So Completely Thrilled

This is a fantastic book with lots of great pictures(many full page). Of course like almost all orientalist art most of the pictures are not accurate representations of the peoples activities but the book is great for studying fashion, jewelry and architecture of that time in the Middle East(mainly late 1800's and early 1900's). The price for this book is phenomenally low for the quality of book you get. There are so many beautiful pictures I haven't even gotten to the text yet.

Wonderful little book

I have ALWAYS loved Orientalist paintings and this book is a treat. Its production values are superb and Thornton does a great job in selection and explanation of the important paintings. The thick, glossy pages bring the painting to life, while the useful glosses provide context and rich detail. My only complaint is the size of the book: it really is a TINY book size for paintings. That has probably allowed the cost to remain low, but honestly, I would pay another $ 10/15 if it meant the book would be bigger, and I can see the detail of the paintings more clearly and vibrantly.

Overall, highly recommended!

Although the size of this book is a bit bigger than a regular paperback, it has far more paintings of orientalist style of women than any other book i've seen; the reproductions are excellent and the smaller size (smaller than a regular art book) does not diminise the value. the organization by theme is nice too. this is essential for anyone interested in orientalist art or any artist who likes drawing the female form.

About the Author
Greg Seager is the Chief Executive Officer for the Christian Health Service Corps, an interdenominational, exclusively medical, long-term missionary sending organization. He also serves as a founding board member for the Center for the Study of Health in Missions. Greg did his undergraduate nursing work at the University of New York Suny and Florida Atlantic University. He did his Graduate work in nursing and healthcare leadership at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Greg and his wife Candi both have extensive backgrounds in global health programming. From 2004 to 2006 they served as co-director of Mercy Ships Strategic Health Initiatives, the department that designed, monitored, and evaluated Mercy Ships long and short-term global health initiatives. Greg and Candi have worked for more than a decade personally and professionally to develop patient safety programs for global health, and program models that would facilitate long-term development programs. Prior to serving with Mercy Ships Greg and Candi worked with a Miami based relief and development organization overseeing their global

Excellent book about medical missions in underdeveloped countries

This is an excellent book, and I think it should be read by every healthcare worker who participates in medical missions in underdeveloped countries. It is beneficial for anyone working with medical missions, either religiously affiliated or a mission that has no religious affiliation.

I have participated in many medical missions in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Primum non nocere (first, do no harm) is something that is often ignored. With an altruistic desire to alleviate suffering in underdeveloped countries, physicians and nurses sometime ignore that there are many ways that people can be harmed by delivering healthcare in a country without being fully aware of potential negative ramifications. I have seen physicians who have with the best of intensions practiced medicine in developing countries and done things that are beyond their area of expertise, sometimes with disastrous results. In many cases, medical mission teams wrongly assume that there are no healthcare options for patients in areas where the medical mission is delivering healthcare; whereas, there actually is healthcare available. North American physicians and nurses are also often unfamiliar with prevalent healthcare problems in the area where they are practicing on a short-term mission.

Here are some of the things that the book talks about that I found particularly helpful:

* Medial missions should not emphasize the number of patients seen rather than the quality of care given. Defining success by quantity of patients seen, not the quality of the care given, will not produce lasting beneficial results.
* It is absolutely essential to work with the healthcare delivery system in place in the country.
* Don't be patronizing to patients that you are delivering care to.
* It is essential to understand how cultural beliefs and practices affect how healthcare is delivered.
* Resource-poor area medical practice is very different than practicing in a high-resource area. It is important to take this into consideration. Physicians and nurses often fail to take this into consideration, and this limits their effectiveness.
* It is difficult providing healthcare in a different language and in a different culture. If you don't speak the language or know the culture, this can be a tremendous source of miscommunication and harm. At the least, excellent translation is essential.
* There can be a false belief that no healthcare exists in the area where medical missions are planning to work.
* It is absolutely essential to work with the healthcare delivery system in place in the country
* "No one wants to go to a local doctor when they can go to a gringo doctor. Everyone thinks gringo doctors are better." This is a sentiment that I have encountered before. It is essential to work with, not in competition with local healthcare providers. Short-term health programs can adversely affect local healthcare providers by hurting them financially and subverting their authority in the community. People don't want to pay for healthcare when they can get free healthcare. Short-term medical missions should work to support, not to harm, local healthcare system. There are excellent ideas in the book as to how to work with local healthcare providers rather than against them. If you don't have a good relationship with local healthcare providers, there is little hope of your project being beneficial.
* Providing relief in situations that call for development impedes development and in that way can cause harm.
* It is important to determine who the stakeholders in the community are and to work with them. He stresses the importance of local ownership and bottom up planning.
* A good way for short-term missions to be effective is to launch or assist health program that will be continued by local community or local healthcare workers.
* Provide a copy of medical records to local healthcare workers if at all possible.
* Practice only within ones scope of practice - don't do things you don't do at home.
* Pay close attention to medications given to patients. Don't give meds that are not available in the area. Know the country's pharmacy dispensary laws and respect them. If at all possible, use a local pharmacist.
* Patients who get medication from medical missions frequently share medication, sometimes resulting in unintended consequences.

