Good grounding for those without a scientific background
By Dr. G. Hinson
This book was recommended to my MBA class to help us plan and conduct our final research projects. Having a scientific PhD, I didn't expect to learn quite as much as I did. In fact, I expanded my repertoire of measurement techniques, particularly picking up some interesting new methods for objectively assessing subjective issues (which are relatively common in management research but anathema to many fact-based pure science academics). My colleagues on the course who actually read it raved about the book, even those from an arts or social science background, so the author's style is clearly accessible.

Seeing through the System: The Invisible Class Struggle in America, by Gus Bagakis

Most people think of class as a ranking system-the more you have, the higher your class status. In contrast to this view, in this new study author Gus Bagakis demonstrates that class is a tool that explains how the capitalist system works and why the class struggle is invisible. Capitalism was and is a developing system in which the working class is turned into a commodity, selling its labor power to the capitalist class that owns the factories, businesses, and corporations. While capitalism claims to promote efficiency, wealth, and freedom, it is also a system where the rich are getting richer, the earth and climate are being destroyed, and the poor get more and more desperate with each passing day. All of this is happening because we live in a system that stunts personality and corrupts human relations by pitting people against one another for economic gain. Through class analysis, Bagakis explains that we must take off the filters that we've been indoctrinated with, so that we can see how personal, social, and international problems develop. Primary among these false filters is the idea that we are all middle class and so there are no class conflicts in our society. Seeing through the System seeks to help students, workers, social activists, and those interested in understanding the reasons behind many of the problems in the world today. You can come to understand how our society was put together, how it works, and how it can be transformed.

The Real Matrix--Burning All Illusions
By Ntropee
Americans pride themselves on the notion that we live in a nation dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal." Unfortunately, our pride in this noble aspiration often blinds us to the reality that America is more unequal than ever before. The Occupy/99% movement was a wake-up call that forced us to recognize the deep divide between "haves" and "have-nots"; rulers and ruled; the 1% and the rest of us. Using class analysis, Gus Bagakis helps us grapple with this grim reality and its meaning for our lives and our future.

SEEING THROUGH THE SYSTEM does exactly that--it encourages readers to reconsider their life experiences and their place in society by using the eye-opening, thought provoking tool of class analysis. According to the author, class analysis "gives us a way to understand how our society functions, how profit is made, why there are rich and poor, powerful and vulnerable, and why some are paid attention to while most are ignored."

Back in the days when lords and kings ruled over peasants and serfs, people were raised to recognize and accept their place in society. Class was a blatant fact of life. Today things are much less obvious. Society has been restructured to disguise this reality behind the grand illusion that "we're all middle class." While exposing this grand illusion for the weapon of mass deception it is, Bagakis demonstrates how class analysis can arm those who use it with ability to understand the real matrix of power and profit that hides behind this illusion to keep us polluted, poor and powerless.

Using class analysis, Bagakis helps his readers examine the deeply ingrained assumptions we seldom question about the causes of poverty and wealth; the sources of status and power; and the workings of the "free enterprise" system. He arms his readers with the tools to unmask the mind games that conceal the cold dark heart of a social system designed to make one class wealthy and powerful at the expense of everyone else. In short, the author gives his readers a powerful tool--class analysis--to help them "see through the system."

