Highly Commended at the BMA Book Awards 2013

Extreme Tissue Engineering is an engaging introduction to Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERM), allowing the reader to understand, discern and place into context the mass of scientific, multi-disciplinary data currently flooding the field. It is designed to provide interdisciplinary, ground-up explanations in a digestible, entertaining way, creating a text which is relevant to all students of TERM regardless of their route into the field.

Organised into three main sections: chapters 1 to 3 introduce and explain the general problems; chapters 4 to 6 identify and refine how the main factors interact to create the problems and opportunities we know all too well; chapters 7 to 9 argue us through the ways we can use leading-edge (extreme) concepts to build our advanced solutions.

Students and researchers in areas such as stem cell and developmental biology, tissue repair, implantology and surgical sciences, biomaterials sciences and nanobiomedicine, bioengineering, bio-processing and monitoring technologies - from undergraduate and masters to doctoral and post-doctoral research levels - will find Extreme Tissue Engineering a stimulating and inspiring text.

Written in a fluid, entertaining style, Extreme Tissue Engineering is introductory yet challenging, richly illustrated and truly interdisciplinary.

A future where 3D tissue models for non-animal testing in pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics could be a reality
By Sussman
The thrust of this weighty text was to put into writing a single disciplined approach, which integrated analysis of the current difficulties, perceptions and strategies at a basic level which is suitable for all disciplines. To try and accomplish this the author has, in writing Extreme Tissue Engineering, is to try and address these needs by taking an bold, sideways look, sprinkled here there with wit and wonder. The purpose of which is to keep even the specialist interested - but tested. In concert with this is the need at the same time to keep informing the non-specialist and have them engaged.

The volume builds a web of examples and eccentric, astounding parallels with the purpose of leading the reader progressively deeper under the `skin' of tissue engineering strategies. Secondly, this book uses its well-explained case logic to create some thrilling new ways of looking at where we are going and how we might get there. In essence an excellent text that delivers.

The following are just some themes/ideas that a reader to come away with:

1. The idea of analysing and then critically isolating what we want to produce (e.g. cell-rich versus matrix rich tissues; modest versus multifaceted; prosthetic devices versus a living grafts; a tissue versus a process; a beneficial implant versus a 3D model test tissue; a generic, average tissue template versus a tailored `best-fit')

2. The concept that directly constructing a tissue (with cells in place) is both conceivable and primarily different from indirectly growing one, via cell action (fabrication versus farming)

3. The notion that we are so much further away from best-use of our interdisciplinary abilities than we think we are. (This goes straight to the need for this sort of basic assimilating book and the need to comprehend cross-disciplinary pressures rather than stalking for magic fixes).

Easy to read and understand
By Xian
The book introduces the reader into the field of tissue engineering by covering general topics to more specialized examples. It offers the newcomers new concepts with nice real-life analogies and provides the experienced researches a new point of view. So, if you are looking for an entertaining tissue engineering book, its the best choice but if you want a topic specific technical tissue engineering book you may want to search somewhere else.