I read this book on my iPad, and this had advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include being able to quickly look at links that hyperlinked; I loved that. There are a remarkable number of great resources. The disadvantage is that I found myself forgetting abbreviations and having to go back and look them up. My only complaint with the book is that there were too many acronyms. The acronyms times can be confusing.

The bottom line: This is an excellent and thoughtful book. If you are going on a medical mission, read this book before you go. And be sure to write down the acronyms as you encounter them.

Absolute must-read for any doctor doing short-term missions, secular or otherwise

I got hooked in the first chapter, when the author recited a one-page story of an infant that died of a Tylenol overdose a week after the team went home. The portion of this book on patient safety is alone worth far more than the price of the book. I've led medical mission teams, and been vaguely uncomfortable with a lot of the loose strings we left hanging. How I wish I'd had this book first. And there is a lot more of value, particularly the parts about relationships with local providers. I'm buying a bunch of these books and giving them out to all my internationally minded colleagues.

A Nessasary Read for Medical Mission Work

This is one of the best books I have read to prepare for any short term medical missions. I downloaded to kindle which actually had a great advantage. The book is thoroughly referenced and all the references can be hyperlinked to the original references. I plan to continue to study the references and the book prior to making any future short term medical missions. I give this resource my highest recommendations. It should be reqiuired reading for anyone planning on short tee missions!

Fine content; poor Kindle formatting

The content of these cards is very good. The formatting of the Kindle edition is terrible. It needs to be formatted so that you're looking sequentially at the "front" of one card and then the "back" of the next card on the next Kindle page/screen. As it's formatted now, there's no separation between flashcards, so the "back" of the previous card often shows up on the same screen view as the "front" of the next card. This is very confusing for studying. The Lange Histology flash cards are formatted perfectly; these dermatology flash cards should be formatted exactly the same.

THIS OLD MAN, HE'S A PLAYER

Junichiro Tanizaki is one of the most brillant Japanese writers of the last century. While best known for his family drama The Makioka Sisters, a lot of his books have to do with subjects more at home to Henry Miller. Tanizaki is a master of illustrating sexual obsession in novels that would be erotic if they weren't so haunted and disturbed.
The Diary of an Mad Old Man is kept by 77-year-old Utsugi as he is recovering from an earlier stroke which left him impotent with countless ailments that the elderly experience. Impossibly, he does find a way to have a sex life. His daughter, Satsuko, just happens to be young and beautiful, and Utsugi begins to lust for her more and more. He even tries to live out his fantasy by allowing Satsuko to rendezvous with her lover in his house, concealing the affair from his own son. By allowing Utsugi certain liberties with her body, Satsuko begins to replace his own family. For example, his daughter asks for a loan so that she can buy a house and Utsugi refuses her. He turns around and buys Satsuko a ring worth millions of yen. What follows is a slow dance, almost a tango of give and take in which neither Utsugi or Satsuko is the villain of the piece. They seem to actually GAIN by the immoral situation. They both get what they want.
Diary was a really good novel but it wasn't a great one compared with previous novels by Tanizaki that I have read. Sometimes the narrative dwells on boring details, but once it gets moving it picks up some power. To me, one of the hardest modes to write in is first person but the author really keeps the diary interesting. While I don't know if I would compare the characterization to that of Shakespeare, there is something of his comedy and tragedy in Tanizaki. Also seek out The Key and Quicksand.

