Seeing through the System: The Invisible Class Struggle in America, by Gus Bagakis

Most people think of class as a ranking system-the more you have, the higher your class status. In contrast to this view, in this new study author Gus Bagakis demonstrates that class is a tool that explains how the capitalist system works and why the class struggle is invisible. Capitalism was and is a developing system in which the working class is turned into a commodity, selling its labor power to the capitalist class that owns the factories, businesses, and corporations. While capitalism claims to promote efficiency, wealth, and freedom, it is also a system where the rich are getting richer, the earth and climate are being destroyed, and the poor get more and more desperate with each passing day. All of this is happening because we live in a system that stunts personality and corrupts human relations by pitting people against one another for economic gain. Through class analysis, Bagakis explains that we must take off the filters that we've been indoctrinated with, so that we can see how personal, social, and international problems develop. Primary among these false filters is the idea that we are all middle class and so there are no class conflicts in our society. Seeing through the System seeks to help students, workers, social activists, and those interested in understanding the reasons behind many of the problems in the world today. You can come to understand how our society was put together, how it works, and how it can be transformed.

The Real Matrix--Burning All Illusions
By Ntropee
Americans pride themselves on the notion that we live in a nation dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal." Unfortunately, our pride in this noble aspiration often blinds us to the reality that America is more unequal than ever before. The Occupy/99% movement was a wake-up call that forced us to recognize the deep divide between "haves" and "have-nots"; rulers and ruled; the 1% and the rest of us. Using class analysis, Gus Bagakis helps us grapple with this grim reality and its meaning for our lives and our future.

SEEING THROUGH THE SYSTEM does exactly that--it encourages readers to reconsider their life experiences and their place in society by using the eye-opening, thought provoking tool of class analysis. According to the author, class analysis "gives us a way to understand how our society functions, how profit is made, why there are rich and poor, powerful and vulnerable, and why some are paid attention to while most are ignored."

Back in the days when lords and kings ruled over peasants and serfs, people were raised to recognize and accept their place in society. Class was a blatant fact of life. Today things are much less obvious. Society has been restructured to disguise this reality behind the grand illusion that "we're all middle class." While exposing this grand illusion for the weapon of mass deception it is, Bagakis demonstrates how class analysis can arm those who use it with ability to understand the real matrix of power and profit that hides behind this illusion to keep us polluted, poor and powerless.

Using class analysis, Bagakis helps his readers examine the deeply ingrained assumptions we seldom question about the causes of poverty and wealth; the sources of status and power; and the workings of the "free enterprise" system. He arms his readers with the tools to unmask the mind games that conceal the cold dark heart of a social system designed to make one class wealthy and powerful at the expense of everyone else. In short, the author gives his readers a powerful tool--class analysis--to help them "see through the system."

A clear and very contemporary view of our society
By Dickmoore
"Seeing Through the System" offers a clear and very contemporary analysis of our society. The economic and social concepts presented in this book belong at the table with any serious discussion of our national situation and possible future. For many Americans, trying to understand how our country works is like trying to understand how their car's engine works using only the information they got from the glossy brochure in a new car showroom. This book can really help.
This book will also introduce people who are not familiar with such ideas to some of the general concepts that have been part of serious left wing discourse for a long time. Some of these concepts have, unfortunately, become more widely associated in the public mind with rhetoric than cogency. Fortunately, this book is nothing if not cogent. Written with a teacher's attention to clarity, it offers a lucid and hopeful discussion of many of our greatest national concerns. These include our economy's movement from an industrial base to one more based on finance, declining fossil fuels, and global warming. The author makes what is a crucial distinction for activists between helpful reforms and and systemic change, and even provides a personal touch (in the form of a questionnaire) to help the reader locate themselves precisely within America's often blurred class structure.
I learned some important things from this book. It lays out the economic and social mechanisms that underlie much of our society's problems. This information could and should lead to rational minds at all levels of our society moving directly toward modifying or removing these mechanisms. Unfortunately, rationality does not occupy near the role in human affairs that we like to think it does. As a result it falls to to people like me and, perhaps, you (and certainly to people like Gus Bagakis) to belong to and/or support social movements that, despite what are often painfully modest returns, continue to nudge history forward.