A clear and very contemporary view of our society
By Dickmoore
"Seeing Through the System" offers a clear and very contemporary analysis of our society. The economic and social concepts presented in this book belong at the table with any serious discussion of our national situation and possible future. For many Americans, trying to understand how our country works is like trying to understand how their car's engine works using only the information they got from the glossy brochure in a new car showroom. This book can really help.
This book will also introduce people who are not familiar with such ideas to some of the general concepts that have been part of serious left wing discourse for a long time. Some of these concepts have, unfortunately, become more widely associated in the public mind with rhetoric than cogency. Fortunately, this book is nothing if not cogent. Written with a teacher's attention to clarity, it offers a lucid and hopeful discussion of many of our greatest national concerns. These include our economy's movement from an industrial base to one more based on finance, declining fossil fuels, and global warming. The author makes what is a crucial distinction for activists between helpful reforms and and systemic change, and even provides a personal touch (in the form of a questionnaire) to help the reader locate themselves precisely within America's often blurred class structure.
I learned some important things from this book. It lays out the economic and social mechanisms that underlie much of our society's problems. This information could and should lead to rational minds at all levels of our society moving directly toward modifying or removing these mechanisms. Unfortunately, rationality does not occupy near the role in human affairs that we like to think it does. As a result it falls to to people like me and, perhaps, you (and certainly to people like Gus Bagakis) to belong to and/or support social movements that, despite what are often painfully modest returns, continue to nudge history forward.

Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel (Contemporary American Literature), by Bob Batchelor

In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald produced his third novel, a slim work for which he had high expectations. Despite such hopes, the novel received mixed reviews and lackluster sales. Over the decades, however, the reputation of The Great Gatsby has grown and millions of copies have been sold. One of the bestselling novels of all time, it is also considered one of the most significant achievements in twentieth-century fiction. But what makes Gatsby great? Why do we still care about this book more than eighty-five years after it was published? And how does Gatsby help us make sense of our own lives and times?

In Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel, Bob Batchelor explores the birth, life, and enduring influence of The Great Gatsby—from the book’s publication in 1925 through today’s headlines filled with celebrity intrigue, corporate greed, and a roller-coaster economy. A cultural historian, Batchelor explains why and how the novel has become part of the fiber of the American ethos and an important tool in helping readers to better comprehend their lives and the broader world around them.

A “biography” of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, this book examines The Great Gatsby’s evolution from a nearly-forgotten 1920s time capsule to a revered cultural touchstone. Batchelor explores how this embodiment of the American Dream has become an iconic part of our national folklore, how the central themes and ideas emerging from the book—from the fulfillment of the American Dream to the role of wealth in society—resonate with contemporary readers who struggle with similar uncertainties today. By exploring the timeless elements of reinvention, romanticism, and relentless pursuit of the unattainable, Batchelor confirms the novel’s status as “The Great American Novel” and, more importantly, explains to students, scholars, and fans alike what makes Gatsby so great.

Review
"Poignant, penetrating, and persuasive! Bob Batchelor's keen reading of the cultural matrix underlying The Great Gatsby is must reading for anyone seriously interested in American literature in the 1920s. Gatsby is seminal reading for both the serious scholar and lay reader interested in America's richest literary period. The cultural insights and literary interpretations are overflowing in accessible prose."
-- Phillip Sipiora, Professor of English and Film Studies, University of South Florida, and Editor, The Mailer Review

Bob Batchelor's book is both a powerhouse cultural history of The Great Gatsby and an impassioned plea for the importance of literature and the humanities in the digital era. He takes readers on a lively tour of America's on-going fascination with the novel, shedding light on core American ideologies and how literary texts like Gatsby become touchstones that both shape and reflect those values over time.
-- Leigh H. Edwards, Florida State University, author of Johnny Cash and the Paradox of American Identity

Bob Batchelor -- cultural historian, literary critic, media expert -- provides multi-layered interpretations of the many Gatsbys -- of and within the novel, film adaptations, popular perception, and within Fitzgerald himself -- that demonstrate how the novel is both of and beyond its time, and why the book, and literature, must continue to matter. Batchelor's Gatsby is not merely American but America itself.
-- Jesse Kavadlo, Professor of English and Humanities Maryville University of St. Louis, author Don DeLillo: Balance at the Edge of Belief

