About the Author

Michael A. Smith has been involved in hockey for over 40 years as a player, coach and general manager of the New York Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Blackhawks and Team USA. He was an adviser for the National Hockey League and has traveled extensively as a lecturer and studied European training methods in Russia and Sweden. The author of six books on hockey, he lives in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

Like Being At The Movies

Clear, concise, readable, coherent, and beautifully presented. Not a single word of nonsense anywhere. All totally straight-forward and user-friendly.

Keeping things simple is often great advice, and this book follows that philosophy exactly: it sticks to the tried and tested, and to the soundest fundamentals. (And there's never a day when the fundamentals are not required IN ABUNDANCE. In fact, most mistakes come down to breakdowns, or a lack of understanding, of the very basics. In other words, to play hockey well, you don't have to make it complicated.)

The book's key innovation is its step-by-step diagrams. They show how a play, a situation - be it defensive or attacking - evolves. This is done over several drawing; up to eight in some instances. (A single drawing just freezes a moment in time. Then you're left wondering, WHAT NOW? Not here. The diagrams function as a sort of picture show, letting you see what's next. Great stuff.)

Overall, an excellent resource, not only for players and coaches, but for goalies and fans too.

Highly recommended.

excellent, informative, explains competition well

After reading about 1/3rd of the book: well-written overview of competition in the airline industry with a lot of good detail, for example on airline customer loyalty strategies like frequent flyer programs, agency discounts, corporate discounts. Explains the economic theory in context. My only complaint is that a lot of charts with mind-numbing numbers in them would be more usefully presented as graphs rather than numeric tables.

About the Author
Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber and Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for two consecutive years for his last published collections of poetry, Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998). He was Poet Laureate from 1984, and in 1998 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

Fantastic

I was thrilled when I got this copy of The Iron Man from my husband. I've always loved the movie The Iron Giant, and have it almost memorized in its entirety! I never knew that it was based on a book, nor that it was a book written by Ted Hughes!

I shamefully admit that this was my first Ted Hughes book, and although I enjoyed it, it was close to nothing like the movie. That put me off for many reasons, but the biggest being that I was reading it with the movie playing in my head, which was probably my mistake.

The Iron Man was more of a victim-turned-hero in this book than he was made to in the movie, and the fighting scene at the end against the big black dragon from space was insanely brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the cleverness behind it.

I would recommend to all who decide to read this book and have watched the film adaptation beforehand to think of it as completely independent from the movie. Otherwise, you will find yourself disappointed, as did I.

great kids book

i feel like a lot of kids writers these days are kids writers because they're not good enough writers to write for adults. a lot of the art of writing is just plain absent from most children's books. ted hughes' writing is artful - he is a true craftsman with words. this story gets a little crazy, but it is so well written and so much fun to read. my 7 year old read it about 5 times in a row when we got it and made me read it, too. just fyi - the movie "the iron giant" is very, very loosely based on this book. this story is nothing like that movie.

This was my favourite book as a kid, and the book I learned to read from. My mother read it to me over & over until I knew it off by heart. Now, I'm buying it for my son.