Aside of his novels, I have Richard Brautigan to thank for introducing me to Junichiro Tanizaki (he dedicated "Sombrero Fallout" to Tanizaki).
"Diary of a Mad Old Man" was the first book by him I read (figuring that it was very short, less than a hundred pages, and concluding that - even if it was terrible - it would not take me all that long to read).
It tells the story of Utsugi (the mad old man of the title) and his relationship with his son's neglected wife, a former dancing girl called Satsuko. Now, on the surface at least, it appears that Satsuko, tired of the neglect imposed by Utsugi's son, decides to torment (perhaps torment is too strong a word - perhaps I mean tease - perhaps I mean something halfway between teasing and torment) Utsugi, inviting him into her shower, letting him kiss her bare foot.
The thing is. That title. "Diary of a Mad Old Man." We are reading the old man's diary and the old man is mad. Or at least, that is what the title would have us presume. And yet, the old man (our narrator after all) does not SEEM mad. Yes, okay, he is consumed by lust, at times, for Satsuko (but what old man wouldn't be?), but madness? The title leads me to doubt what I read. I wonder at times if we are inhabiting the dream world of a certain old man. (It would certainly account for why Satsuko is hot and cold and hot and cold.)
Still. There is a cool sensuality to the writing and it is without doubt a good introduction to an old master.

An entertaining comedy about sex and old age

Diary of a Mad Old Man is one of the best of Tanizaki's later works. It takes up where earlier Tanizaki novels such as Naomi and Whirlpool left off. Like them, it is a book about absurd sexual obsessions, and like them it is subtle and intelligent and lacks the heavy-breathing solemnity of much modern literary porn. In the Diary, the narrator is an aging man who is apparently impotent yet who nurses a wildly extravagant set of sexual fantasies. His fantasies end up making a mess of his life--as the characters' fantasies always do in Tanizaki's books--and they give us a vision of geriatric sexuality that is almost unique in literature. As usual, Tanizaki is at his most insightful when he is also at his funniest, and the novel is full of the usual Tanizaki complexities that become both more interesting and more amusing the longer you think about them. Tanizaki called himself a feminist (though he is the least polemical of novelists), and his work remains by far the best examination of the way that male sexual obsessions wreck the lives of the men and women who become involved in them.

About the Author
Derek Palacio was born in Evanston, IL, in 1982 but grew up in Greenland, NH. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Ohio State University. His work has appeared in Puerto del Sol and The Kenyon Review, and his story "Sugarcane" was selected for inclusion in The O. Henry Prize Stories 2013. He is the co-director, with Claire Vaye Watkins, of the Mojave School, a non-profit creative writing workshop for teenagers in rural Nevada. Currently, he lives and teaches in Lewisburg, PA, where he is completing a novel about a small Cuban family struggling to remain whole after fleeing the island as part of the 1980 Mariel Boatlift. He is also working on a collection of short stories relating to Cuba's past, present and future.

Incandescent writing

Derek Palacio. Watch that name. If the seeds planted in this novella grow, then he will be a major writer in no time. He has a mastery of pacing a story, not unlike peeling an onion: in shifting time and events and emotions and histories and actions and reactions in so few pages, he manages to present characters we know as well as seeing them in the mirror standing beside us - lights of joy and of pain and of physical as well as spiritual love exploding out of his pen like a 4th of July sparkler.
Another remarkable aspect of his story (and there are many such lights) is Palacio's ability to relate a gay love affair with such easy candor that he has created a gold standard for subtlety not embarrassed by passion that makes his entry into contemporary fiction unique and deeply admirable. He understands the Hispanic spirit and lingo and makes it work to embroider this little story with warmly human understanding.

Two brothers from Cuban heritage - the gregarious gay handsome Marcel has moved from Miami to New York to distance himself from parents who don't accept his sexuality, and the wounded ex-boxer Oscar who eventually joins Marcel in New York to open the gym the Marcel finances by means of his thriving street coffee stands in order to allow his brother to stay connected to the sport he loves but can no longer perform. The third pivotal character is young handsome Javier who has been supporting himself on the streets as a hustler. Marcel falls in love with Javier and to give Javier a sense of self respect and self sufficiency has engaged Oscar to train him as a boxer. Oscar coaches Javier as a corner man and prepares him for his first fight, but days before the match Marcel and one of his vendors are murdered by an ex-lover of Marcel. How this event alters both Oscar and Javier as the planned first fight begins suggests the intense power of love's bond, between brothers and the lover/fighter that Javier has become.

