Gretchen M. Spreitzer is the Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration at the Ross School of Business, where she is codirector of the Center for Positive Organizations.

A gem of a book about leading

How to be a Positive Leader identifies strategies and actions that enable leaders to be successful. Unlike most books in the field, it is based on current, relevant research done by a very wide range of contributors. And it shows how leaders can actually use their findings. One of my favorites is a chapter on how leaders convert resisters into allies. People often resist because they doubt their ability to effect the change. In response positive leaders remind them of their past successes to energize them. It is a not a “rah-rah” pep talk, but a reassurance of their capabilities.

A fair collection of key findings

This is a cluster of findings, stories, and ideas by key scholars in the field of positive leadership. Written for the non-scholar, this book encapsulates much research into simple ideas that will spark the curiosity of leaders. The best part is the references section that will serve the reader to explore at depth the studies upon which these findings are shared. A serious attempt to substantiate the many flimsy ideas in the corporate world like “happy people are more productive people”. This is a reference book that provides insights from forefront researchers in the new field of positive leadership.

I devoured this book as part of my preparation for giving a 2 day workshop on positive leadership to 30 senior managers and managing directors at a large organisation. It is a key reference, with both a broad and deep look at the latest scientific research on what works in positive leadership. It summarises the current state of research across the whole field of positive organisational scholarship. The way the book is structured into different chapters by different eminent researchers on different themes makes it easy to pick out pieces that are especially relevant to a specific situation. Plus, each chapter effectively blends research and application, and all are structured in a similar way, with a very clear exposition of the topic, the background research and the actions that can be taken. Therefore it's easy to see what one can do, why it is likely to be effective, and what results could be expected. I found the book really challenged my thinking to clarify how to teach positive leadership effectively to senior business leaders, and I will be using it as a resource and recommending it to others (as I already have done) for a long time.