Few are bold enough to use the term "great American novel" anymore. Fewer still are those who can make a compelling case for its application. . . .Batchelor claims this status for The Great Gatsby, and his arguments are captivating, readable, and convincing. His embrace of didactic purpose for literature is daring. . . .Putting the genie of postmodernism back in the bottle is impossible--even if one wanted to--but a return to appreciation of the worth of "deep" reading in the development of critical thinking skills would have salutary results in the general reading population as well as the critical realm. To that end, Batchelor asserts early on that Fitzgerald's "inherent ambiguity enables readers to use the novel as a barometer for measuring their own lives and the culture they inhabit." He demonstrates how Gatsby accomplishes this feat by carrying enough intellectual freight to defy categorization and to remain relevant to American society. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; general readers. (CHOICE)

Batchelor seeks to capitalize on the success of Baz Luhrmann's recent Gatsby film adaption with this exploration of the ways in which F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel The Great Gatsby has been employed in American culture. The book works best when it sticks to examining concrete uses of the book throughout the years. For example, it features a brief but intriguing discussion of how David Lynch included a passage from the novel in a late 1980s television ad for Calvin Klein. Batchelor does a good job of neatly summarizing the details surrounding the novel's composition and initial reception. (Library Journal)

Great Gatsby fans [should] check out author and Munroe Falls resident Bob Batchelor's Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel. Batchelor explores the novel's birth, life, and enduring influence, from the novel's appearance in the heady year of 1925 through today's headlines filled with celebrity intrigue, corporate greed, and a roller-coaster economy. Batchelor shows why and how Gatsby has become part of the fiber of the American ethos and an important tool in helping readers to better comprehend their lives and the broader world around them. (Tallmadge Express)

The Great Gatsby’s enduring legacy can be attributed, at least in part, to the shared experience Americans have with the book. However, the work’s staying power in the national consciousness is due to far more than mere exposure. Beyond being included on many high school syllabi and reading lists, Batchelor argues that its enduring popularity is also due to its accessibility to readers and its inherent ambiguity [that] enables readers to use the novel as a barometer for measuring their own lives and the culture they inhabit. These seemingly conflicting characteristics create the foundation for Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel as it sets out to chronicle not just the book’s reception through the decades but also its connections to some of its main concepts such as the meaning of the American dream. Most significantly, Batchelor seeks to explain and validate The Great Gatsby’s continued significance in many facets of American, and even international culture. . . .Gatsby achieves these aims while also balancing the sometimes incompatible demands of being enlightening for scholars and being approachable for a broad audience. . . .[I]t is obvious that Batchelor not only has great affection for his subject but also a wealth of knowledge of the text, its history, and its use over the years. The sense of warmth and the depth and breadth of knowledge regarding the novel and American culture provide Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel with its readability. . . . .Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel is an important and worthwhile resource for those well-versed in The Great Gatsby as well as for those who want to know more about the book and its impact on American culture. (The Journal of Popular Culture)

In what seems to be the first in the Contemporary American Literature series, Bob Batchelor, James Pedas Professor of Communication and executive director of the James Pedas Communication Center at Thiel College, author or editor of more than 20 books, founding editor of the Popular Culture Studies Journal, and editor of the Contemporary American Literature series, gives a narrative history of the critical and cultural fortunes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the novel The Great Gatsby from its publication in 1925 until 2013, when a new movie version starring Leonardo DiCaprio was released. The author includes extensive notes, a bibliography, and an index. . . .Batchelor covers the ground well, pointing up the similarities between the 1920s and the 2010s in America—the culture of fame, the gap between rich and poor, and the conspicuous consumption of the rich. . . .There have been numerous book-length studies about the novel, including those by Fitzgerald experts such as Matthew J. Bruccoli, but this is the most up-to-date source on its reputation and relevance for our times. This work . . . could be assigned to the reserve rooms or reserve shelves in high school or college libraries where The Great Gatsby is taught. (American Reference Books Annual)

Batchelor's Gatsby [is] impressively researched and smartly organized. (The F. Scott Fitzgerald Review)

One of the bestselling novels of all time, The Great Gatsby is also considered one of the most significant achievements in twentieth-century fiction. Shouldn't be this difficult
By Knesewa
Maybe I had my hopes too high -- just looking to teach this old dog some new tricks. While Emme clearly is well-versed on this subject, the descriptions of how to perform each of the various strokes are unclear and hard to visualize. Illustrations or drawings would have helped, greatly. As it was, after a few chapters, I got tired of trying to interpret his instructions and went back to the tried and true. Waiting for "Masturbation for Dummies."