The fact that Derek Palacio has created this complex situation in so few pages, all the while relying on the non-linear style of writing he has so successfully mastered, signals the presence of a gifted artist. The outline offered here is actually on the bare bones of the story, a tale that offers intense backgrounds of each of the characters as well as the parents left behind and the additive brief events that fully shape the intensity of the story. The concept of the story could easily be placed within the confines of a boxing ring, were the thought processes of the opposing corners and their support systems made into words. it was like a really engrossing short film that left me touched ...

Here is one of the few novellas that I own and read. This novella is a lot shorter than Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human. I should probably reread and review that book because I keep talking it about every time I mention a novella. So anyway, here's one of those novellas. I probably might reread this because it was so short that it flew by, it was like a really engrossing short film that left me touched and confused at the same because it was like a short dream, a dream that went by in a flash. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the book, I loved it, but I'm not used to reading such a short book, so when I finished it I was like "Wait? That was it? I kind of want more." So this review probably won't be too long, because there isn't really much to talk about without revealing the whole plot.

How to Shake the Other Man is a book about lost love, death, and boxing. When I read the blurbs and synopsis for this book, I was excited to read it, because for some odd reason I love novels that talk about the limits of mortality, the shortness of life, but I was thrown off by the boxing. I was never interested in boxing but this novel is written in such a beautiful way that boxing became more like this powerful ritual that was being performed in this novel, like some sort of violent, extreme, meditative dance. Feeling pain to be enlightened and feel life? Or maybe I'm just a wacko?.

For a book that is so short, the characters are very real and very emotional. You can empathize with Oscar and Javi and smile and love Marcel. You can smell the coffee and feel the pain. Derek's writing is poetic and sweet, but not overdoing it. It's simple but at the same time it's lyrical like a love song about coffee and stuff. How to Shake the Other Man is a song about the loss of a brother and a lover, and coffee beans. And that's all I can say, I think. I loved it. I will read it again if I want to read something short or to watch a short movie on paper.

Lovely novella

I'm not just into novels. I love short stories, for their complex conciseness. And I love novellas because they best ones are not too long, not too short. They just tell their story and leave it, no bloating. And the internet is great for novellas - an ebook novella is perfect for a lunch break. I've been curious about Nouvella Books for awhile, and when they offered review copies of HOW TO SHAKE THE OTHER MAN, I jumped at the offer. (I enjoyed the excerpt in Electric Literature's Recommended Reading.)

And this is a great time for ya'll to give them a try too. HOW TO SHAKE THE OTHER MAN is .99 in ecopy from Amazon and 25% off direct from the publisher, which includes the paperback. Look, $11 is a touch high for 63 pages. But Nouvella does make the package as sexy as possible. The cover has that velvety matte finish I love, and it's wee size is just perfect for tossing in a purse. Novellas may be perfect for ereading, but print will never die when the package can be this touchable.

Marcel is a coffee vending entrepreneur who came to New York from Cuba to live openly and happily as a gay man. His brother, Oscar, followed. When Marcel is murdered, Oscar is stuck with Javier, Marcel's lover. Oscar was teaching him to fight, in order to give him a reason to stick around, and now his debut is about to come. But neither Oscar nor Javier is sure to go on with their partnership.

I loved how deeply drawn the characters and their relationships were. They're often ambiguous, each character unable to know any of the others' thoughts and feelings. I felt the plot wasn't as strong. Now, this is not a plot-driven story at all. It's about character and culture and connection, but there's still a plot. It's pretty thin, although I like that it moves back and forth in time to juxtapose the past and present. And, okay, I was a little let down by the predictable ending. (Is this how every boxing book must end?)

Derek Palacio's writing is wonderful - he's got a gripping, passionate style. He brings Marcel's boisterous, consuming presence to life in a way that illuminates his absence from the present story, how things drift apart without his magnetism. I'm interested in seeing what he'll write next. I'm not sure HOW TO SHAKE THE OTHER MAN was a home run, but it was more interesting than watching baseball.
