Not her best work, by far

I loved KULTI, the work showed maturity and a steadfast character in the heroine that truly carried the story thru her difficult journey as a professional soccer player in a relationship with her lifelong hero, a faded soccer star struggling to find his new path. Read it!
This story is New Adult, but ends up being a rather juvenile pastiche of bathroom humor, physical smackdowns and romance that never quite gets off the ground. The heroine behaves like a 12 year old boy ... oh, wait, so do most of the males in the story.
The hero is sweet, handsome and unfortunately lacking in personality.
Facts are suddenly flung at us instead of being subtly foreshadowed and then introduced as logical outcomes of the characters and plot.
I'll definitely be back to read more of MZ's work. I hope it will be better than this.

This pains me.

MZ is one of my favorite authors. I've reread every book she's ever written. I one clicked this one as she has always been a sure thing for me. Her ability to build the plot and and character relationships that result in the slow burn are what I absolutely love.
This one was different. It felt stilted at times due to a sometimes choppy storyline. It lacked the smooth flow that I've become accustomed to in her books. The subtle build that I think she was aiming for was ultimately...boring. I didn't get the attraction between the H/h. They felt flat despite the humor that was poured in copious amounts. I was actually rooting for Gaby to end up with Mason for most of the book.
It wasn't all bad. I'm a twelve year old boy at heart, so I appreciated the potty humor and laughed out loud more than once. I loved the relationship between siblings and appreciated that aspect very much. But, it just wasn't enough for me.
P.S. I want my Oxford comma!!!!

Warmth and LOL humor abound...

Have read all of MZ's books and could not wait to get my hands on this one. Downloaded it a few minutes after it was published on Amazon and read it in one sitting. The thing is - MZ's writing is weirdly mesmerizing. She is not, technically, a great writer, but she has a certain je ne sais quoi quality to her writing that makes it very easy for the reader to visualize everything that she writes and really care about ALL the characters. The best thing about her writing is definitely her sense of humor - laughed out loud a few times during this read. You can tell that MZ loves her family, because it comes through in her writing. When she writes about family and friends, she writes with such warmth and humor, it makes you "know" the characters inside and out. My favorite MZ book is Under Locke (a 900-page opus) and, unfortunately, all other books are overshadowed by this one. Now, a little negativity (sorry!). Her books are becoming repetitive. Characters and scenes could easily be interchanged throughout her books (have a feeling all her female main characters are essentially her). Her "slow burn" is becoming gimmicky. In this book, it seemed like she had to really try to keep the sex out until the end - a bit nonsensical. Anyhoo, still give it 4 stars, because even a mediocre MZ book, is still better than most in this category. Thanks for a sleepless night, MZ.