A HANDsome Guidance Book
By Grady Harp
Guillaume Fabert introduces Mark Emme's book on self satisfaction, IN YOUR HANDS, with the words `Let repressed hypocrites turn away from this book in a huff: one hundred fifty pages devoted to the infamous vice that led a scandalized Yahweh to punish Onan! One hundred fifty pages that could very well fall into the hands of innocent youths! When will such books finally be forbidden--and where are the police when you need them? `

From this point Emme takes the reader through a course as follows: `This work is split into three chapters: --the first deals exclusively with the erection itself, --the second deals with various masturbation exercises, -- and the third finally leads, through various exercises and control tests of willpower, to ejaculation. The exercises in this book are intended for all men, whether young or old. For most, they will be a revelation. Splitting the book in three parts makes it easier for readers to confront the two biggest problems of male sexuality: erectile difficulties and premature ejaculation.'

So in the course of this book Mark Emme asks the reader to relax, step away form outside influences, and just spend `real time' with his writings. The manner in which he approaches his subject is sound, proven, and helpful - for many reasons. The information in this book is the type that few men will approach a professional to learn, and usually out of embarrassment will not discuss with friends. There is nothing the slightest bit `dark' or inappropriate about the guidance Emme offers. The book reads well and the results are - well, that is up to the individual with specific needs taking advantage of an open, informed writer on the subject. Grady Harp, January 13

