Good comprehensive review, but also a false sense of security

I graduated as an EE 7 years ago and decided to set aside most of my life for 4 months and focus on studying. This book was my primary text, along with a college circuits, devices, EM fields, and machines book. I did most of the practice problems and found them helpful. Overall, this book helped me navigate the huge field of electrical engineering and get my head back in the game.

A few disappointments and things that I learned after taking the PE (yesterday) that I wish I would have known:
1. Be sure to verify the edition of Codes the PE exam uses. Unfortunately, Camara's book lead me to believe that the NEC 2008 would be the focus, when in fact all the questions were based on the latest version, NEC 2011.
2. This book glosses over some very important topics-- especially power flow studies, fault studies, metering, relaying, zero sequence currents, harmonics and their effect on the power system. I feel like the book prepared me for the basics but the difficult interactions between concepts was not explored (like how does voltage affect power factor, how does a fault on one phase affect current in the neutral, how do changes in motor torque affect power factor....etc). These difficult interactions are the focus of PE questions.
3. There is no guidance on other materials, recommendations to study. I had an extremely difficult time finding help on some of the power-related topics and a bibliography of recommended books would be great. PPI's web forum is not helpful and I could not find any great online place to chat and prepare for the test. At the time, I thought this book was all I needed, but it is essential to study from other books and resources to pass the PE!
4. The companion PE Sample Power Exams asks pretty straight forward questions. Compared to the sample exam published by the NCEES, the PPI version seems easy. NCEES has some difficult questions that are tricky because of how they are worded or presented. The PPI questions tested the same topics, but presented it in a much more accessible and easy to understand format.
5. This book focuses heavily on the basics. This is great to get into the material after being out of school for awhile, however, it gives the impression that this will be a big component of the PE exam.
6. This book states that engineering economics "to date" haven't been on the PE exam but are valid questions. Let me tell you-- you better study these!

Overall, great book to have as part of your overall preparation, but don't be fooled into thinking this is all you need.

Great Reference Book, Poor Study Guide...

This is a great hardcover reference book but just that, a reference book and not a study guide. I used it to work the problems for the PE exam and was able to luckily pass the first time I took it - but I put in about a 3 month studying effort. At first, I started by going through the big reference book and then quickly learned that I would never get through that book. What is most important for studying for the PE is to practice doing problems!!! I had this big reference book, the workbook and the NCEES sample test guide as my three study resources. By far the most important of these was the NCEES sample test guide. This is where you need to start folks...because this gives you a great flavor for the test, how it is written and what types of problems you will be presented with. Three of the problems were exactly the same as in the book (same answers too, the whole nine yards). So, get these three books, start by going through the NCEES sample test guide first and taking the test and then solving the problems. Use the reference guide when you get stumped or when you need to go back and learn some more detail in order to be able to solve the problems.

Some of the folks who have been out of the game for awhile chose to do a refresher course from testmasters dot com. All of the folks who have taken this course have passed prior to taking the exam...I did not take the course but just wanted to offer that up to my fellow electrical engineers in case they feel they need a course.

Make sure you manage your time on the test as well! Go through first pass and hit all the easy ones you know you can get in a minute or two...circle the ones you think you can get if you think about it more....guess on the ones you have no idea on and just move on. Make sure you kill it in the morning session...because the afternoon session will be brutal.

Good Luck on the Test! Remember, I know a lot of engineers who haven't passed this test until the third or fourth go around. Do not be ashamed or embarrassed - sometimes you just have to wait until the questions are stacked in favor of your strengths.

A must have reference book for the PE exam

Took the test 6 weeks ago. This book was essential. There were some redundant content and some content that could have used further explanations (like the effects harmonics have on a system), but for the most part this book provided a lot of good info for review before and during the test. Also, if taking the test you will need the latest copy of the NEC (several questions that require specific values from the code) and Power System Analysis by John Grainger (there is at least one or two questions that come from that text). Other topics that were on the test not covered by this book were Electric rate and demand questions as well as harmonics.

BRILLIANTLY CRAFTED! Especially for beginner cabaret singers.

From the very first few pages, it seemed that this book was geared to making a career on cruise ships, and personally I'm not interested in that.
As I read on, I realized that (at least the first few chapters so far) are wonderful guides for beginner cabaret singers.
It's also a comforting refresher guide for the working cabaret artist, recapping the steps one takes to transition into the world of cabaret!

Cabaret Secrets has been absolutely instrumental in helping us create our headliner show

After working as a production singer and orchestra guitarist for cruise lines, we had seen every headliner act that played our vessels, including Gary, and we were inspired to create our own act. The first thing we did was buy his book Cabaret Secrets. His book is so thorough, so candid, so incredibly informative and helpful, and a fun read as well. Gary's advice and insight on how to create your own show is second to none. After reading it, we began to create our own show and write the arrangements for our set list. Recently we were on a contract as a production singer and orchestra guitarist for a major cruise line and, taking Gary's advice from his book, we decided to use the opportunity to get our show in front of an audience and perform it as much as we could while on the ship. It was such a hit with the passengers the cruise director asked us to perform it every week!

