense, and yes, sex.
Sarah Sawyer is the hero in this story-- if you can call a young woman with murder on her mind a “hero.” She is on a mission to avenge the brutal murder of her parents ten years ago, by tracking down the remaining members of the notorious O’Shea gang, and ridding society of their lowly existence. There’s a bit of a love triangle between Sarah and Jessie, who’s a sheriff’s marshall, and the beautiful Jo, a saloon owner. It’s Jo who is really the love of Sarah’s life… if only Sarah could let herself the gift of that love, as she believes that she is not a good person, and is basically “damaged goods.” The one criticism I have of this story is that Sarah’s low self esteem and sense of unworthiness gets tiresome when repeated in chapter after chapter. Other than that, Somewhere Between Love and Justice is riveting, descriptive, and thrilling. There are a couple of interesting plot twists towards the end of the story, which reveal how Sarah’s, Jessie’s and Jo’s pasts are shockingly intertwined. I hope to read more of Ms. Anderson’s work in the future!

You HAVE TO read this book!!!!!

First off let me say...WOW!!! This book was really, really, really good. I'm not one for time pieces because same sex romance have to always be strictly hidden and always make me cringe because something bad is going to happen because of it but in this one, it takes place in the wild west with same sex romance a norm...and it made it all the better. This book has everything a reader could want, from romance, to angst, to true love, and fate. You have to read this book...there is no way to be disappointed in it

The book takes you on this western journey filled with horses, cowgirl boots, gunslinging Stetson wearing beautiful hardcore cowgirls of the west. I loved how Sarah is portrayed as perfection personified yet you see cracks and flaws that make her human. Her passion and her willingness to risk her heart for Jo makes you have faith in love. May we all find a lover like Jo and someone worth loving like Sarah in our lives. Absolutely a riveting read. UNPUTDOWNABLE.

Suspenseful

Grant Shaw is the oldest of the Shaw brothers and the last bachelor standing among them. While he's glad that his brothers have found happiness, the Bastard Axe is happy with his one and done life...until he meets Bekah.
Bekah Corbin is looking to give up her v-card after having graduated and before she starts an internship her insistent father has arranged. She never expects to find someone like Grant. Nor does she expect to see him again after their weekend-stand.
Surprise abounds when she finds out that Grant is her new boss and he finds that he's willing to break all his rules for her. Add in a stalkery suitor, some corporate dirty dealing, and a greedy father, and you're In for a suspenseful, hot read.

Couldn't put it down

Wow!!! This book was soooooo good that I couldn't put it down until I finished it. DO NOT start this book late in the day or you will be up to the early morning hours to finish. The book was suspenseful, emotional and a love story with some sex and a little violence added into the mix. This book far exceeded my expectations.

I will never submit! Unless he's super hot...

Before you read my review, take a moment and read the blurb... Go ahead... Now buckle up because I'm about to rant...

Sounds awesome, right? Pretty standard premise--bad boy, good girl. I knew there would likely be insta-love, some mafia violence. I'd hoped there would be some dominating sexy good times. What I got was a hot mess of contradictions, a FMC that made no sense, cringe-worthy dialogue, and a MMC whose only interesting quality was the size of his...

Let's start with the beginning, shall we? "My family was a pretty traditional working class family." Okay, I've painted a picture. Except on the next page, Jodie talks about all the nice cars, the nice things they owned, all the money they had. You know, because her father owned a string of nightclubs.

Jodie witnesses Dante doing unspeakable violence to her family, and then he kidnaps her. She's super angry about this. You can tell because she says, "You bastards. You killed them, you bastards." See? She means that.

So Dante is wondering if she really could be clueless about her own father's business dealings. He decides it's possible, then later says there's no way she couldn't have known, and then says it's possible again.

So Jodie wakes up in a strange place with a knot on her head after witnessing her entire family being brutally murdered. She cries a little and screams a lot. Dante decides enough is enough and tells her, "You'll submit. You'll learn." Her reaction? She's mad, sure, but she can't help but notice how hot he is and she's just dripping for him. Seriously?

There's this huge deal made about how he lives in an apartment, so he can't take chances and has to tie her up and gag her whenever he leaves. He does this the first time...and the third. Second time? Guess that wasn't a big deal...

He makes her breakfast in bed, but she jumps up and scurries to the bathroom to go pee first. Then they try to have this cute little banter about how he f'ed her so hard she can't walk. "Just because I haven't walked yet doesn't mean I can't." "I think you're unable to walk because I dominated you last night." Hello! She already got up!

Enough about inconsistencies... One of my pet peeves is telling me every little thought as though I can't draw my own conclusions. Perfect example--there's a scene where he gives her some wine. She takes a sip and then starts guzzling it. He tells her to slow down, his face goes soft, and then he says, "There will be more wine." I actually read this scene to my nine year old son and asked him what inferences he could draw. He said, "She likes the wine. She's scared she won't get more." Good job, kiddo. I do not need, "I nodded, feeling silly. He saw right through me. I wanted to drink it fast because I didn't know if there would be another glass after that. I couldn't help myself." And the whole book is like this...

Then the dialogue...
"You do as I say."
"Why"
"Because you want to... That's why I'm going to make you submit."
"How?"
"Get down on your knees... Good girl."

So, the book is about a girl who witnesses brutality but decides her kidnapper is too sexy to deny. He says, "Submit." She tells him that she never will but after a couple days of zero conversation, she decides he's just too hot. He decides that he loves her and is willing to give up everything for her because she's so pretty. The end...which is, incidentally, at the 29% mark. Let's not forget that.

ITALIAN HITMAN TAKES IRISH MOB PRINCESS

BB Hamel is the Queen of the BAD BOY Romance and I have been reading her work for quite some time now. I will continue to read her work and recommend it because she never lets me down. I know that when I pick up one of her books I will not put it down. “Bend” is no different. You are grabbed at the beginning of the book and pulled into a life of hostages, mafia, murder, mayhem, bad boys, and steamy hot, dirty sex!!! What more could you want? I found myself at times feeling as though I was part of this story and actually there. But then it could be wishful thinking on my part for a hot alpha bad boy of my own. This book is not for the weak, and you must have an open mind because of the dark story being told here. This book is recommended for mature readers 18 years of age or older.

Dante is a hitman for the Italian mafia which is the enemy of the Irish mob. Dante, his boss and some guys from the family have just killed a boss for Irish mob and his entire family except for his daughter Jody. Dante’s boss gives Jody to him and tells him to get her trained and ready to sell and he has three weeks to do this. He must have her obeying his ever command. Then they take her prisoner and she has no idea what is to become of her now. All she knows is that she is being held in an apartment on either the second or third floor, and her room has been converted to a jail cell. Then her captor comes in after she wakes up and she is terrified of him, but is pissed at the way her body is reacting to this dominate alpha male that is holding her hostage. Now she must find a way out, or does she? Will Jody and Dante quit fighting their attraction to each other?

It Was Good.

It was a good, quick read. My only complaint is how the slaughter if her family didn't really seem to bother her. I mean, her head should've been way more scrambled after that for a good while. But I get you can't always dwell and go into great detail with emotion with a fast paced read. Other than that, it was a good love story. :) Oh, and I loved the extra story at the end, Bastard's Baby, super good.