Danny Gatton was a players' guitar player, hailed by both Rolling Stone and Guitar Player as the greatest unknown guitarist anywhere. His legend has only grown since his untimely suicide in 1994, along with appreciation for his blinding speed, effortless genre-hopping, flawless technique, and never-ending appetite for tinkering and problem-solving. Drawing from first-hand interviews with dozens of friends, family members and fellow musicians, Unfinished Business places Gatton's musical contributions into context, and documents his influence on those peers who admired him most, including Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Arlen Roth and Lou Reed. 290 pages, 6 inch. x 9 inch. I am glad I got to enjoy a couple of his albums, "Redneck Jazz", "88 Elmira St." and "Cruisin' Deuces" while this massively gifted man was alive, and like others who loved his music, shattered when he committed suicide on Oct. 4, 1994. Heibutzki writes a tender and somewhat sad biography of a man torn between his unbelievable musical skills that were second to absolutely no guitar player on the planet, in any style, and the desire to stay close to his D.C. area clubs and Maryland home, loathing the road trips and very uncomfortable around the music sharks, whom were so flabbergasted at his enormous range they were simply at a loss how to market him to a much wider audience, so after two albums with Elektra, following disappointing sales, went back to indie land with Mopar, to release the last album before his death, the astonishing "Relentless".
Yes, there were other very good and great players out there, but none had such a solid grasp and mastery of such a variety of styles from old rock and roll, blues, jazz, country and bluegrass influences. The real kicker was that he would deploy all these elements in the same solo and make it sound like the history of American music in 32 bars. Sadly, with rap and hip hop and grunge dominating the charts with posers who didn't even play an instrument or sing (rap, hip hop), or played loud sludgy depressing guitars and equally depressing singers. Solos were not "in" with the grunge crowd, at least most of the bands. So Gatton found himself in a void, and although the other guitar players of the day were duly blown away, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck refusing to jam with him when he showed up at each player's respective gigs, and session work, his name and appeal would remain confined to long time fans in the D.C./Maryland club scene and guitar fans.
The book follows Danny from the get go, and by the time he was in his early teens, he was outplaying bands meant to back him up and tearing it up on stage, with his own tunes and a plethora of great classics and standards. We get some insight into the rivalry between him and Roy Buchanan, both gigging the same clubs and turf although Gatton and Buchanan neither one tried to force the other into some sort of guitar duel. Buchanan, more steeped in blues was more willing to tour and enjoyed greater name recognition and sales. The two did meet occasionally for beers, and admired each other's playing. And like Gatton, Buchanan would be found dead in a jail cell in Virginia, supposedly hanging himself with a bed sheet although many fans believe he may have been murdered. Two masters of the Telecaster were effectively silenced.
We get tales of infighting, between Danny's family and friends, his wife and daughter and his mother, and still some hard feelings as the book closes. But Gatton wanted nothing else but to have enough money to make a living and work on his beloved cars and be the attentive husband and father, and probably suffered from severe depression but hid it away from others as he felt twisted and manipulated every which way. One point of criticism I levy toward Heibutzki is his near total omission of the fantastic jazz album he recorded for Blue Note Records, "New York Stories", where, along with a stellar jazz lineup, turned in a beautiful hard core jazz set that ranks as probably the most tasteful of all his albums. While his Telecaster is on the CD cover, he either used effects to tone down the normal twang that only the Telecaster makes or played other guitars for a warmer tone throughout. Gatton loved jazz, and that album was one I listened to constantly while engaged to my wife of now almost 23 years, and it holds a special place in my heart for me.
Otherwise, it's a fine book, accurate, and ultimately heartbreaking. Not only do we get the tragic story of Gatton, we learn that his buddy, studio ace Arlen Roth, another great player, was no stranger to horrible times, losing his mother and then his wife and daughter shortly thereafter in a fatal car wreck. Roth's daughter was only 14 and starting to be a formidable guitar player in her own right, playing a Gatton tribute concert very shortly before her own senseless death.
You won't feel good reading this, but you will appreciate the depth and guitar mastery that no living player maybe with the exception of Brian Setzer could touch. Time hopefully will bring him to a larger audience, but if not, his legend will live on through his amazing recordings.

Excellent biography!
By Martin A. Miller
Finally! The long awaited biography of Danny Gatton by Ralph
Heibutzki has arrived. The best biographies provide insight
into the character, motives, and personality of their subject.
Who was Danny Gatton? In answering this question, Heibutzki
has done an admirable job. Through many, many interviews from
all the people who were part of Danny Gatton's life; family and
friends, I know so much more about this brilliant musician
who Steve Vai (no slouch guitarist himself!) describes on the
cover jacket, "...Danny Gatton comes closer to anyone else to
being the best guitar player to ever live."
What drove Gatton to suicide? How did he view himself as a
musician? Why was he at once once blase about fame and at
the same time so driven to acquire it? At one point, he
forgot to call John Fogerty back to join his band, but was
clearly very excited to be signed to Elektra Records.
He craved the notoriety and money that came with stardom,
but would rather play small clubs close to home and
work on customizing vintage cars.
Why wasn't he more famous? Wasn't he arguably the best?
Maybe it was precisely because of his extraordinary skill
level. Can it be that he could only be appreciated by other
musicians or guitarists? Many people (non musicians) I play
his music for elicit a "ho hum" reaction, while my mind is
reeling with his stunning technique and musicianship. Who
knows? As someone who knew him observed, "he never threw
away a note".
Those issues, and more, are addressed in this biography,
and I feel after reading it that I know Danny Gatton, the
person, a bit more. Good job Ralph!

great book
By Jack Spratt
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about a great guitar player who left us too soon. Danny Gatton, with his uniquse style was one of the greats. I play a little myself and it makes me appreciate his skill all the more. I would also recommend buying his instructional DVDS. I didn't find out about him until he died, but since then I have purchased all his recordings. For all you learning guitar players, learn about Danny. His playing will surely inspire you.