We reached out to Gary who gave us fantastic advice on how to edit our reel, how to present our show to agencies, etc. He has been so incredibly helpful and a huge source of support and encouragement for us. Little did we know that soon after buying Gary's book we'd have a hit show of our own, and a slick press kit too, all thanks to his advice.

About the Author

Michael D. Reiter, Ph.D., LMFT, is Professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences at Nova Southeastern University. He received a dual master’s degree (Master of Education and Educational Specialist) in Counselor Education with sub-specializations in Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling at the University of Florida, and a doctorate in Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University. Michael is a Clinical Fellow and an Approved Supervisor from the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. He has written extensively, and presented nationally and internationally on various aspect of solution-focused brief therapy. Fantastic and Informative

As a practicing Therapist I have found this text to be one of the most useful in my collection. I am always looking into ways to become a better counselor and learning from real cases across multiple perspectives is essential.

Dr Reiter writes very clearly and it makes it enjoyable for me to sit down, read a couple of chapters and learn new things.

Fantastic Resource with a Pushy Writing Style

This book is full of helpful information about colloidal silver from how it works to instructions for making it yourself. As others have mentioned, the writing style is a bit aggressive in certain section and can come across in a pushy salesman sort of way.

I would also prefer to see more links to outside resources. I found myself researching some topics after I put down the book and more links would have been nice.

Overall, the amount of information in this book has bumped it up to 5 stars. Highly recommended!

Ok book if you don't know anything

If you want to find out the basics this book is Ok and has good information. If you plan on making high quality silver for other people you will need a lot more technical information. If you are a survivalist/preper this is a good handbook and would be a good addition to your survival supplies along with a basic silver generator and a way to distil water. The book title should be "Basic Knowledge You Need To Know About Colloidal Silver". It is not an everything book which is why I only gave it 2 stars. If it had the other title I would give it 3 stars.

Highly recommended - easy read, interesting and informative

While there are a lot of books for kids about bunnies, Nancy Garhan Attebury's biography of Gloria Steinem - Gloria Steinem Champion of Women's Rights - opens with a bunny of the Playboy variety.

"Gloria Steinem pulled on her thin black tights, scratchy orange costume with the fluffy bunny tail, matching shoes and bunny ears..." is one of the best first lines I have ever read. It is certain to draw in the author's intended audience.

The biography of the most renowned American feminist takes us deep inside Steinem's private life and personal battles. From being mother to her own mom to dealing with abortion and later in life, cancer, the author gives us a feel for the person of Gloria Steinem, not the legend of the outspoken siren of women's rights. By book's end, the reader knows and respects Steinem, whether they agree with her beliefs or not.

Though authors have little to do with the book design, I also want to mention this book is very well formatted. It is peppered with interesting historical and recent photos. The page design is very attractive to the eye and the text is nicely laid out and easy to read - not too crowded like many biographies for kids. The author included lots of interesting related sidebars that are set off in bordered shaded areas on the pages throughout the book. - Robin Koontz, author/illustrator

Great assortment of Christmas songs!

I really enjoy the songs in this book. They are not overly complicated, but are definitely not advanced. I'd say this is perfect for a middle level player. I like that there are a variety of classics as well as newer Christmas songs as well. The book also has guitar chords in case you want to have a little duet.

Creative without being too complex

This collection of Christmas songs and carols has been just the right thing for me. The arrangements are a meduim level which is perfect. They are upbeat and arranged with creativity without being too complex for an intermediate player. I even bought one for my grown daughter who is more advanced than myself, and she likes it. Now we have a familiar book to play out of when we visit each other.

About the Author

Henry Garner

Henry Garner is a graduate from the University of Oxford and an experienced developer, CTO, and coach. He started his technical career at Britain's largest telecoms provider, BT, working with a traditional data warehouse infrastructure. As a part of a small team for 3 years, he built sophisticated data models to derive insight from raw data and use web applications to present the results. These applications were used internally by senior executives and operatives to track both business and systems performance. He then went on to co-found Likely, a social media analytics start-up. As the CTO, he set the technical direction, leading to the introduction of an event-based append-only data pipeline modeled after the Lambda architecture. He adopted Clojure in 2011 and led a hybrid team of programmers and data scientists, building content recommendation engines based on collaborative filtering and clustering techniques. He developed a syllabus and copresented a series of evening classes from Likely's offices for professional developers who wanted to learn Clojure. Henry now works with growing businesses, consulting in both a development and technical leadership capacity. He presents regularly at seminars and Clojure meetups in and around London.
